Yeah, I don't know.. Usually the cool stuff is messy because there are so many people trying to patent the file formats and make money off them.. One of these days it will all be simple.. Another reason is that video is resource demanding, and the formats are very low-level to make things optimal for the software to read the files. Like mp3 audio files are cut up into "frames" of say 30 per second, each frame has its own header.. It's done like that to splice with mpeg video.
