@catwoman185 Sometimes it is necessary to pull. Like with Red bag deliveries. You have to get the foal out quickly or it will die. And if the mother won't push you have to pull or else you'll lose both of them.
My favorite moment when horses give birth: when the mare turns around and nickers at her foal:) We didn't see my mare give birth, but she bled for days and days afterwards. Is it possible that maybe she had a red bag?
reading these comments wow ..makes it sound worst then human childbirth ..maybe its the size... whats a red bag ? and how the hell does a foot come out from the wrong end of a horse few comments back! ...i dont get it isnt that a seperate tunnel or does it rip through ? and why does or how does it happen ..just curious ..watched my 1st horse birth today jeez .
Bornlate at night huh? Or early morning. I LOVE your mare in foal stalls! (Or are they foaling stalls?) I have stalls like those too for my mares. He sure is a big guy. Probably going to be a nice big solid boned show horse isn't he? Mama sounds happy! And exhausted! My 7 year old mare Jinx, has a fillywho looks so much like your colt, except she was born tiny!
During normal foaling, mares have their foal and then, shortly after, the placenta. In the case of a red bag the placenta has separated from the uterine wall prematurely and the mare gives birth to the foal and placenta simultaneously. This means that the source of the foals oxygen has been cut (since the placenta has detached from mom, the transfer of oxygen to the foal has ceased) and they can suffocate. You need to get the foal out QUICKLY.
whats a red bag ? or regular ..i thought some one ment red bag as in that red thing at the rear ......i have a feeling your reply will embaress me so go easy ...;op
The red bag means that the foal isn't getting any oxygen, if you don't break the red bag and get the foal out within six minutes it will have severe brain damage or die.
I loved hearing the mare nickering at the woman filming. The foal is adorable. My mares foal got stuck and died.WHen she was delivering...the foals right foreleg when through the rectum causing him to get stuck. We didnt get there in time so he died.We had the vet come up to get him out.He was a brownish-golden color with 2 blue eyes,4 stockings, blaze and his mane and tail where a mixture of brown and white hair.He was healthy and a good size foal at birth. He wouldve made a geat horse.
So very sorry to hear that. :( We had a mare do the same a couple yrs ago, but fortunaltely we were there with her & able to move the foot. So sorry for your loss.
Thank you! I have some videos I took of the foals their 1st day out. Some videos they are a few weeks old. I am using a camera to video so they arent the greatest. Wish I had more time to catch em doing the funny things they do everyday! Enjoy!
premature separation of the placenta prior to or during a mare's foaling.normal chorioallantois is relatively thin and breaks easily during birthing. However some placentas are thickened from infection or inflammation, a condition called "placentitis," and can result in red bag deliveries. Exposure of late pregnant mares to fescue grass can also result in a thickened placenta at foaling.
You may not pool you idiot!!! you could hurt the mother!!!

ouch, that red bag looks bad.
Breyerlover01 2 years ago
It's the placenta before the bag basically. When a red bag is seen, you have 3 minutes to get the foal out, otherwise death could await.

I've never seen a red bag before. Is that cause for worry?
skybluepainter 3 years ago
Yes, you should be prepared to break the bag with a tongue depressor or something fairly sharp.
