This where George Benson got this tune. I remember my father playing this album back in the early 70s. He would try to imitate Gabor's style in playing. And it was composed by Bobby Womack.
George Benson made this practicallyh his own.:) I heard this, appropirate, last, month, a few times on the Princess Cruise ship Golden Princess in the famous Princess theatre. I had forgotten , till today, what this was called, let alone the artist..!!
I used to watch Gabor thru the open french door at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, man he was the greatest most lyrical player ever, what tone what phrasing we last saw each other on the 405 freeway driving to gigs, RIP amigo
@SuperXavier30 well thanks for enjoying my anecdote, Gabor was driving next to us feeling no pain, grinning as we all honked and waved. Growng up in LA in the 60s-70s, hanging at The Lighthouse, Donte's, Shelley's and other joints was amazing. Everyone came thru town and played to our delight, all were approachable and as a student of Barney Kessel and Tommy Gumina (Polytone) I approached them all! Herbie, Wes, Benson, looking back it seems like those were better days.
Thanks for posting. I have the vinyl and used to play it all the time years back. Of course I love George Benson, but I prefer this version. Maybe it's 'cause Bobby Womack is on it too and Jim Keltner on the skins.
First time I heard this was when I was in jr. high school dreaming about the girl I had a crush on...I can remember the exact time and place...ahh, the magice of music.
I just happen to catch this song title while looking at an old issue of Billboard Magazine and reading the R&B top singles chart. I noticed it was in the lower regions of the chart and figured I would check it out. I'm sure most of you prefer the original, but I have no real preference here. I'm more familiar with the George Benson version, but I like 'em both equally.
First heard this in 1970 via a friend's LP - only partially remembered the surname SZABO - thanks to YouTube that isn't important. Always knew it was better than Benson. I'll pass it through to Facebook friends now. Very slick guitarist - I just read that Bobby Womak wrote Breezin'.

@australianseafari,..I’ve always been surprised of how little George Benson actually wrote over the years... Appreciate you spreading the music on Facebook, that’s hopefully a way of keeping these gems alive as we go on from one generation to another. Cheers!
Thank you. it really did. Like I said, my father would play this tune over and over to get the melody down. So yes, there are a lot of memeories connected to this song.
I'm glad and happy to share this with you. This song was a part of my personal life. My father was a guitarist and this was one of the tunes that he would play as he praticed playing. I'm glad you like it.
I first heard this tune in the early 70s. My father was a guitarist and would listen to anyone that he thought was good and played like them. Gabor was one of them that he imitated. When I hear this, I think of those days that he would play this tune on his guitar.
I have been into Gabor since the 60's and seen him live at the Troube.... Its great that he is not forgotten. Some musicians have the magic he danced with it and was creative enough to have his own style! Nice to see great players like Carlos Santana cite him as a influence on their own unique styles! As a surfer and musican some of my finest memeories are blended with the magic of the Gypsie Gabor! RIP mate... Gone but never forgotten!

@estuckeyjr,.I guess your referring to the one and only,. Mr George "Bad" Benson!
SuperXavier30 1 year ago
@estuckeyjr
George Benson recorded the most popular version, but I think Hank Crawford's take on it is much more soulful.

Very cool!
I'd never heard an earlier version than George Benson's, from 76 (?).
I now understand how Carlos was quoting this tune in a solo (on "Samba Pa Ti", IIRC) on the Lotus album, from show recorded in '73.

Gabor (RIP) owns this song forever, Bobby wrote it for him and played rhythm on it too.
It became the first or one of the first records to cross over successfully from jazz to pop hit charts. Long live Gabor Szabo!
