  • You look a bit like Neil from the inbetweeners

  • can u get 'noticed or famous' without HD?

  • @OxygenPwnage Absolutely. HD isn't important.

  • Good point about looking into the camera eye. I have a lot of videos where I'm sort of looking off to the side and it's really distracting during playback, like "what the hell is he looking at?"

  • I recently bought a Sony HVR-A1U so my production value increased dramatically...I'd still like to purchase either a lav mic or a handheld soon to generate better sound quality and avoid echo. Sometimes crappy quality can add to the humor of a video tho lol

  • hey, my video/audio is in sync like you said, but I don't know how to contact my computer techies. I use my built-in webcam on dell. I only have the not the slightest idea of how to add slides to my videos. Any responce would be very much apreciated

  • @MrSportsPicks Sounds like you need to edit your video and pictures in Windows Movie Maker?

  • @MrSportsPicks all u need is windows movie maker! Its completely free... I have 2.6 and its really easy to use!

  • What about the camera/webcam quality?? well i try to mix it up like you said :D, and i use my webcam and my camera sometimes, and like you said lights are on whereever possible!!! thanks hope it helps me a bit

  • Try to mix it up...... that was cool! :-)

  • Thanks for watching.

  • @Castaa i recently sent you a msg castaa, it would be awesome if you could reply !

  • I just lost my honors i had like 80 the best comedians so mad.

  • does the honors you gain if you video is very watched will remain? pls say yes.

  • Nope. They disappear.

  • more great information

  • his voice isnt synced lol

  • Ya some of the info in this video is old.

  • Sure, that's a good tool.

  • Any ideas for what to do with this copyright crud that's going on? I'm too scared to use music because it might get my account deleted.....

  • Only use music you have the rights to use is the best answer I can give. Otherwise you risk a video being taken down by a DMCA claim.

  • Thanks I'll just try to make my vids better so they're more fun to watch xD

  • I'm a guitarist. If I play along with certain songs will that be a problem?

  • Yes, if you don't have permission or the rights to use the commercial music in your video.

  • I must recommend this series to the Youtube 40k community. Great information here. Awesome. With regard to copyrighted material, there is a small margin for fair use especially in the not for profit uses... Again thanks

  • Thank you so much for pointing out about people who don't look at the camera!

    Chase

  • Haha that is so true, it's really awkward. I'm like dude! Why are you nervous! Lol

  • Have you got any tips for people that make cartoon videos like me?

    Thanks :)

  • I must know what's the song at the beginning of this video. It's the theme song for History Detectives on PBS and I have always wondered what the title was.

  • Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives - (1977)

    It's a great song.

  • Thanks ill have to get it.

  • Very good and informative video, Now for part 5! :)

  • My word! You managed to explain techno stuff to this total right-brainer so it could be understood. That alone is worth 5*s! :D

  • Any advice with lighting and glasses? I get glares on my lenses.

  • Good question.

Is the camera and light source near each other? Turn off your computer monitor before filming. Add more lights into your entire scene.

I would suggest putting your lighting that's illuminating your face higher and not directly in front of you if possible.

  • Very good, I learn lot from you, thanks.

Allow me to advise not to shot yourself with the day light in the back. I guess you already improved that point, cause made this last year.

    Very helpfull work, thanks!

  • Word of advice, don't say "umm" so much. It gets annoying after a while. Just some friendly constructive criticism.

  • Tips are great and right on. The quality of your video is very dingy though. Might want to look into some software for editing and color enhancement.

  • Good points, but the light behind you is annoying.

  • Mm this is very good! Thanks soooooooooooooooooooo much!

  • some of these tips dont apply to my vids...beacuse there online gaming vids.

  • lol...house?? i don't think so =\

  • wow you look like Dr.House in a good way!

  • Yeah doctor HOuse:P:P!

  • You look like House, but younger

  • You go die, bastard!

  • @Hundredalexander2 this is good stuff man, you shouldn't be downing it !

  • Crap, I never realized the size issue before. I always thought my videos looked a little strange once they were uploaded, but I never paid attention to why. Maybe I should watch my own videos from time to time instead of just everyone else's.

  • Interesting series, actually

  • Thank you for taking the time to share all this helpful information. I really appreciate it. I am new at this and not much of a techie. Your video series has been a great help.

  • Shit actually you really look like my 6 class primary school teacher. Thanks for the tips those links will serve me well.

  • You look absolutely glorious in the lighting! I mean GLORIOUS ... : )

  • Thank you so much for your very informative video... You are a natural born teacher. Would you happen to know why so many videos on youtube display very dark? Is there a way to control the lightness or darkness of a video as it runs on youtube? I thank you again for your very helpful video.

