  • Back to back. Yes, my friends.

  • I don't even think someone who isn't a bass can even say Barry Carl :) Crazy talented!

  • I was watching this and my mom walked into the room and like what she heard so she came over to watch it with me and she said, "Boy, that big guy with the low voice makes those others look like little boys!" I could only reply, "Barry Carl, mom, and yes he does."

  • my mother use to play the guitar and sing this to me when I was a little kid.

  • I sang this last year in choir!

  • I love his bass - absolutely fantastic! but I gotta admit I think Tennessee Ernie Ford does a better job on this song, but still love his voice!

  • This dude must have to bring his balls to work in a wheelbarrow...

  • This song was actually written by Merle Travis.

  • Gotta be one of the best bass singers ever!

  • Barry looks like the Grinch in some of those close-ups.

  • I wish my voice was as deep as his.

  • His voice is chewy...absolutely love it!

  • Barry Carl ftw

  • Half way through this song my sister took out her headphones, blasting Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber into her skull, then grinds out "Ugh... how can you listen to THAT?" *facepalm*

  • i swear i was at the gym and i saw him pass right in front of me...i live in rockland county. does he live in ny now???

  • @55Duran yes he does his daughter goes to clarkstown north with me

  • @55Duran yes he does his daughter goes to clarkstown north with me

  • @paulthegreat101 i attend clarkstown south right now

  • The most rock solid C2 I have EVER heard!

  • WinVoice is Win...

  • the bass already goes lower when he is talking than i can when i'm singing

  • I love a cappella, WOW, his throat is powerfull, Great singers.

  • that is quite a C#2

  • This man was elephant balls!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hella jealous. I wish I could get my voice half as deep.

  • Crazy good.

  • Possibly the greatest Bass I've ever heard.

  • Barry Carl is possibly my favourite bass ever.

  • his adam's apple is dancing on his throat

  • Hellboy can really sing!!

  • @irokcathgrls Ron Perlman played Hellboy asshole.

  • I melt whenever I hear that ultimatum.

  • Whoa!!!!!!

  • Brilliant, amusing version! Sung by us kids on the bush mine where I grew up in Tanzania. Our "theme", the words true in Geita. Some Muzungu men gave half their pay-packets to the club barman, the other half to the Indian shopkeeper, saying "tell me when it's finished." Real meaning to the words "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go!" My book's about that place, those crazy years. I'm going back first time in 44 years. I'll sing 16 Tons again, at the overgrown mineshaft mouth. And remember...

  • Interesting way to do it! I do it a bit differently. Cool rendition!

  • Barry Carl is my hero

  • No-one's saying the range of his voice, particularly the lower register is completely unique, especially for someone classically trained and professional. He is however, one of the best bass singers around and has been for a while, no-one can deny that.

  • Barry Carl has a such a great voice for a bass. its great to hear

  • oh yeah. sooooo good.

  • I can hit that last note no problem...

  • Has to be the greatest Bass voice I've ever heard.

  • Astounding performance!!!!!

  • I love him! I'm so sad he left the group :(

  • The bass that replaced him doesn't compare. =( Barry's off doing his own thing now so I happy for him. But it sure is a loss for Rockapella.

  • I love Barry's bass, and miss it. But I have to say I would have preferred a more traditional arrangement of this song.

  • what an impossibly cool voice

  • I hope can get a voice like this, as a freshman in high school i had a solid D 2 years later I had an Ab. You think I'm on my way?

Barry has been my singing idol since I discovered Rockapella.

  • Do you mean an Ab(1)? Cause if so, that's pretty impressive. How is your upper range coming along?

  • I'm not real sure on the whole Ab(1) thing. Relative to the bass staff, 3 lines below. My upper range hasn't improved much, mainly because I've really only just began trying to strech my range upwards. I've succeeded in not losing notes in my upper range as my voice drops though so I feel I'm doing fine. Upper range-wise: I can sing a D right off and given time to warm up a bit an E. How's that?

  • Yea. I would say you're on your way. XD

I am very jealous. My lowest is a D. Maybe a quiet C#.

The fact that anyone can sing as low as Barry can is amazing in my eyes.

  • I just now discovered them right here with this video.

  • Barry is my hero....i'm a baritone myself but i can hit pretty low as well.....i want to hit that last note but i know id never be able to hit it like Barry.

i also want to know what Barry's bottom note is even when he fries.

  • thats not baritone thats bass

  • i know, i was saying i was a baritone. really want to be a low bass but i cant hit low enough. :/

  • Is this voice for real?! :D

  • Big voice. Big biceps.

