Hey. Im a independent artist from Canada. Check out my new song I wrote called "Island" at this channel. My music is very much inspired by bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, and Radiohead. If you like it, leave a comment or subscribe.
First got into Dinosaur jr by buying You're Living All Over Me, then managed to find their debut album Dinosaur on Homestead Records. Finally, got the album Bug, then lost interest. They seemed to lose something after that album.
I remember the day - it was in 1989 - when a visited a good friend of mine, and he told me to take a seat and said: "Listen to that, I think you might like it" and started "Freak Scene". At that time, U2 and Prince were the only kind of contemporary music I could stand.
This new sound (again topped two years later by Nirvana´s "Nevermind")was a revelation to me.
fireHose, The Replacements, definitely The Pixies and those listed by GEOpz838, Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Smiths....all the way back to The Ramones and Sex Pistols
some kicks some butt video not so much pretty lame video. gotta love J Mascis and well hell the whole band is great such great indie rock and fuzzy guitar sound.
how the fuck was that lame? sounded pretty smart to me. i guess ur just one of the whordes of losers who sit around on there computers bitching about how good music used to be while contributing nothing musically themselves. YOU are fuckin lame dude!!
no dude it was fuckin lame. "a tin can will work". come on. it sounds like somethin out of a disney show. but for your information, i can play guitar, drums, harmonica, piano, and i'm pickin up sax. i have a band that plays several times a week. i constantly am writing my own music while introducing others to great music from the talented artists of various generations past by covering their songs. by the way, you need to calm down. no offense or anything. just relax, that's all.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
fucking stupid. my x-girlfriend from way back used to love these guys. i guess they are pretty creative, but their entire energy basically totals to a whopping "shirk". she never acknowledged my creative genius, and it always made me angry that she idolized losers and jerks just because they had some noteriety.
Dinosaur Jr. rocks. I don't know why people always say that Nirvana was influnced by the the Pixies, they always sounded more Dinosaur Jr. inspired to me. Nirvana had that raw yet catchy sound that Dinosaur Jr. has.
I would love to bring this kinda music back, Nirvana, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers circa Blood Sugar, Rage Against the Machine, Pixies, Sublime, Toadies, the first Third Eye Blind record, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam...man so much good music and i'm too young i missed it. Lalapalooza, Burning man, all that. I'm sick of the shit on the radio now. Even rap sucks right now. What happened to rap like A Tribe Called Quest, Snoops early stuff, Dre, KRS-One. I'd love to have music like that back.
i agree. i mean, 90's music was some of the best rap, some of the best alternative, just a lot of good stuff, and i wish a lot of music today was like dinosaur jr. and such. im not saying theres nothing good today, im just saying the late 80's-and 90's music was some of my favorite music, and nothing will ever be more impressive in my eyes.
Don't worry man! I'm sure all kinda music you mentionned will come back in the next years...People are just tired about this revival bands and this fake hip-hop (I mean crunk) with many crappy synth riffs! The new decade will be the good...I hope!
cant forget hyphy. thats even worse, because here in the bay area people try to emulate rockers and make fun of them at the same time. i really hate rap now. it used to be at least acceptable, because it used to also be about fighting the man, but now all of the god rappers joined corporate society and gave up. now raps in the shitter.
I know good stuff will come back around. I play music inspired by late 80's to mid 90's stuff, i would love to be the one to bring it back but I just don't know. The 30's had good jazz and blues, the late 50's and 60's was dizzyingly mindblowing in how far music advanced in such a short time period and how free the music was, and the 90's were awsome. Way i figure, it'll be 2026 before the underground starts playing good stuff and then the 2030's will have good music on the radio again. lol.
My name is Mascis I'm up to the task I drink out of a flask Dumb asses in slipnot wear masks when are you gonna be through I ask the man who refers to himself as the lonely Jew He replied back 'bout quater after two so I took my bag of balls stood tall and went home
Oh man, back when music was pure, poetic, raw, creative, etc. Late 80's early 90's alternative rock was simply amazing. This stuff was in the underground up until Nirvana broke it wide open in 1991. It was an amazing time back then.
Seen enough to eye you But Ive seen to much to try you Its always weirdness while you Dig it much too much to fry you The weirdness flows between us Anyone can tell to see us Freak scene just cant believe us Why cant it just be cool and leave us? Its so fucked I cant believe it If theres a way I wish wed see it How could it work just cant conceive it Oh what a mess its just to leave it
If you love it, then all is good, right? Then why the namecalling. Oh, i get it, you are a confused, immature adolescent. Get used to the age superiority thing, child. Oh, by the way, Dinosaur Jr was never "popular in the mainstream". i know, i lived through it. Loser.
this is what you get to enjoy from people who enjoy the music they make. Dinosaur Jr. continue to be a major inspiration to me in my own writing, just good music with an interesting edge. Awesome shit, no?
I pity the fools listening to Kaiser Chiefs and whatever shitpop is out there today, who are somehow under the misguided impression that they rock out. THIS is what it's all about, kids.
I also like what he said to a journalist from (from Melody Maker, I think) who asked him "What kind of music do you listen to?" Mascis replied, "Uh... everything." !
It is. Lou used a Rickenbacker bass almost exclusively until Dino Jr's equipment was stolen a few years back on the first reunion tour (I think...). He did while in Dinosaur Jr anyway.
Saw em in a little club in Birmingham last year and it was so loud it made my balls throb. What a fuckin band.
P.s reading a couple of earlier threads it makes you realise what an unbelievable time to be a kid. Pavement, dinosaur Jr, mudhoney, Sonic youth etc. Born in 71. Cheers dad. Check out the Reading line up in 93. reads Like your dream lineup.
