what do you do? Hoard, hoard, hoard? She's a Princess, dummy! She goes places and she does things on behalf of the country of which she is a symbol. You want her to look like a ragamuffin because she's beautiful and a winner and you're neither! "Thou shallt not covet" what other people have! Every heard of that? And it's in your own best interest. Resent the beauty other people have and the prosperity that comes to others and none of it will be yours or come to you.
@mc0558 You can't exactly expect citizens of that country who actually pay the taxes that support these people to be happy with their spending. Ordinary citizens are expected to tighten their belts and make due with less, yet see the nobility of their countries still enjoying the high life with no thought of where their next meal will come from! They don't think of these things because as long as the common folk work hard and pay taxes they'll have tons of disposable income. It's disgusting...
@viera1963 Mary's husband, Frederick, is paid €2 million pa; Denmark is a rich, egalitarian, generous social support , universal education through university and a national health system. Danes have great national pride, and the Queen is popular. Last time I saw her was at Aarhus tennis club. She was playing in one court; Prince Henrik in another. They were informally dressed. Their car, a 1952 US Buick. was parked in front (a Crown and 3 on the lp). They'd from over from the palace to play.
@mc0558 I actually have no problem with the rest of the Danish royal family! The Danish people like them and support them and love Prince Frederik. Princess Mary, on the other hand, is not like them. They seem quite humble while she comes across as haughty and cold. She acts more royal than the royals do!
Princess Alexandra was humble and sweet...so is Princess Marie-Princess Mary seems like she is miling this for all its worth. THAT is the problem I have and many others have-she's a snob.
@viera1963 Mary must find it difficult to adapt to all this, and her role is more center stage than Alexandra's. I just hope the marriage is going well. Give her a chance!
@mc0558 What exactly do these royals do? There's no such thing as 'royalty' anyway. Mary's an example of that. One minute she's an ordinary person & the next everyone's supposed to bow and curtsey to her? We put these people on a pedestal when they're ordinary people! They're parasites and charity cases and we're the ones contributing to charity!
Mary is frivilous and greedy-how many times has she gone over her allowance-TONS. It's not about coveting or envy-these people need to cut back, too.
@viera1963 Danish royals do the same as British royals do. I don't put anyone on a pedestal, but neither do I dislike them or have the impulse to full them down or something. To me they represent a form of government that works in my opinion often better than republics. They give many people pleasure and they are symbols of our history. During WWII they were people rally around when things wer tough.
@mc0558 I could care less about these people. I have no reason to envy them because I have money without any of the hassles of trying to appear to live a perfect life in the spotlight.
I understand the Danish system but the Gov't is looking at cutting child care benefits while Princess Mary can have 100 children if she wishes without a thought of how to care for them...the ones paying the taxes won't.
The whole idea of Royalty is stupid-people like you are brainwashed...it serves no purpose.
@viera1963 1- The Danish government isn't cutting child benefit; the UK is. There has been no crisis in Denmark. 2- One big advantage of monarchy over the republican system is that the King or Queen is the symbol of the nation--the focus of patriotism. Politicians run the government and if they're bad you can attack them without insulting the country, because the monarchy is the national sysbol, not the politicians running the government. Nobody believes that royals are better than anyone else.
@mc0558 Firstly, a Danish friend told me that the childcare benefit is to be capped at two kids...I know about the British changes-I'm British. I don't know where my friend got the information so I can't comment on that further.
Secondly, people DO think the royals are better! If not then why do we have protocol-we'd just treat them like everyone else! Why are we expected to bow or curtsey-we'd just treat them like everyone else! It's ridiclulous to say that we don't treat them any better!
@viera1963 Your Danish friend is mistaken. Denmark has a number of social programs in place to support children, including child allpwance. Denmark is a very social and egalitarian society. The rich are not that rich; the poor are not that poor. People are clustered in the center. As for the latter paragraph, I know many Danes. King Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid were much loved. Margareta is too. Henryk is not. Danes have a strong sense of nationhood and being few of its fragility.
@mc0558 If we didn't believe that they were better then this whole argument would be moot! Everyone the world over considers royals to be better than us 'commoners'-they're given wealth-everything-when they are just regular people who got lucky by being born into the right family.
It irritates me the way royals look down their noses at us when they are a bunch of welfare cases. The monarchies should all be abolished and those charity cases go out and work like the rest of us...
@viera1963 I know many enthusiastic supporters of the monarchy and no one of them supports them because they think they're better than the rest of humanity.
The Queen is the embodiment of the nation and she has devoted herself to the welfare of the country. But everyone knows that she and the rest of them are just people, and it doesn't matter. I am sure some of them do look down their noses, but that's them. As for abolishing monarchies altogether, that is a respectable position to hold.
@mc0558 Let me clarify-I'm not talking specifically of the Danish Royal Family when I express my views. The Danish & Swedish royal families seem like pretty nice people-I mean royal families as a whole. The British R.F. bother me. They're a bunch of stuck up snobs who look down on the rest of us while living off us-WE support them. It is accepted that they are better than us and they actually believe it. It may be unfair of me to lump the Danish R.F. in with them-the people do seem to love them.
@viera1963 I know what you mean. But Queen Elizabeth is old and stuck in the traditions with which she was raised. Charles tries but is riddled with insecurity. William and Harry are ordinary blokes. One of the problems is that they are all so worried about their reputations. They have a huge tradition to uphold; so they are always looking over their shoulders, which can be viewed as snobbery.
@astridbelge I agree with you-it's disgusting. People can't expect the citizens of Denmark like you to be happy about it! People work hard and pay taxes, and are told to cut back because of the economic times the world is in yet don't see Mary cutting back. She doesn't have to think about where her next meal will come from, or her next Prada bag as long as the citizens of Denmark support her. She needs to cut back like everyone else!!!
@viera1963 Look! She dresses up when she knows there will be photographers there. Otherwise she dresses like everyone else. When I saw Queen Margareta, she was in shorts and a T-shirt (no bra). Henryk was in shorts and a t-shirt, with his beer belly hanging out. I tell you that, not to humiliate them, but so that you will know that they are people. They don't pretend to be anything else. But when they have to dress up for their work, they dress up. So what?
@chufuss She is an Australian girl whom Prince Frederick met and fell in love with during the last Sydney Olympics. She was an ordinary looking girl. But with a year's "make over" and fine cloths, she now looks like she is supposed to look, the Crown Princess of Denmark and future Queen. What do you expect? That she will go about in public looking like a putzfrau?
