RIP Davy, many happy memories of The Monkees...great fun. I still remember you singing "I wanna be free"....just like the warm September wind babe, say you'll always be my friend babe..sleep well Davy xxx
I saw the Monkeemobile first hand in a hangar at Sydney airport in 1967 ... my dad worked for the airlines back then and took me and my 2 other Monkee-adoring 13 year old girlfriends to see it ... we were like "whoa man ... " but that was as close as we got ... too young for rock concerts at the time :(
That is Davy, he´s the British one in the group; if you pay attention, there´s the accent sometimes when you hear their songs. Try a nice song by them called "Daydream Believer", lovely lovely!
They did show this intro in the first round of syndication (I saw it then), but after that they replaced it with the second intro because everybody knew them and they could play the who's Peter schtick without confusing people.
I don't recall seeing this intro after all these years, wonder why they excluded it from syndication, including the pilot intro ,which is song slower and has an altogether different style.
They always used the second season theme song in syndication for as long as I remember. They showed an episode back in the late 1980's though that used this first season intro in syndication. I wasn't even born when the Saturday morning reruns of The Monkees started in 1969 and was 4 years old when the show started in syndication in 1975 so basically the second season intro is the one that I remember most.
I first saw "The Monkees" on CBS on Saturday mornings around 1960-70 and never once saw the first-season intro, so thanks for verifying what I remembered.
Actually, Mike Nesmith was just as much a musician as Peter. He played guitar & steel guitar before the Monkees. The only two that starting playing professionally AFTER the Monkees started was David & Micky. But, don't worry, I know what I'm talking about. I'm not just making a statement to get attention (like others do). I'm just interested in stating fact.
RIP DAVY JONES

Why don't we see gimmicks like that these days...?
I wonder, for instance, what a "Westlife" mobile would look like...?