  • this guy was my idol when I was in college choir. I remember the day I showed up, going through vocal warmups to test my range.. never thought people were supposed to applaud when I finally bottomed out. *shrugs*

Needless to say, I was a freshman coming in to an established choir and ended being their deepest bass

  • apparently thats how he sounds when he talks!

  • gotta love barry carl! come back to rockapella!

  • nice pipes

  • that last note is INSANE! I sing bass/baritone in a barbershop quartet, (used to sing bass, but switched to bari when we couldn't find one), our present bassist wants to sing this....no way can he hit that!

  • their blend has not sounded the same since elliot and barry left...gosh they sounded SOOO good. i love elliot's voice. you can really hear it in this. and barry's voice is one of my favorite sounds.

  • pure basss

  • very cool version,I'll check out some of their other acts

  • i don't know if I like the way he slurs the words. regardless, they're all great singers.

  • Yeah, I can't decide. That's the timbre that makes him sound so rich and deep, but it also causes him to become nigh incomprehensible. - Pilum Viris

  • nice cover of the original thanks

  • ok i love barry carl but if you want to hear a deep bass voice search up "Elvira" by the Oakridge Boys. Watch it all the way to the end.

  • wtf -_-

  • the note he hits a 1:38 is epic

  • It's not that low, he just sings it in a really cool way!

  • HUGE balls

  • i'd like to see um...

  • To the coooompaaaanyyyy stooooooohhhn WOW!!!

  • it's company store

  • My f^@king god. That last note was unbelievable. Just wish the earlier portion had been clearer, perhaps better amplified.

  • Não tenho nem mais o que comentar...D+++++++++...AMUHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

  • I agree with LAJackson123! he/she is a friggin doush-bag

  • I remember listening to this song as a kid when Tennessee Ernie Ford did it and have loved it ever since. These guys do it some SERIOUS justice. and ya just gotta love Barry's voice!!

  • thats a true bass

  • More like 16 tons of bass.

    <333

  • @Kiyoshi617 16 tons of coolness!

  • what a deep voice... stunning

  • good times me and my brother sang to this

  • What's his full name?

  • barry carl

  • That camera person was a fuckin' douche bag. This is one of Barry's best showcases, and that turd fell alseep at the wheel.

    Die in a fire.

  • I love this song! Great job on bass!

  • Barry is awesome.....But check out "God's Building a Church" by Gold City. Tim Riely hits and holds some of the deepest notes ever......

  • to choosdad's comment:

    watch?v=87rbegDpHxk

    That's some crazy bass!

  • WOW that was great

  • I just absolutely love that last note!!

  • i like this one better then the original.. :D:D:D its freakin awesome

  • Damn.

  • I can't understand a single word he says...but I don't care he's freakin' amazing

  • Squishay is a moron. He needs to work on his power? This guy is one of the most famous basses of all time. Apparently you've never heard true skill.

  • yeah absolutely his voice is unreal

  • I do agree with you, Barry is amazing, but keep in mind that fame is not a measurement of skill.

  • you're kidding, right?

  • Your kidding right?

  • just because i like being like everyone else

    you're kidding right?

  • lol

  • u gotta love that insane voic off his

  • SO AWESOME!

  • Wow.. how amazing. That man's voice is a miracle, I swear!

  • Barry Carl is amazing.

Search "Acapella Roll Jordan" and you'll see the deep voice from Garry Evans.

    Good basses this guys.

  • that last note is AMAZING

  • God, I miss Barry Carl being in Rockapella. It's a shame he had to go, but I'm certain he had his reasons. At least he's not letting his talent go to waste; he teaches and things now, so more are learning to do what he does.

  • Sorry to have seen him leave the group. Damn! What a voice.

  • By all that is holy...this man is incredible.

  • The best! I love Rockapella!!!!!

  • The guy is an over all amazing voice talent. From his voice work to his singing the guy can do almost anything and make it sound cool.

  • Seriously. That last note. Rocks the hell outta any bass I've ever heard.

  • You should check out "Elvira" by the Oak Ridge Boys. Their bass hits B2; a whole step lower than Barry Karl's last low note in this song. It's crazy! =P

  • I can hit 2 B flats below middle C. And Im a GIRL!

  • Well that is indeed impressive!

  • to tell you the true, thats a bit scary.

  • what is barry saying at the beginning of the song after he says "i was born in a drivin rain"

  • "It was more of a drizzle."

  • holy shit, the bass singer has tha deepest voice ive ever heard, great!

  • Deep yes, but check out some Russian basso profondos.

  • the best song ever

  • is that the grinch?

  • Not the original Grinch, no. They did a recording of The Grinch with Barry on lead on one of their Christmas albums, though, which is great fun to listen to. (

  • well cus he sounds JUST like the grinch

  • Thurl Ravenscroft, if anyone was wondering. Also the voice of Tony The Tiger.

