Perhaps Mark and Ian are both of a talent and share the same underlying sentiment when it comes to music but create it in different forms. They are both outstanding musical talents with perhaps Ian Anderson being more prolific over the years.
I am very much of a Tull fan and have been since I was a kid but at the same time Mark is my favorite all time guitarist. My age? 49
Am I the only one who thinks this sounds a lot like Dire Straits? The vocals a little, but even the guitar and music kind of sound Dire Straitish. That isn't a bad thing though! Good song. Thanks for posting
Been a Tull fan since my first gig.....Thick as a Brick, back in 1972, and love this song.....as someone has already said, the instrumental at the end is fantastic, I love the drums in particular.........thanks for posting this.......
I know the musical stylings of JT have changed, as well they should. Personally, I love this song. The only album I still don't like is War Child. But I love Ian Anderson's voice and would even listen to him singing C & W honky-tonk twang. I also think that if someone doesn't like a song, then choose something else and post only what is positive. This song pays homage to a man and a time that has passed and I find it to be a really sad song.
I used to dislike the roots to branches album when it first came out, but have grown to like it as I have gotten older. Not all fans will like all albums, take a listen and see if you like it, that is what youtube fan videos are for. If it is not your cup of tea enjoy the albums you do like. Thanks for posting for those of us who like it.
I don't think this is dreadful at all. It's different, sure, but it's not bad at all. Actually I like to think of this album as an extended version of Crest of a Knave. The same style, this song being very similar to Budapest, for example. If you liked Crest of a Knave (which is an amazing tull album) you should like this.
i love this song i dunno what you mean at their worst?! the instrumental part towards the end is awesome.. not their best i suppose but there are hardly any bad jethro tull songs
its weird...i like this but idk if i would if i didnt know it was tull...i think my mind is being objective...i have this album too...roots too branches...i only listen to the title track and another song called rare and precious chain...maybe i should get more in depth with it
I think the main difference between Ian Anderson and Mark Knopfler is that Knopfler is a very competent guitarist and Ian is a musical genius :-)
Another difference is that Ian is someone who could sing having to come to terms with vocal problems later in life, whereas Knopfler never ever could sing (listen to Sultans of Swing) and, to be honest, didn't really try.
That's so Dire Straits at the beginning it's got to be deliberate. Has Ian Anderson made any comments about it? After that it gets properly Tullish so that's alright, heh.
It seems to be inspired/tribute to Dire Straits' song "Sultans of swing" which is BTW one of the few songs of Dire Straits which I am fascinated with.
Just listen to the song "Sultans of swing" or at least read the lyrics :-)
From '68 thru 70's I saw many the live rock acts, and JTull was by far the most original act going. Influences incl, blues jazz classical, folk, medieval folk, etc. Arrangements and stage act were amazing. Instrumentation incl a nice mix of elec and acoustic and such varied instruments as piccolos bongos accordians mandolins chimes etc. Original and compelling lyrics and all from the creative mind of Ian Anderson. To suggest he would need creative help from Knofler or anyone else is ludicrous.
I absolutely agree about this song sounding like the Dire Straits. Ian sings in Knopfler's talky manner and the music could easily have fit the style on Straits' album Love Over Gold. I don't know why that would be a bad thing though... It's still a good song, though unoriginal.
what the hell is wrong with people nowadays, the very idea that someone could think J Tull sucks confounds me. this is one of my favorite bands of all time, and there awesome!
I actually got into JT by the mistake of a friend. He was going to send me some Led Zeppelin albums and he sent me Roots To Branches instead. This was the first song I heard from JT. Needless to say I fell in love inmediately. Now Songs from the Wood and Thick as a Brick are my fav albums.
Yeah, I must agree on this, roots to branches is one of the albums I really don't like that much. Though I think Rock Island is way better. (The song itself, but yeah it's one of the weaker albums not comparable, with their real good ones.)
This song is amazing! I disagree with the ten year old who thinks thy sound like the Dire Straights, but I also disagree with Mr. Grand Dragon or wahtever his silly name is. You can make yor points without using hate speech like fag. We all have bad days, no excuse for that crap however. Suck it up and quit being a whiny little emo.
I agree. Tull is a timless band who should be enjoyed for all time. Any one who dose not like this band, dose not understand what good music is all about. Nuff said.
after hearing things like taab, songs from the wood, witches promise, aqualung... hearing this is kinda surprising, but good, nostalgic. nopt mentioning this was the first tull song I have ever heard
I am afraid you are wrong. This song represents the awful side of Jethro Tull. Poor lyrics combined with a dreadful voice and that awful Dire Straits feeling. I am right in this matter as I have the backing of The Jethro Tull Opinions Trust.
Hmmm... SeoDragon117, you are so right. Johnwolcot, you shouldn't talk as if every word you said was The Truth and the rest of the people were fools. Furthermore, it's not only the way of saying things, but also, I don't agree with you, at all.

there are a couple songs where ian sounds a bit mark knopfler-ish, this being one of them. but ian hits high notes differently. i love ian and mark!

Always loved this song and the album, have just noticed the strong D ire straits resemblance at times but still lots of classic tull so who cares!?

This is simply what Ian always has been, for pete's sake, a minstrel, a storyteller and one of the best at it!

Ian Anderson does a pretty good Mark Knopfler impersonation.
OK that sounds snotty, but it's why I like this song: it's as if Anderson is doing an affectionate parody of Dire Straits.
