Watched this film it`s brilliant! Good cast, good actor`s and has a lot to say about Joseph Bonanno from his life in Sicily to becoming the Godfather of the Bonanno Family. Aslo shows Lucky luciano and Bonanno talking about the commision.
and recently the sicilians (zips) have been comming over to america to revitalize the families and restore the connections....the mafia is growing back into a powerhouse....they have corrupt politicians, shady cops, and connections with the russians and the colombians and other major world crime syndicates....they still have that "old money" as well as the new money
the mafia is something that will never die as long as there is a demand they will be the supply
Just watched this movie last night, and I couldn't get my ears or eyes from it!, Hearing them mention all those crime families and boss-names, gave me a mafia-boner haha!, No seriously, this movie was great, i absolutely loved it..great drama, great acting, great cast. It might not be as action-filled as i hoped for but the story was excellent..with all the things happening in it..executions of bosses, JFK, the Cuban Revolution etc etc.. ;) I highly recommend this movie
@asac54321 you mean the autobiographies? they are 'bound by honor' and 'man of honor.' one written by salvatore bonanno and the other by his father joseph bonanno.
Joe Bonanno lived out to be nearly 100 years old but his son Salvatore Bonanno only made it to his early 70s. Joe lived a good life I guess a healthy one unlike his son but than again his son had health problems to begin with since they moved to Arizona because of him.
COSA NOSTRA THIS THING OF OURS THE MAFIA IS A SECRET SOCIETY OF HONOUR BONNANO WAS A TRADITIONAL BOSS WHO BELIEVED IN THE WAYS OF THE HONOURED SOCIETY HE WAS A REAL CAPO
this is my family roots. joe was my grandfathers brother. ITS SOO WEIRD TO SEE MY LAST NAME IN A MOVIE! i have his photos all over my house. i miss all of the bonannos.
hey im sicilian,i like the godfather, and other shit like that..but lemme tell ya sumthin..they are show...not reality.i enjoy as entartainment, not as reference..why?cause i know that it's a life full of shit..getting arrested or killed, for money u can't even enjoy, backstabbed, and kill other people for futile motif..and believe me i see so much shit that you posers will go crying for days..
The Italians are done. It's sad to say it but after the organization was exposed to the media and shit it started to crumble. In order to be on top now adays you have to be a ruthless son of a bitch. Mexican drug cartels kill entire families, no morals, no rules. The Italian Mafia started out as an Honorable Society, it ended as something totally different. Lets face it everything has its beginning , middle, and end. Just like the Irish and Jews at one time.
I wouldn,t say that the mafia, in America or Italy, was ever more "honorable" than Mexican cartels or any other criminal organization or society for that matter. The mafia has always been ruthless and always willing to kill anyone in it,s way: Men, women, children, no matter. I agree with you that the Mexican drug war has shown just how brutal the cartels can be, but in principle the mafiosi and the cartel members are the same: criminals willing to do anything for profit. Besides it is a lot
Women?...children?...to La Cosa Nostra (for the most part), the HURTING of women or children is as bad as raping and/or murdering them, it is forbidden, much like homosexuality and cooperating with the government - all of which would likely result in the perpetrator being tortured, and then killed.
The Camorra are the only 'family' I've heard of who are so vicious as to wipe out families regardless of gender or age, but they aren't classed as part of THE Mafia.
I,m not sure whether you are talking about the american cosa nostra or the sicilian one, but the mafia in sicily has killed women and children and the american one has killed atleast women, whether it really matters has a criminal organization killed women and children or not. As for the Soprano,s "realism", I,ve seen the "real sopranos". It was Selwyn Raab who said Tony wouldn,t last long.
What I saw as realistic was how ordinary these guys were potrayed as and as for the part where they said The Sopranos made the mafia look more successful than they really were, ofcourse these guys aren,t rich. Like in any other legal bussiness organization, it,s the boss or bosses, who reap most of the benefits. And from what I hear, Vincent Palermo was very wealthy. The whole therapy thing was ofcourse perhaps the most unrealistic thing in the series, but I can forgive that.
more esier to act violently in Mexico than it is in US or even Italy. The society the criminals live also restrict them to a point. If the mafiosi were to live in Mexico, I,m sure they too would kill entire families if need be. besides The "morals" of criminal organizations are more about maintaining cohesion and loyalty of it,s members, rather tha protecting innocents or those outside the organization
@themadmick518 Maybe not so much in america but in the old country sicily and italy it is still going on and is still considered very powerful and honorable. These cartels Don't last very long either unless they are in their own countries like Mexico, Colombia and Bolivia.
