nice work to bad ppl post comments when they don't do that job everyday....my husband does and i they think they can do better wish they would try....or read the top ten what not to say to a hot horseshoer...
Is it a requirement in the bylaws of barefoot only morons that they must expose their ignorance on every youtube video that has to do with a horse's hoof. You people are annoying and naively endoctrinated by charlatans. Go back to your boarding barn and give your horse a treat out of your fanny pack and quit embarassing yourselves with your comments.
UM...so rasp off all the horn around the heel, then replace it with the filler material? This is not the answer for a horse with thin walls - conformable surface, right feeding, mineral balance and leave the hoof ALONE!
You can't FIX a hoof like this, you can only GROW it better. Oh - of course that takes time, and owners would rather spend on these unnecessary and intrusive trims than take the time..
Maybe the horse would have thicker and more dense hoof walls if you stop rasping it off and allow the hoof to have natural stimulation. Total illogique with an animal, better off working on cars with this type of approach.
What annoys me mostly about some barefooters(I am one!) is their lack of respect for other good hoof folk.Nothing wrong here with his power tool trims nothing wrong with some horses wearing shoes when they are shod regularily and have rest time out of shoes .Why all the agro ? Why the constant need to be RIGHT .There are many ways to take care of horses' feet....
I don't get it. You're not REBUILDING, you're giving him a pill. How can you actually make his hoof walls THICKER? You're just putting glue on. I'm sorry, but a horse that needs this kind of treatment is not a healthy bred horse.
This is fascinating. I had 2 TB's I used for endurance riding and neither one could hold a shoe - or even go barefoot over winter. Glad to see a talented farrier who can give a horse a hoof where it's been "selectively bred" out.
Seems like the horse doesn't mind this process at all...also, it's probably thankful for the support while out running on the track. If I was this horse I would be thankful! Great video by a great farrier!
that hoofwall is thin because someone RASPED IT OFF.....and the grow cycle has not replaced it yet with normal wall thickness.....this is very simple stop rasping the outer wall! all you natural hoof trimmers should see that the hoof is distorted and grown foward ......and the heels are ahead of the widest part of the frog.........
this horse has no outer hoofwall cause someone rasped it all off............get simple here...........now the owner is paying big buck for farrier work that was totally avoidable and unnesseary to BEGIN WITH...... this is how shoers deceived horse owners and make FAT CASH at their trade..............busted!!
Can some of you please get yourself some correct information about hoofs?
I think it`s stupid of you to argue about a subject that you clearly don`t know much about. Do yourself a faviour and get som knowledge before you speak..
BEWARE !!!! anyone thinking of attending the RED TOMLINSON school of horseshoeing, DON'T DO IT. RED IS A THIEF! He hides behind PO boxes, emails and cell phones so you can't track him down once you give a deposit. He will NEVER call you back with a time or place to meet for your first class.
Would love to know the make and model of the multi-tool you use. I got the best dremmel on the market but it doesn´t change the fact that the vents are right where you need to hold it!!!
Ian,I have been a farrier for many years, and have performed many of the procedures that I see in your videos here. Just wanted to say that you are helping a lot of horses go better. Some of the negative posts on here about your work, are from folks who clearly by their statements would use cheap and unproven methods (boots) to do a job like this. Who is really concerned about the horse in that situation? Keep up the good work. Videos are fantastic, i fear misunderstood by naysayers!
@sjfarrier Proper equine podiatry is virtually unknown in the United States. That is why you think boots are a cheap fix. If proper equine podiatry is not applied before the boot, it will fail. So your point is defeated. The farrier in the video is doing the complete opposite of what he claims to be doing. He is a bearer of false gifts.
At the end of the day, the horse is the judge. If it improved the situation, it is good, if it didn't work, why even bother putting it out there?. This approach does set up a positive cycle for the foot physiology. A Mustang roll is not on it's own a credible/realistic answer to this problem, it would be like saying, spraying my truck red will make it go faster.
Well these are not naturally occuring animals, sorry but leaving some horses barefoot will kill them. We created these problems and least people are paying the money to fix what they create, of course breeding out bad feet would be the best solution.
