  • 1:28 that ball got the Chang treatment.

  • Maybe Michael Chang can beat Roddick with a wooden racquet right now.

  • @TheLuckytennis Yea...its just ridiculous how Roddick is playing better tennis here than in the last 5 years.

  • 2:02, chang at his prime would have got that return...

  • both are one hit wonder....at least so far...

  • @shawnspeed3.

    Your a dumb ass

  • Roddick's game has devolved into just a serve. He used to have a good forehand and a decent backhand but now it's just spin spin spin, average itf level groundstrokes and a horrible net game. It's no wonder he can't get past the 2nd round of any big tournament anymore.

  • @greeneggs1111 worse than itf groudstrokes actually.

  • @greeneggs1111 So true. His groundstrokes land in the middle of the court, with no pace at all. His ferocious forehand has dissapeared - the one that took him to win the us open.

  • roddick's backhand was better then loool~~~~

  • I just hate it when you wear black sock with white shoes and vise versa! So trashy looking. Match your sock with your shoes! Are you color blind?

  • @shawnspeed3 how old are you?

  • @shawnspeed3 wtf are u talking about u fag?

  • @shawnspeed3 wtf are u talking about u fag??!

  • @shawnspeed3 yeah, i know, cause wins and skill are REALLY based on who has the nicest stuff, RIGHT!?!?!?

  • I miss this Roddick. He was one of the most powerful players out there during this time. Not necessarily the smartest, but he was certainly very dangerous and watching him was just electrifying. Now, he plays too safe and too smart for his own good. He's nowhere near as aggressive and is so much more predictable. Even his serve has become average compared to the other top 10 players.

  • @Oanatinus Agreed. He used to hit penetrating forehands and play more like James Blake did but then somewhere along the line he began spinning it more and it lost its edge. His backhand, and volleys have always been a big weakness in his game.

  • @Mzee1084 During the period he began being coached by Dean Goldfine and his brother, he became very passive. He began to neglect the tactic of flattening out the forehand for some ridiculous reason. He's never been the same since.

  • Roddick will never play with the level of heart, passion, or intelligence as Chang, Agassi, Courier, and others of this generation. US tennis is dead. Then kids today play for only the paycheck and fame. Winning is not considered necessary as long as you have big sponsors. A sad commentary it is...

  • @shawnspeed3 So Roddick won the US Open without heart, passion or interlect? fucking moron

  • no tenia idea de que estos dos se habian enfrentadoo , dos generaciones muy distintasss

  • 3:21 Roddic turns hat around and goes to work lol

  • Nadal would rape chang LOL!

  • Man, if Chang stayed younger for longer then Roddick would be owned by Chang's

    ninja moves :D

Still Chang is one of the greatest players in Tennis

  • this was a classic..I remember as a 12 year trying to be like andy with the hat backwards and trying to mimic his crazy serving motion.! I remember skipping class just to see this..ughh too bad he had Lleyton against the ropes in the third round to only have his ankle sprained :( ...I hope he wins another slam!

  • @getoharmony23 Sorry to say but I really think he is done as a real contender for slams.

  • the guy at 3:46 is Tarik Benhabiles, the coach of Andy Roddick at the beginning of his carriere. He's french ans was a tennis player before, top ranked 50 in the 80's. He was a specialist of clay.

  • i think roddick has a great cock.

  • man...chang's brother messed his career up by making him play with a longer racket...oh well

  • @fleek164 Doesn't Roddick use a longer racket too? I use Roddick's Babolat GT, great stick!

  • roddick played better on clay than he does now

  • chang may have been old there but he won the french so it makes him a deadly opponent, good scalp from an 18 year old roddick.

  • Roddick was so lucky that Chang was old

  • wow andy started grunting towards the end of that match..i've never heard him do that before now and early in the match, it wasn't till the end he started doing that, guess he got desparate

  • this might be the only time u hear the french crowd cheering for Andy wow!

  • Roddick winning a match at the French Open? wtf?

  • hear the sound when the ball hits the board at 0:12 lol!

