Animals don't themselves have rights, but HUMANS have responseabilities and one of those is a responsability not to (as defined by our laws) participate in animal cruelty. Naturally, slaughtering animals for meat is something omnivorous humans like ourselves must sadly do. Hoenig is correct in describing the current state of the law. Animals ARE considered property. He also says he doesn't advocate cruelty to animals. While animals are not inanimate objects, they are also not humans. As far as the LAW is concerned, lines must be drawn somewhere, and those lines intend to protect humans first.
