I think they are qualified to teach. It's just that need to stop the spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment lessons. They need to plan carefully their examples and what they're going to say. Writing out a script in advance would help. To me, this is mostly confusing.
@TheMrDobbins They are playing Yamaha guitars in this video. Rod has a NTX900FM and Gab an NCX2000. They are pretty average players but certainly no good as teachers...they haven't got a clue what they are doing! It seems the only chord Gab knows the name of is E and Em.
@smoothflamenco how come we don't see you on Letterman and Glastobury then? (clearly you're much better by the sound of it) .....Do yourself a favour and go and be better somewhere else...in a quiet and dignified manner
@cmacmuiris That's pretty much exactly what I am doing thanks! Lady Ga Ga appears on the type of shows you mention, does it mean she's any good? Since when has fame been any kind of barometer for talent? I've seen the rubbish that gets exposure on Glastonbury, all image and attitude and little skill or melody! I would rather remain relatively unknown with ability and creativity and a fan base of real aficionados then swap places with most of what is offered today to hapless, clueless teenagers!
@smoothflamenco "That's pretty much exactly what i am doing thanks!" (Quiet and dignified - on youtube being critical of other artists) haha......clearly your guitar playing or whatever else you're doing in your life isn't enough to leave you feeling fullfilled. Why don't you just be happy with the abundance of talent you keep telling us about, and leave Rodrigo and Gabriela alone
@smoothflamenco "That's pretty much exactly what i am doing thanks!" @smoothflamenco "they haven't got a clue what they are doing! It seems the only chord Gab knows the name of is E and Em." ....and this my friend is precisely why they are such GREAT players. Words, names, classification systems and so forth are not necessary for music. To make an analogy you are like an art historian scoffing at an artist for not knowing the genre of art they paint. They don't care what you call it, they just like how it looks. Gab likes that sound. You call it what you like.
@seeweed420420 If the art historian doesn't know his subject matter or hasn't a clue how to achieve what his critique is aimed at then he would have little credibility, if on the other hand he does then he has earned the right to be respected for his opinion and to speak as one who is informed.
I personally am not a fan of R&G for many reasons but I have no problem with what they do or how they do it...my point is that they are not capable or qualified to teach - pure and simple!
@smoothflamenco Fair enough, i see your point. However, I question the entire concept of "teaching" art in general. What I'm saying is that it seems to me that when trying to teach something that involves creativity you often run the risk of limiting the student. To teach something in the didactic sense you have to break it down, classify and systematized it so as to communicate it with words.
@smoothflamenco ....To me, that system can limit you. Rarely do you find a great teacher of an art to also be a great artist, and I find that interesting. Don't you find it curious that so many great musicians across all genres often know very little music theory? Blues guitarist come to mind as do many of the big names from jazz. I guess to some up, I don't think anyone needs to be taught art. You can be inspired, but ultimately it is you that produces and expresses. That's the point right?
You have no idea what your talking about. They are one of the most passionate players out there. And they haven't sold out. Look up tamacun live and tell me you don't feel it. Obviously don't know what you're talking about. And the muting technique while keeping others open at that speed isn't something you learn after watching this once. Post a video response of you doing it if you can. If I don't see anything iwont be surprised.
Though they're better than those guitarists that can only play a few chords, their music really doesn't mean that much imo. I just don't feel it. Of course, they're also what I like to call quasi-virtuoso.. If you understand what they're doing and got a bit of technique, you can probably play along to this after having watched it once.
@TheMrDobbins Why would the watching of this video influence if you can do it? Playing at 140 bpm isn't any harder on a classical (or flamenco) guitar than on any other guitar imo, and playing plam muted is something you have to get used to, it's not neccesarily more difficult. Atleast, that's the way I experience it.

They are good musicians unfortunately not that good, Gabriela doesn't know the name of the chord and Rodrigo says that the scale he uses is a minor-arabic one....mmm
@1212625bear You don't have to be able to talk the music language to be a good musician - that is a ridiculous notion. You think that there were no "good" musicians before the creation of musical notation and naming?
@FretMonkey I'm not saying that they are not good musician but if you are a composer would be better to know what you do just to give a more logical reason at your composition
i dont get why these shows get artists to teach impossible songs, id rather see something more simple which i will actually be abe to play not impossible stuff, its like if they got petrucci and he tried to teach you how to jam, your brain would explode.
Hell if you are! I already got permission from her family. She didn't want me to because she wanted to run to a church with me, but I respect her family for giving birth to something that awesome!... so yeah BACK YOUR ASS AWAY!
Yeah, Savitri's solo mystery solved!

Do you need certain strings to do Gabriela's technique? And are both their guitars in standard E tuning?

@2003brendan Nylon will be a lot easier than steel strings and get you closer to the same tone.
