No, you have to see the anime in CHRONOLOGICAL order to understand.

The girl fainting, Haruhi, likes "kyon" (the one saying "I love you" though, it was a game)

Whenever she gets very upset / jealaous etc, her subconscious creates a dimensional dark space with giant monsters destroying the earth. The other guy (koizumi) can feel when dark spaces are being generated and he has the mission of fighting them with his special powers before its too late.

Koizumi is really never happy with that. Every time Haruhi gets mad the world is in danger so they really have to keep her happy . Its more like they all at times suffer the burden.

The anime is really good it won some "best anime awards" ... you should give it a try if you have the time but remember - do it in chronological order.