  • power to basses

  • This guy really made me appreciate basses a lot more. I used to think tenors were the best but now I see that basses are awesome. Especially a bass with a voice like this, his tone is darker then most basses I've heard. Definitely like this type over the more brighter sounding basses.

  • i think you ment richer then the most basses not darker

  • YOW! That's some wonderful vocals. Deep and soulful.

  • Absolutely amazing. That's probably the clearest, strongest C I've ever heard. I wish I could do that.

  • C# ain't it? :) Wish I had a way to record this myself...I am more of a Barry type bass than a George type bass. Always gotten a kick out of Barry...he's the man! Anyone need a bass? I'm offering. Can sing down to G/G# below this C. (C#???)

  • the key is c#

  • confirmed.

  • Pretty sure that's a low C, or a C2 on the piano. If you can hit that note you can define yourself as a bass. As soon as you can hit a low G, or a G1, then you're a god of bass. Oh baby.

I sing bass, and I can hit a B flat 2 on a good day. Yeesh its tough. George can hit it easy. Barry was good, but I like George's style more. It's more soulful, in my opinion.

  • Once again...C#. Bb ain't that big man...and really, for this group, it is hard to hear a "soulful" bass...Take 6 was for that...Rockapella, while still good will obviously never be the same without Barry, or Sean. They are a totally different group now...way less do-wop in their a capella.

  • I love the syncopation part.

  • This guy is truley amazing alot of the problems understanding him are caused by bad microphones and your speakers his voice goes lower then what the standard mic and speaker pic up and put out. but most of his singing is felt not heard which is sweet all on its own. George baldi had good range but this guy is a true double bass, i would kill for this voice...

  • I thought I was a decent bass, but this cat is the illest I've heard since Paul Robeson. "To the companyyyy STOOOOOOOORE!!!" Sick!!

  • I have to agree with the previous post. I love Barry, though.

  • I like this guy, except for when he has lyrics, lol..He has ennunciation problems...but he's a really good bass.

  • very goooooooooooood

  • I've seen these guys twice and met them. Barry is the best, dont get me wrong i like george baldi but barry is way better and he is fricken huge!!!!!

  • See I think george Baldi is better for the simple fact that he has a much wider vocal range then barry. Plus barry in my opinion has problems making his lyrics clear.

  • The main difference between barry and george is this. Barry is a TRUE bass. While george is not, george is more of a baritone. Trust me I had a choir teacher back in school try to tell me I was a baritone, ummm no. It was the next yr. new teacher that I found out I was really a bass 3

  • Barry is also more of a 'power' kind of bass, whereas George is more on the 'smooth' side of things. Both are terrific though and contribute in their own ways.

  • listen to their Zombie Jamboree concert video

it's the recording mainly, in person/better recordings his lyrics are very clear

  • Could've had more swing

  • someone told me that the base singer 4rm Boys2Men was the best, man u got that wrong....this guy is the best...

  • that's neat, i didn't know Jeff sang too.

  • Yeah, when I saw them perform back in 2k4, they did "Change in my life" without Microphones and all five sang, no percussion.

  • Barry Carl = Awesome

  • "...to the company stooooore!!!" Man - I can't get enough of this finish tone, it really KICKS ASS! :-)

  • Barry has a great voice for this song, his quality and tone production make him great for classical and this style of music. George is the better bass for the hip hop r&b jazz and more pop style of music. His tone and quality is much straighter and purer, more lyric. Both excellent basses.

  • I want to see this bass sing "Old Man RIver" from the musical "Showboat." He would be PERFECT for that song! I sang it for my school and lov ethe song, but having this deep of voice is the iceing on the cake ya'l!

  • While I am not doubting it about Barry, I don't know if I wanna hear what his High F sounds like.

  • Jasobres, did you hear Barry from like 1990?

    he didn't sound this good

  • I like Barry better than the bass that they currently have. Barry had a lot more vocal presence.

  • deepest voice I've ever heard... a bit like the Lion from The Wizard of Oz...

  • i use to be able to hit that last noet =P

  • reminds me of hellboy :)

  • reminds me of tony the tiger. Sexy voice!

  • He is now the voice of Tony the Tiger! Good for you!!!

  • Don't you mean "Theeey'rrre Grrrreat!"

  • What a great Bass...Low, yet resonant and very attentive to pitch sensitivity....Surely one of the best.

  • He decided it was time to do his own thing. From what I have heard he is loving retirement. He has some solo albums out.

  • Really, I would like to know that. I miss him =( He roxxorz