  • roddick had way more shoulder turn in his backhand when he was younger

  • nice serving andy:D

  • Hey I know M. Chang's wife!

  • Cool story bro.

  • roddick has some serious chicken legs going on there

  • @dmxwl2002

That's because Chang's legs were so ripped

  • haha

  • Roddick was actually sliding on some of those shots lol. And I thought he couldn't do that ha.

  • i bet he can kick ur ass just slicing

  • What? You need a friend? That kind of aggression was uncalled for.

  • this match must be one of the highlights in andy´s career, definitely..he looked like he was hurting physically at the end of that match, one of those hard fought/ sacrificing win´s..

  • andy's whole life has been defined by his hard work and determination to never give up!

  • absolutely, that´s what separates the true champions from the rest.

  • michael chang is a beast! I wish i had his stamina and speed. lol

  • Man, this video is amazing. Just look at the differences in their physiques! Who can remember when Roddick had bird legs! He looks like Michael Chang circa 1989! Roddick now looks more like Chang does in this video. It just shows you how these players get bigger, better, stronger as their careers move forward.

  • who's that guy at 3:46?

  • Tarik Benhabiles, Roddick's early career's coach and a former French tennis pro

  • that would be roddick's old coach, tarik benabiles

  • mark my words roddick will win very soon he is in best form and i can smell a grand slam win soon

  • Nah thats Roddick crapping his pants for the return of Nadal :D

    Very inventive my friend :D

  • thats a good one my friend lol

  • lol, i certainly smell something

  • chang what a man what a man what i mighty good man! loved chang through the 90's one of my favourite players before the blood guts and determination of hewitt we had michael chang!

  • Damn I wonder what Chang said to Roddick at the end of the match.

  • you bitch!

  • roddick looks like a little baby haha

    2 legends

    great match

  • I remember seeing this match, before that I didn't even know who Roddick was. I remember his emotional breakdown and even a bit of crying, and his blistering serve, of course :) Since then he's been one of my favourite players. Chang was amazing back in the days too.

  • hahahah..its funny how it actually went to 5 sets!! damn not to bad for a old guy. Chang is the shit!!! my idol!! cause im about his height too. hahaha..

  • Hahaha, even in 2001 Roddick is easily passed at the net

  • hahahaha

  • The funny thing is that this match, despite Chang having played for about 12 years on the tour, went into five sets.

Even though Chang was much slower than he was in 1989, this was still an insanely good match.

  • Man, Roddick had 39 aces in this match!! 39 aces on CLAY and against CHANG!! That's unbeleivable!

  • yea look how old Chang was!? hahaha..like 30? and roddick is was like 19? lol.

  • Man, I never knew this match took place, or maybe I just forgot about it. Talk about a match of generations............I know that Chang had to be around 30, and maybe Roddick being 19 or 20? It is a testament to how great a player is when they play into the next generation, or even two generations. Agassi and Chang played against McEnroe, Connors, Lendl and then on to Becker, Wilander, Edberg and then on to Rafter, Moya, Corretja. Agassi went on to play against the 4th gen. of Fed & Nadal.

  • @theatlantean1 Just goes to show you, guys like Lendl, Wilander, Edberg could really compete with today's guys. Roddick is a force today, but he had some difficulty strangling a worn out 30 year Chang.

  • @dura1mater roddick lost to gabashvili on clay, that's about his standards, chang is at least a former RG champ whereas roddick's never been 2nd week in Paris. But yes, Lendl/Wilander/Edberg could certainly compete in today's era if we brought back some of the faster courts but that doesn't look like happening at the moment, everything's slowing down.

  • ya u r right , what ever those idiots say...^__^

  • It is interesting to note that Roddick's serve has changed since the time in this video. In the video, he starts with a wider stance and brings his foot up when he is in motion. Now, he starts with his feet close together and doesn't move them until he jumps.

  • i think chang lost this match.

  • Roddick looks a bit lanky here like Querrey is now, despite the massive height difference of course

  • not a massive height difference actually. Roddick's 6'2 and Querrey's 6'6. not trying to bust your balls or anything, it's just not that big of a height difference

  • 4 inches is a lot.