@canuckmel The clients of the people in the video are paying money to make the situation worse. As well as the the situation for all horses everywhere. Leaving a horse shod will kill. You are grossly misinformed about barefoot. and you blindly follow the bearer of false gifts.
Horses in none arid areas have different hoof issues.
I know a barefoot trimmer that wont take any sole off, her clients horses constantly abcess, she wont open up the abcess from the bottom and allows it to blow out the top. One horse has already been put down since she started trimming it, the horse didn't abcess previously. This is my problem with natural barefoot trimmers.
@canuckmel Abcesses are not caused by leaving sole on but rather by having too long a hoof. Proper trimming to prevent white line separation will prevent abcesses from occurring. I would not recommend taking sole off. It takes a horse longer to grow sole than to grow hoof wall.
OHMYGOD --That is unbelievable craftsmanship / you are like a plastic surgeon, thats one lucky horse to have you!!! Are you close to southern CA??? Would love to have you do my horse. smile!
Have you owned a horse with thin walls .. or low heels?Glue is not ideal.Mother Nature is the best route, but I definitely see value in this TEMPORARY product.I've got a mare very sore via hot nail, low heels, thin walls.I want to get her sound barefoot; No more shoes for her.But she may need help getting better/sound with help such as this product.I put her in this position & I've gotta get her out of it.
Hey, that was really neat! Is that a dremmel you are using there?? Wow, lot's easier AND better (control) it seems than knife and rasp.
My uncle was a farrier and told me about using fiberglass to repair large faults in hooves on the race track (Hialeah and Calder in Southern Florida)back before 1980. Great video, thanks
shapping the hoof and gluing this stuff on to make it look even better and stronger, and then nail a shoe to it? at one stage i thouht "why have you removed so much of the already thin quarters?" but then saw the hoof after the gluing and thought "its just like a hoof boot, why not just use boots and save yourself time and money?" and then i saw "ready for shoes!" and it made sence. actually, no sence at all.
He is a race horse that needs some type of traction. it's legal to race horses without shoes and many have tried without success or they all would do it. why pay for shoeing if it is not needed. All I can tell you is. he was lame without the glue and won races with it.
i guess you mean illigal to race without them, tho i now of many horses that do and also win races, even in the mud, and they keep traction better than shod horses. especially on sealed ad hard surfaces, even in snow. but if he is a race horse, he cant race in boots, and the owners probably cant afford to wait for him to adjust to barefoot, so fair enuf.
huh???? for what??? WTF?? Don't you think a good trim would build a better foot rather than mechanically try to repair a 'dis eased' foot. You fail to recognize the foot shape is incorrect here no matter what glue on method you try to put it will not bring back health. A good trim, good diet and suitable lifestyle will rebuild health. Give it a break and put down the power tools and take up learning to trim better.
So - wouldn't you think a good mustang roll would shorten the point of breakover? Take some stress off that toe and allow the hoof to move more efficiently?
Also - the back feet were not level. I could see light coming under the toes.
How does rasping all the tough tubule keratin off the outer hoof wall help to strengthen it and thicken it up?
To be honest - the power tool action made me ill. I understand needing a surface to glue - would never put glue on a hoof myself for any reason
Last year my vet used this same procedure to treat my fella who had very thin walls, the down side though he also had white line decease,we found that the white line infection loved the environment of the bonding causing it to spread further. Would I recommend it............ as long as who ever is completitng the task is highly qualified and knows what their the doing and how to evaluate correctly the reason for the thin walls as bonding can create greater problems down the track .
Hi, I would just put the wide web shoe on and grind it so it wouldn't step on it and let it grow. You have enough hoof wall for good nails. It gets expensive......it's ok when people want it. But I realy like your job. You are good. What did you accualy use for that. Thanks a lot.
I totaly understand. I do some former race horses myself and I tell you..... What did you use to rebuild the hoof walls. I have used the "superfast" and it doesn't stay too long. Thanks a lot.

Barefoot trimmers generally charge more than shoers. And they generally cripple horses.
spurrit 3 months ago
Stupid, and entirely unnecessary.
Correct diet, a conformable surface, adequate minerals and nutrients and it would sort itself.
Why are we always looking for a fix? You can't fix that, you need to grow it out with better quality horn.
