It's true that there are some fans who think this first dub is superior, but that doesn't make it true; I personally think it's pretty weak in comparison to the newer version and to many, many other dubs.
I love the older dub. Not to keen on the disney dub, but everyone has there own opinion. I only have the old version on tape though, but I've lost it, and the new version on dvd, but I hate the new voices. I would watch it in japanese, but Ive grew up with the old dub, and wish I could see it again :(
Sorry You're entitled to your view but I absolutely hated the voices from what I heard in this older dub and I think it's one of the worst dubs I've ever heard in a long time. Muska's dull, monotonous actor is better than Hamill? The obviously faked women's voices for Pazu and Sheeta sound better than Disney's leads? Give me a break. They all sound awful. Disney's version has a far better cast and less choppy writing.

It's fine. But for me Mark Hamill will ALWAYS be Muska; having a dull voice for a villain who's supposed to be double-crossing and mysterious works against the character. Plus I liked the supporting cast in Disney's version. However I do believe that even Miyazaki had a reason for justifying the change--even Carl Macek disliked this first dub of LAPUTA. It's fine that you have an opinion and I respect that. But I prefer Disney's version.

Yeah, this older dub didn't fare very well when it was screened briefly in America, and even Carl Macek, the distributor of the dub thought it was subpar (hence why he made a good dub for TOTORO).
That is definitely not the original music...Why did they change the beautiful music scores to this cartoony-sounding crap? It totally ruins the feeling of the movie...
I don't even think this "music" was even included in the old dub to begin with. I think somebody must've just laid it down just to show off.
But yeah, I definitely agree that Disney's dub of LAPUTA is better than this older dub. It may probably play better to people who never saw the Japanese version, but it's far from the inferior dub I've heard naysayers cast it off as. I'd certainly rather listen to it than this older cheapie dub any day.
That part was actually in the Japanese version, too. This is probably the only area where the older dub can claim any superiority--in that it doesn't have the sometimes extraneous additional lines. Otherwise, I'd rather hear Disney's dub than this.
Well, from what I remember, in the Disney dub, Pazu says, "Father?" during that moment, in the Jap dub and this one, he does not, probably because Miyazaki wanted the audience to come to their own conclusions. OK, so that part IS compromised a bit in the current dub, but not enough to spoil the movie (it's only one second). And personally, I think for every flaw in the new dub, there is also a positive.
Correction: I guess I meant to say "interpretative". IOW, people can determine what he was saying. I really don't know about this, keep in mind that all this is just speculation. But I honestly don't mind either version of this moment--silence in Japanese, music and chatter in English; the movie never fails to entertain me either way.

Where on Earth does the music come from in this clip? I'm sure Joe Hisaishi had nothing to do with it. Oh, and those voices! Muska especially--I was horrified when I heard that dull voice coming out of him. Mark Hamill was a far better Muska in my book; and while Disney's dub isn't without its faults, it's still lightyears ahead of this older dub.
Geez and I had my doubts about the English dub especially with Anna Paquin's dub but in terms of Mushka, Mark Hamill will ALWAYS be Mushka to me :-)

I love the older dub. Not to keen on the disney dub, but everyone has there own opinion. There are a few spots where their mouths move but there are no words. Like when Pazu sees his father in the whirlwind.