  • Great advice and a good video presentation to boot. One comment: I use Mac software for my videos (iMovie, which comes with the Mac, and FinalCut Pro). Both allow import from a camcorder that keeps the correct video aspect ratio for SD footage and will handle HD in letterbox very well.

  • Thanks a lot man. I feel your videos have really helped me. Now I know about the camcorders, lighting, and audio. Keep up the good work <b>OH YEAH!</b>

  • I'm loving this series , John.

  • Thanks MrsSmicks

  • ...i got 25 subs so far and 95% of my vids are out of sync :p so you CAN get subs that way, if you have good content to talk about, people will care about that more than about an off sync vid.

  • I'm sure you can. One can also do more voice over parts to imagines, raw video footage and text to hide the fact that the audio is out of sync.

  • A tip kind of ironic, but don't talk about the number of subscibers you have mention how you love them so much but a big taboo is <b>"Subscribe to my channel please"</b> just a phrase to be avoided by every youtuber its in bad taste.

  • ThortheWhore, Don't tell that to WHATTHEBUCK. LOL!!!!!

  • Your series has given me alot of confidence to start making videos. One thought though. I don't see how it would be breaking copyright laws as long as no one is profiting off of the use of the material. Otherwise you could be sued for having Korn playing in the background of your video, or playing your Snoop Dogg cd playing loud in your car. That just dosn't seem legal to crack down on that sorta thing. Anyway, keep up the good work, and I hope you will comment on my video when I post it.

  • I would certainly consult a more authoritative source than what I recommended since I'm <b>not</b> a copyright lawyer. I would recommend reading up on US "fair use" law for the particular use you have in mind.

However, remember that YouTube/Google is generating advertising revenue from the ads placed on every YouTube video page.

I look forward to seeing your first work.

  • Thank you for this video. Now I know why my camcorder footage looks so rough. Must. Remember. Deinterlacing.

  • i really liked the wallpaper behind your laptop^^

besides that: thanks for putting so much effort into helping other ppl here and showing them ways to improve their videos etc

made me subscribe and i'm curious about all your other videos.

    cheers!

  • It's a painting and thank you!

  • aww i'm sorry :) anyways it's really pretty. and: no problem.

btw i never had a response to a comment so fast ;) i always thought i'm the only one who answers video comments right away..!

  • That's a good tip! I've seen those used for photo shoots. They can be <b>hot</b> temperature wise.

  • Wow! Great video! You've definitely earned yourself another subscribed. I always wondered why when I captured my camcorder videos with imovie it automatically letterboxed them. I actually disabled this, but I'll be sure to turn that feature back on!

  • Quality has become important to me because I went from 16 subscribers to 550 in the period of a month. Do you know if there is any other settings i need to adjust when importing to my computer? Once again, great work!

  • Also import at the highest bit rate possible assuming you're importing your video for a camcorder. But also same goes with a webcam. Work with the high quality formats until you save out the video to upload to YouTube.

  • very insightful.

I don't really make video's but if i ever do, i'll bear these in mind

  • Thanks

  • This was cool, thanks :) (But, you DO know that most of your videos are too yellow/orange? I have issues with WB, too so I should STFU)

  • It's a setting for my webcam. Otherwise it makes me look very pasty in color.

  • This is your best video yet. Not just of the "Smart ways" series, but of all!!!!!!

  • Hey thanks points.

  • WOW, incredibly detailed and informative. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Havent done my 1st Vlog yet bcos my webcam is making a loud buzzing noise. any ideas on what the problem is or anything I can try to fix it? Thanks! 5 stars.

  • The webcam is physically buzzing or the audio it records has a buzz?

  • Wow, that's cool! I just did a quick test. Thanks for the tip! :) I'm using a Dig Cam in the Movie mode, so the sound's not the best; until I go to mic, this rules.

  • Very informative, Jon! Your resolution is good, but your cam gives you a kinda orangey glow. What's a good Sound Recorder? I'm trying to get my PC microphone setup so I can record voice-over's for my vids.

  • The orange glow of my video is achieved using the "outdoor" setting in my webcam's software.

I use my webcam to record my voice-overs. I then drag the video to the "audio/music" track in Movie Maker. Dragging the imported video to this section in Movie Maker will force it to only use the audio track of the video file. If you need something fancier, <b>Audacity</b> is a freeware audio recorder and editor.

  • I didn't know that you could do that. I've wanted to do voice over in some videos but didn't think I could with just a digital still camera and no microphone. I shall try this. Thanks, this series has been very informative!

  • You can assuming obviously the still camera has a microphone. My webcam will also simply record audio and no video as well given the correct settings. The SUPER transcoder I recommend will also convert video to an audio only file.
