THE ONLY VAN DOONICAN SONG I EVER LIKED. BUT IS IT FROM A MOVIE OF THE SAME TITLE??? IT DOES SOUND LIKE A WESTERN MOVIE THEME TUNE, DOES IT NOT? AND WHY, MAY I ASK, ARE THERE SO MANY VAL FANS OUT THERE? I THOUGHT THEY HAD DIED THIRTY YEARS AGO, HONEST.
I first found his song when I was 12 and have tried to stick to it's message since- 'So slow up, don't rush to grow up, you'll be a woman before long...', I'm 23 now and it's still poignant.
we played this at my beloved dads funeral, he used to sing it to us when we were little girls. he loved us unconditionally and i miss him so much..sleep softly dad until we are together again xxxx
Just saw him on TV show this week...he is 83 now and still a handsome man:) He sang a song "Paint Me a Song" I would love to hear it again, I have searched but cannot find it. Thank you for this one:)
At my wedding my dads speech was based on this song.He talked about the first time he saw me in a white dress at my christening and the next time at my first communion and the final time at my wedding.A fine speech from a fine man.
one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, so simple but touching. Took me a while to find out who sang it. go Val, what a testiment to life... Brings me to tears every time// Love ya x
Thanks for sharing this wonderful song and video with me. It´s like looking in my familypictures-album and let me make a sentimental journey back in time.... Greatly appreciated. My love and a kiss to you.
Also thanks to -conniff44- for uploading and sharing this wonderful video!
My dad used to sing this to me when I was a wee girl. When he died I bought the CD. Playing it makes me feel close to him. The words are so beautiful every new mum and dad should hear this song. Sleep tight, Dad. x
The lyrics of this song really gripped me as a young child! I often wondered if I'd missed out on my special years. Looking back on it all, indeed I hadn't!
yes, val doonican was probably better known for light hearted comedy songs, but this shows just how good a crooner he was , right up there with bing crosby or matt monroe
It was my daughters seventh birthday this weekend, the special years are going so fast, there`s already a big girl trying to get out of the little one,and I`m scared.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could stop the clock for a while. Your almost halfway to losing her and I agree it scarey, even more scarey than their first day at school.
What memories this song brings back. l can remember my mum bringing home this on a 45 record. She would play it and look me and cry. Now forty years on l understand why. Thanks for bringing back a little piece of my childhood and a wonderful memory of Mum.
Thank you so much for posting this. Listening to it brought the memories rushing back and tears to my eyes. Those words are so, so true ... 'slow up' 'don't rush to grow up'
Like the last writer, my dad died last year, and he sang this to me such a lot. As a mother of grown up children, I now understand the sentiment more fully. Thank You
I've just put the tissue box away, wonderful to hear this beautiful song again, my dad used to sing it to me,he died last year. Thanks for the memory.
this is one of my favourite songs from him...all the more emotional as I have a teenage daughter...which shows me how my mom and dad felt (about me) when this came out
I'm so glad it is being enjoyed. I don't know what kids are going to look back on in their later years and would hate to imagine what they will sing when they reach pensioner and go on the mystery tours. LOL :)
Talk about reflecting how I feel about my daughter, the song could almost have been written to reflect it. Raising her to become a beautiful, level-headed, and loving woman.... but still 'daddy's baby.' My son's not bad too. :-) :-] l.o.l. ;-}
The special years are indeed that, enjoy them while you can, the kids will grow up fast.

A very underated singer is Val, but the lyrics and his voice hold this track together as a lovely example of a song touching most of us.

Don't we all miss those years? Dad was right when he would say "don't wish your life away, it doesn't last very long".
We can see that now that we have gone through that 'special' time and wish we could go back again.
Childhood is such a wonderful period.
