Skinner is such fuckin redneck. He accomplished his biggest dream in life...to beat Jeff Gordon one time. After that he never won again. Now Jeff owns his sponsor.
@g0ing2n0where yeah I wish there was more ovals like this in NASCAR today. Flat tracks produce just as good of racing as high banked when configured correctly.
@CAT31in09 It was from when one of the Japanese drivers spun off turn two, and the guy's front-end hit Jeff's door. The Jap was done, but Gordon was runner-up
@SHJ1011 Yeah and now he would be fined and reprimanded for that burst of natural excitement. Ken Squier and Ned Jarrett didnt bat an eyelash, they knew what it was about. A great authentic moment that doesnt happen anymore in the sterilized NASCAR.
Fuji Speedway was originally planned as a 2.5 mile oval with 30° banking, but NASCAR ran out of cash to build it before construction was complete so it was sold to Mitsubishi and made into a road course. Toyota owns the track now, but if you look at satellite pictures you can still see the unfinished banking.
Yes, there are a lot of people down there that restore and modify domestic vehicles. There are also just as many people importing domestic vehicles to Japan as there are people importing RHD JDM vehicles.
They have talk about that several time, it's beetween 1996 in 1998.
They also race in 1997 at Suzuka a 100-lap races, the Suzuka Thunder Special 100, on the east section, under the rain, with a mix of Winston Cup and Winston West Series on track.
Also, in 1996, at Suzuka, Elmo Langley died of a heart attack in the Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car at the esses during an evaluation run.
I would love to see NASCAR race in Japan again. Especially Motegi because that has speed written all over it. It's Japan's only oval track. I think Honda could be in NASCAR within the next 3-5 years. If that happens, I'm sure there could be a date at Motegi and maybe Suzuka which are owned by Honda.
I would absolutely love for NASCAR to come back to Motegi. They've raced in Canada as well as Mexico so It would be great to see them return back, even if its just the busch series cars.
This race wasn't bad for an exhibition. I didn't watch it live though, TBS reaired it the next day. It was nice to have some racing in the dead of winter.
man they should try to get back to racing in japan and prob do some racing on fuji speedway instead of sazuka or try to work something out to race on sazuka. and just wondering if dori dori raced in this race if so what place did he finish? (dori dori, aka drift king = keiichi tsuchyia)
NASCAR had a good idea trying to get the sport more widely known back then. But it didn't work. NASCAR by itself has become popular without going "out of country" Broadcst in over 130 countries and in 33 languages.
Great race. Dale Jr and Dale Sr racing each other. I remember Dale Jr being interviewed on the Ben Stien show, he was asked, "How did your Dad react when you beat him?" and Dale Jr just said, "He threw a shoe at me"
It is an oval, also has a roadcourse "intertwined" with it, but they do not touch. Totally separate tracks. The front straight for the road course is behind the oval's pit road. So it's kinda like, track, pits, track, pits, infield... The actual name of the track(s) is Twin Ring Motegi.
The construction of the American Superspeedway section began in late 1996 and continues existing today. The Suzuka Circuit was banned for all forms of American motorsport
It looks like FUJI TV may have brodcasted the race because behind Larry Macreynolds, there is a sign that says FUJI TV so it made me wonder if they broadcasted the race.
yeah. this is rare video footage of this race. i am also lucky enough to have a copy of this race on video. this was a week after the final race of the season at atlanta.

And that's why NASCAR made it's one of the 1st to showcase this kind of racing on foreign soil. :D