I would not say they are 'done'. When there is money to be made and business to exploit there will always be Mafias running things on the underground. But I agree with you about the Mexicans, they do not care for any of these so called 'codes of the street'. The same applies to the Russians but not as much. It is only because the Italians and Irish in America are so far dow the line now they would be considered Americans where as these Mexicans and Russians are only just arriving
@themadmick518 it started with greed, corruption and murder and it will end with greed, corruption and murder. hollywood romanticizes the mafia, the reality is and has always been something much more dishonorable. there is nothing honorable about killing each other until there's no one left to kill, a bullet to the back of the head, bringing violence to your doorstep where your wife and kids sleep, etc. etc. etc. mexicans, italians, irish, jew, pink, purple, aquamarine..its just men killing men
But the mafia is still rich as a rockafeller, and powerful as a president...they still do run shit in new york state, new jersey, and penn state...as well as multiple metropolitian cities around the us like Chicago, Tampa, Cleveland, Cincinatti, Providence Ri. Colombus Ohio, ect.... and major Port cities like Miami, New Orleans, Pensicola, and out west... Reno, Vegas, Carson city Nv.....they still have the worldwide connections, and political connections, etc......
the sopranos had reasonable power, their family has about 50 - 100 members, but they not that efficient, from the late 40 to the 60s the entire cosa nostra put together, wou even nagociate (??) with the gouverment
@DrOrtmeyer the sopranos had more than that...you just have to remember that the show only showed members necissary to the plot...we dont see every soldier
Gangster movies such as these are so fucking lame. Phony too. That Gotti movie with Armand Assante; complete bullshit. The Best modern potrayel of American mafia is the Sopranos. By the way the Bonanno family wasn,t by far the only familu engaged in drug trafficking. All the famillies were in it. And the Bonannos were forced out of the commision because of the Donnie Brasco incident
Sopranos??an Italian NJ mafia outfit with that much power those days?series was a joke ,italian mafia in NY and NJ is pretty much a street corner operation. They can't fight cartels they can't fight russians(just to name few) But in Sopranos they are shown to be the kings ...BS.I agree witch you on Gotti wit Assante but This one was actually really good(apart from the Landau parts and the really young days in europe)
I don,t think they show Sopranos as kings in the Sopranos. It,s quate the opposite really. One of the themes of the Sopranos is the weakening of the American mafia. And I believe the shows potrayel was accurate. Also from what I understand is that the American mafia is still the most orqanized criminal syndicate in USA. Of course it has it,s rivals and there are new ethnic groups to challenge it(Russians, Albanians, Latinos...etc)
As for the cartels and street gangs, the mafia doesn,t need to compete with them because it,s not even in same kind of business. What you saw on sopranos was mostly white-collar crime. Cartels and street gangs are more involved in drug trafficking. Ofcourse there are some common crimes such as extortion . What i,m saying is that there might not even be a need for them to fight each other. Organized crime is not just about territory but also about business and markets
@ikosabre and thats what it is, a business...based on loyalty and respect. but if someone moves in on you, u lose respect, er go, territorial wars are necissary sometimes

Thats why Bonanno was forced to 'retire', and also one of the reasons why the Bonanno family were forced off the commission, second reason being drugs.
Even today they're the weakest family, and dont have a seat on the NY or National Commissions.
The original was five hours long and it was edited, or butchered really, down to 2 1/2 hours. They cut many great scenes. Now THAT was a greater crime than anything portrayed in the movie! No offense directed to you, but you haven't see the move yet.
this is the best film i own in my mafia movie collection, a real, true classic....both versions: the tv and movie are awsome... thanks for putting it on here!

that sounded nasty.
