He doesn't sing bad. I can see why he needed a gimmick(dressing like Apollo Creed) in order to be able to audition in front of Simon, Randy. Paula, and Jewel.

If he had dressed normal, singing the Italian song would have gotten him sent home after the first round of auditions. He never would have seen Simon and the other judges.
