While neither character was as badass, they felt a lot more human than their predecessors IMO. Both deal with different Coming Of Age stories and finding their place in life.

Cheren didn't understand his drive for power, turns out he wanted power to protect what's important to him. Belle is caught between what she wants and others' expectations.

Even if they weren't be biggest threats or felt like the most intimate chars, I hope character development becomes standard for Pokémon rivals.

In the anime she looks closer to 13, which seems about right, but sheesh, in the games she has an impossible figure and endowment for a preteen. it is understandable if Cheren could beat you. Like most Pokemon in-game rivals, Cheren chooses the starter with the type advantage over the players starter. Getting beat by Bianca, on the other hand, is reason enough to have someone smack you over the head with a Gameboy Color. If you have difficulty beating Bianca, you're doing it wrong.