  • Yeah. Especially in this sport.

  • andy had a much better forehand here than he does now...he needs to find this forehand again

  • he had to make a change...its great when he flattens it..im hoping with his new coach that he could do it a bit more......he decided to make the change from flat to more topspins because it allowed him to battle in the longer rallies...he does mix from time to time, but the change was to (supposed) to help against the better baseliners....big serve-then ts forehand....

  • his forehand right now is honestly kind of pathetic. it's just way too loopy. like nadal's but without as much spin OR pace. i hope stefanki gets him back to this forehand, too. if stefanki can dramatically improve Andy's return game (like he's said he wants to do), then Roddick could have a new lease on life and maybe be a much more dangerous player

  • I agree with all points you raised.

  • well thank you. i try.

  • Haha :D

  • a match on youtube in between agassi and roddick, he´s spinning his forehand like he does today, but for some reason his ball was very penetrating, even with top spin, back in 04 check it out, i don´t know if him changing from the old pure drive, to his signature pure drive may have influence on the speed of his shot´s..

  • oohh Andy was crying!! He was so cute!!

  • how so?

  • great drop shot at 1:56

  • hard fought match! andy lost to lleyton hewitt in the next round..

  • how come Chang dont look old here? lol?

  • is 29 old for you ?

  • hes only 29? thought hes 41...

  • Oops he is 36, I just knew he won the FO at 17 y o in 1989 but my calculation was wrong :-p.

Well 36 is not that old =)

  • double shit me =) in fact I was right, in 2001 he was 29 =) but now he is 36

  • he needs to start playing tennis again. I like hes style...

  • Are you kidding ? Michael is 36 now.

  • well supertrex2 said "Chang dont look old here" so "here" he was 29...

And I said further: "but now he is 36 "

  • Michael Chang is such a stud!

    always pulling off amazing shots~~

lol Roddick seemed to have a nicer attitude when he was young :)

  • I never thought that Andy would get a point off of Chang with a drop shot

  • roddick was just lucky that chang had gotten older, slower, and less aggressive even they had played in chang's younger years roddick would've lost

  • so what with the ``what if´´, give credit to andy, he won a match agains´t a much more experienced player than him at the time..especially on clay..

  • @jyy82993 chang was faster younger, but wasn't as technically sound

  • @jyy82993

    on clay maybe

  • hey, Roddick was 18 here

  • @jyy82993 thats what's i'm saying

  • look how skinny andy was back then.

  • say what you wan´t about andy, but he has a strong competitive drive in him..that hand chop in the air at 3:41..awesome!

  • roddick looks so emotional at the end...

  • I think he was pretty exhausted also..

  • wooooooooow the youngest roddick!!! he has no muscle if u compare it to the actual roddick

  • his leg´s are much thicker today..

  • I don't know that RG chair umpire used English in 01

  • i want to see some points of chang winning

  • OMG what a RARE vid!

    lovez it.

  • andy look´s like he is blown away at the end..

  • the fact that he had a french coach, probably must have helped a lot in the understanding of clay court tennis..use of drop shots and such..

  • Roddicks forehand was bigger back then then it is now.

  • More like "It was bigger back then THAN it is now" You used the word "then" as two different meanings, go figure.

  • Who cares, don't be a dork. How about you go outside more you geek.

  • I'm rarely inside actually, you illiterate bastard.

  • andy wishes he won french open at 17 like chang did.

  • Who doesn't?

  • Awesome!!!!! plz upload more videos when andy waas young. espically more of us open 2003 plese!!!

  • Thanks for putting this video up. It's a shame Andy doesn't believe that he can play well on clay anymore. You can see in this video that he used to have that belief.

  • He could actually move then...

  • omg he was so young here.

  • yeah, he was only 18! but always sexy!!1

  • of course! lol

  • True. He looks so lanky. I know he's still pretty tall now, but he has more meat on his bones now. Also, I like the flatter ball that Andy hit here than the spin he added to his game. His game was more unique when he was younger.

  • eaaasssy boys
