Oh gawd I so remember Big John Gillis in the 1070 WirlyBird. I miss the rock'n'roll WIBC from the 70's-80's period. Funny but back in the 1980's, I too used to drive for Yellow Cab myself. I didn't like Dick Hunt. I love all these old radio clips from Indy radio. WIBC 1070 had the rock'n'roll, WNDE 1260 had the oldies and WIRE 1430 had the country. Of course WIFE 1310 was hot for years as well. Those days are forever gone but thanks for the memories.
Thanks for the great comment! My dad retired from Yellow Cab in 1979. I would listen to all those stations in the early/mid-80s when I was a teen (44 now), so I remember them well. I often wonder why they don't have the Whirleybird now, traffic is worse now than then. I need to get the rest of what I have digitized, but it takes so long!
@johnnytheC Sorry John, I didn't see that I had messages on my page. Not sure where the whirlybird is now but it belongs in the state museum. In the days long past, everyone had a helicopter or small fixed wing aircraft but due to insurance and cost of operating any aircraft today, most just parked them. As for those old airchecks, love hearing them. Our birthdays are only a few months difference but we had much the same exposures to life in Indy growing up. Fun to reminisce.
Thank you. I have more, most of which haven't yet been digitized, but these were the best bits. You know, your screen name reminds me of my dad, whom everyone thought was a chauffuer, although he really only worked for Yellow Cab (during the Dick Hunt reign).
