Amazing how Allah Ji's shoulders remain in the sam position through out. This shows no matter what speed, but thabla should be played whilst relaxed. Also, his expression shows he enjoys what he is playing. I would describe his expression as if he is newly born whilst playing. R.I.P

It's probably a tampura (tambura, tamboura, etc.). It's a drone instrument used to accompany Indian classical music.
