Who the heck CARES about whether the Emerald Society regalia/pipes are politically correct or NOT~~~give it up already. Here in America, we are the blending of cultures. Get off the clans, berets, plaids, blah blah blah; just enjoy the music, for cryin' out loud!! I'm proud of the Emerald Society.
The bagpipes were only introduced to Ireland because of the thousands of Scots who immigrated to Ireland back in thr 1700's.
The bagpipes, tartan and clan system all belong to Scotland. It's quite sad to see how stupid you American's have become.
I have Irish friends who mock us off for wearing 'skirts' and playing bagpipes. If you go to Ireland, you won't see bagpipes at all. If you go to Scotland, you'll see/hear them everywhere!
@chadscotland you're correct. PW Joyce (Irish professor of history) wrote in his book 'On the Manners and Customs of the Ancient Irish' in 1873 about the existence of the Irish Kilt based on 1 picture from ancient manuscripts! This has now been shown to be flawed. So, effectively on the publication of this book the Irish academia of the time claimed ownership of the the kilt based on the age of the picture even though nobody in Ireland at this point had and cultural tie to it.
For those of us who are intelligent and are interested in the history of irish pipes you can google "doyle clan the great irish warpipe". It is very well written and accurate.
I would beg to differ. It was not exactly like the Scots system... but the history of Scotland & Ireland are very much intertwined. Hence why there are so many similarities.
Thank God you guys clarified everything! And thank God you don't listen to or play Rock and Roll over there because that would make you a "plastic yank" or "American wannabe" by your logic right? And I'm sure there are no blue jeans there for you to dress like Americans? Think about it dumbass!
Gotta say there lads, it's kinda looking a bit plastic from where I'm sitting! Why do American 'Irish' pipe bands adopt British military traditions? I admit it's all very pretty, but it isn't very 'Irish', Scottish pipes (3 drones), Glenngarys, Brit Army rhythms etc. Ok, Irish song..like it, but you call yourself "proud Police Officers of Irish ancestry who carry on the traditions of those who came before us." ?? Going out for a Guinness tonight? (Anglo-Norman family-London drink (Porter).
What's difficult to understand? Millions fled Ireland during the famine. Many entered the military (the fighting 69th for instance) and the NYPD in New York. They played pipes at funerals. Uilleann pipes are not suited for parades and most switched from the Irish warpipes (2 drones) to highland pipes for practicality. We wear uniforms that represent our various departments (notice the police shirts and shields) and sometimes we wear tunics.
We continue the tradition they started. We adopt what we like and discard what we no longer use. We play American, Irish, Scottish and sometimes other tunes. I've seen British military units wearing berets. Do they wish they were French or is it just what they have adopted? It's not too complicated to understand.
We always did speak English. Don't know what you are talking about but the French formally surrendered to Germany in June of 1940 and didn't contribute much until Britain and America began tossing the Germans around in North Africa much later. Google your history. I don't know what the French have to do with a bagpipe discussion because it's difficult to play them with both hands up in the air LOL
It no longer surprises or bemuses me to hear pious statements from Americans who think they won the war single handedly. When I watch any American film about the war I can see why, you'd think no one else turned up! Harvey Keitel capturing the Enigma machine, Matt Damon relieving the Normans from their occupation, and John Wayne...don't mention bloody John friggin Wayne! sorry, some bile entered my mouth, got to spit.
And for the angry/ignorant Scots who posted on here, we are not "plastic paddys". We are proud Police Officers of Irish ancestry who carry on the traditions of those who came before us. P.S. most of Europe would be speaking German right now if it wasn't for America.
The Irish in America formed the backbone of the NYPD in the mid to late 1800s and if you notice you always see bagpipes played at line of duty funerals for Police. The pipes in America were a symbol of freedom and Irish pride. They NYPD pipe band was founded in 1960. They were the first official Police Pipe band. The tradition continues today.
The Irish used pipes in battle before the Scots although both cultures were introduced to them by the Romans. The English declared the pipes and instrument of war and banned them until the highland regiments were reintroduced. The Scots kept up with the highland pipes but the Irish are more associated with Uillean pipes today (they sit down and play them with a bellows and they have a softer sound). You can watch a video you can buy on line called "Bagpipe: Instrument of war" for the history
In the video we are currently playing the Minstrel Boy into Wearing O' the Green (both Irish tunes). The Chicago band has a very special connection with the NYPD because the NYPD band flew out to do a funeral for them when two Chicago Officers were killed returning from a funeral. Bergen, Cleveland, Boston and Chicago have a very special relationship and play together at various events during the year.
Let me set the record straight. I was one of the pipers in the video. This was in Chicago following a tattoo that the Chicago PD Emerald Society hosted. They invited NYPD, the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County NJ, Boston, and Cleveland to be there for the 25th anniversary of their pipe band. We did ceremonies, the tattoo, and then a quick massed bands parade back to the hotel following the tattoo. A band from North Carolina played with us in the parade
Cleveland could not make it due to a funeral obligation and Boston did not come. There is at least one video from the tattoo on youtube -it's Bergen playing "Spancil Hill"
God this Plastic paddy Yank crap really makes my fucking blood boil. The only "irish" bit of this parade is the flag at the front and perhaps an oz of blood shared between them. Sceptics!

updremble you aint an expert where did the sotti come from originally they came from caledonia ancient scotland and moved back and forward from ireland and scotland beacause as the name suggests scotti means pirate we aint irish or are the irish scottish
Evening parade following the 25th Annivesary of the Pipes and Drums of the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Department (along with members of the Chicago Stockyard Kilty Band and the Wake and District Pipe Band of North Carolina.)
The Tattoo was held at the Chicago Symphony Center in September of 2007.
im no expert, but the 'scots' originally lived on the island of ireland, and then later took over the northern patch across the water, now known ass Scotland....so technically is was irish who in-fact introduced the ill-en pipes, which the scots later called 'bagpipes'...
Its actually me who is perplexed!!!! Why do people born and bred in Ireland. Proclaim to be British march down Irish streets carrying union jacks, playing sectarian British songs, swearing allegence to an empire that has long crumbled, and a crown that has long since abandoned them....
No one really knows where the pipes originated from - it's just accepted that the Scottish highlanders used them to their fullest extent and they became a 'national' instrument of Scotland - no surprise the English banned them as well as tartan (they were sh*t scared)!
I was watching this while the new of riots in tottenham showed up on tv... This would be one awesome way or supressing a riot, just put 50 bagpipes behind the police.

im no expert, but the 'scots' originally lived on the island of ireland, and then later took over the northern patch across the water, now known ass Scotland....so technically is was irish who in-fact introduced the ill-en pipes, which the scots later called 'bagpipes'...
