@Jakeakdreday Oh dear. Well as a result of King Charles I trying to rule on his own without Parliament consent, Oliver Cromwell and the Roundheads led a rebellion against Charles I and were successful and resulted in executing Charles I and exiling his son Charles II
@WR12MSH My bad. I guess I just made myself look like an idiot. But that still leaves the question of why is that their badge? Why not have their own motto on their badge? Please enlighten me if anyone knows, I'm very much interested in learning about this.
"Second to None", except one, they are the Second Regiment of Foot Guards, the Grenadiers being the First Regiment of Foot Guards and the First Regiment of the Guards Brigade and of the British Army. ron
u guys know tht realisticly csg are actualy no 1 gaurd but they were demoted coz they refused to fight at i think smurna in ireland but they were raised after the civil war between charles and cromwell anyway the grenadier gaurds were raised just before waterloo
Grand regiment the Lillywhites though the honour of being the oldest regiment in the British Army is accorded to the Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment).
The Grenadiers are the longest Established Regiment however the Coldstream Guards are the longest continuous serving regiment . to Clarify Established is the date the regiment was first formed. Continuous is the length of time the regiment has been in operation non stop without being suspended due to things like i dunno Civil wars budget cuts so on so forth
The Brit. Second World War navy film, "In Which we Serve," features this famous march, played by the Coldstream Guards, during the scene describing the relief of Dunkirk in 1940. Stirring.
@TheMarches09 Thank you. I'm looking for another Regimental March. It's also played every year at the Queens' Birthday Parade (not The British Grenadiers). It's hard to explain, because I don't know the name. Do you have more Reg. Marches here?
@henning0781 Is it Les Heugenot?(forgive spelling if wrong). Where the massed bands march off in slow time at the beginning of the parade and after the inspection of The Guards by Her Majesty.
@TheMarches09 Actually its called The Coldstream March- our high school band theme is the british grenadiers- we play all these songs- i happen to own a copy of the original print from the early 1920's
Formed by Cromwell as part of the New Model army, they don't wear the Crown on their buttons because they once fought against the King. (Charles Stuart ) but ever since General Monck took the regiment south in 1650 they are the longest serving regiment in the British Army. Magnificent regiment & music to match.
@field17 Ever heard of the Royal Scots? 1633-2006. So still 12 years before the Coldstreamers overtake them. Not that having once won a battle 300 years ago makes it's soldiers better today.
@BertrumPantyshield The difference is the Coldstreamers are the longest CONTINUOUS serving regiment. The regiment has undergone no structural change since 1645. Royal Scots were merged.
@BassDudeBear What about the Royal Monmouthshire Engineers (1539, continuous)? Or the Honourable Artillery Company (1087/1537, continuous)? Or the Royal Militia of the Island of Jersey (1337-1946, 1987-present)?
Coldstreamers have lost 2 battalions since WWII, I'd say that counts as structural change. Colours are in "suspended animation". You're not honestly claiming the regiment is the same now as it was in 1650, are you?
@BertrumPantyshield I Apologise, *infantry regiment. And I totally agree, the link is tenuous at best, but if the MoD claim it, I doubt they'd overlook their other regiment.
@field17 Hehe but they dont get the position on the right hehe for being the most senior regiment :P Grenadier Guards all the Way. Evil be to who he thinks.
@field17 Well the British Army was formed under the King, making The Life Guards the oldest serving regiment since 1651 and the Grenadier Guards the senior infantry regiment in 1656, as much as the Coldstream Guards were formed first they didn't become part of the British Army until after 1660 so they're not the longest serving.
Cromwell should have accepted the offer Kingship and then picked some total 'badass' to succeed him. The Stuart Kings were a big disappointment.

What's the name of this march, is it from an opera? It seems that the British likes operatic marches a lot.

Are you referring to the slow march played when the colours are trooped through the ranks?
Because that march is called, "Grenadiers Return".
