Check out Bruce performing this live at the Capital theater in Passaic NJ in 1978, it's an epic live performance..stunning, and evidence of his true ownership of this masterpiece. While you're there watch "Prove it All Night" at the same venue, great stuff.
mappelthorpe was not her boyfriend. They were very close friends byt Mappelthorpe was gay!
Anyway they were very close friends, and he became famous with his polaroid photos took everywhere and whit all of of his friends in their daily life. Patty smith too.

I think Patti is wonderfully talented and inspirational. Now I've only heard this song and listened to the album "Horses" and a few other songs such as "Pissing In A River" because I'm only 24 but, I thank Patti Smith for inspiring me to write poetry at 16.
This song stands the test of time. I can't believe how long its been since its release. Makes me feel old. I was a teenager when this was a hit.
Do you have the studion version of So you wanna be a rock and roll star. God she just kicks in that song. I can't find the cd anywhere. Isn't it on Wave? Does anyone know.
isnt patti grunge?so many others have done different songs in different styles but we didnt, well it's like good and bad,bad means good now and so on.but it's the same stuff with different lables.techno music,it has been done by emerson, lake and palmer for years.rick wakemake, journey to the center of the earth,it all had that crazy keyboard stuff but we didnt call it techno.
Patti Smith is my favorite performer, writer, singer, poet of ALL time. she is the best. thanks for this vid. i will save her albums until the end. i am lucky to have seen her live so many times in the seventies.
THANKS
heres to all Patti and all her amazing recordings, especially HORSES, RADIO ETHIOPIA, EASTER, AND WAVE
y'know, I love this song, one of my favourites, but at 0:25 she looks a tad like Amy winehouse, except patti slightly better, and also minus the effects of smoking on skin and sluttiness :p
I agree that it's not her best song. But Bruce would be the first to agree that Patti did a better job than he could. He'd sent the song to Patti whom first throwed it away and then picked up again and this is the result!
Hallo, are you shure, that "The Boss" has written this wonderful song? But my meaning is the same likeyours. Patty is the best person to intertain this song. I was long ago at a concert from her in Hamburg. During the concert she falls down from the stage, because she has drunken very much and took hard drugs. I was very disappointed about this concert.
I like Patti Smith but Springsteen did her a major favor tossing this off to her. As intense and compelling as she is, neither she nor her band at the time had the kind of ability Springsteen had to craft a song quite so commercially accessible and melodic. Her approach to music is original, fascinating and deeply satisfying but Springsteen is a PHENOMENAL writer who managed to strike that balance of artistic integrity and commercial viability.
As far as I know, Springsteen wrote the song, but he didn't want to put it on the album that he was recording at the same time as Patti Smith was recording hers, so he "gave" her the song and she changed the lyrics to get rid of Springsteen's typical working-man bullshit lyrics and make it more of a love song. Yeah, Bruce! We all know what a working man you were before you become a rock star! LOL
Just found your comment Also at the Old Record factory at the same time in 1978 was Lou Reed, recording that amazing urban mini-opera "Street Hassle", for which Springers read the epilogue - uncredited for the usual reasons. Until I read Reed's account I always thought it was a mischievous parody of The Boss's cheerful patter - 'tramps like us, we were born to fail'. Creative time.
Com'on the best part of the original is missing (just after the first chorus..). "What I've got is what I've earned...what I've not baby I have learned..."
I can't believe it had been cut in this version...
I'm not naming names, because I'm not into scapegoating people for their beliefs. However, extreme fag baiting will not be tolerated. Consider this fair warning to everyone.
I figure that Patti Smith's version of this Springsteen song is as unique as Elvis Presley's cover of Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes." Elvis breathes new life into it. Patti Smith does the same with "Because the Night." It's HER song now.
