The southern part of ancient Bernicia (ie modern Norhumberland) wasn't even part of the Danelaw proper. The Danelaw proper stopped at the Tyne-Tees area. So one can argue about the genetic make up of the Danelaw but it is irrelevent to Scotland anyway :-) The parts of Scotland settled by Scandinavians was mostly in the islands and far north of the mainland - and they were Norwegians not Danes

There would have been movements of traders into the Scottihs burghs as they emerged and no doubt some may have been Danes, or more likely from the former Danelaw area. however only a timy percentage of Scots would have lived in the burghs anyway. The southern part of ancient Bernicia (ie modern Norhumberland) wasn't even part of the Danelaw proper. The Danelaw proper stopped at the Tyne-Tees area. So one can argue about the genetic make up of the Danelaw but it is irrelevent to Scotland anyway :-) The parts of Scotland settled by Scandinavians was mostly in the islands and far north of the mainland - and they were Norwegians not Danes

Well I'm from Detroit and see many British as tourists where I work. All I know is that you are all friendly people. I'd say the Scottish are generally the friendliest, but they are also the ugliest. Very ugly disgusting looking people. Thats stereotyping for sure, but you Brits, certainly the Scots are definitely not blessed with looks. I like how the English don't really care about England. The Scottish patriotism is just annoying and pathetic from the outside. Don't know much about the Welsh.

What is all this "get our FREEDOM" Scotland is one of the freest nations in the world. We AND N.Ireland and Walse can vote on issues in the London parliament affecting England they can not do the same in our parliaments. My family were nationalist back when we had to hide them from the polce etc. when they ran north. It was family in the police that hid them.
But "God Save The Queen" is our National Anthem for "Elizabet the Fist Queen of Scots". Our head of state.

It is very simple.
Place a border between England and Scotland and charge those who wish to enter Scotland (who are not of Scots decent) a tax. Non Scots who live in Scotland should be given fair market value for their homes and sent back to England. All Royal castles and home should be returned to the Scottish people and then opened to tourism, with the revenues being given to Scottish industry for the re-birth of a nation.

@cgms310 Firstly, there is a border between England and Scotland, secondly our nations have achieved more together in 200 years than others do in 1000. Our union has endured for one simple truth, we are stronger than the sum of our parts.
Its worth noting that if you did charge a tax to people entering Scotland, you would loose a HELL of a lot of tourism. That applies to any country.

@Erech01 The airports charge a tax every day per passenger, per taxi, per aircraft etc and the center of London charges every vehicle that enters the city a tax. WE complain bitterly, but we pay it.... Last time I looked, the airports and city were packed!

And London charges tax because nearly 15 million people live there, a huge chunk of the population squeezed into less than 5% of the land, London has more people in it than Scotland, Wales and NI put together! If Scotland started taxing people for wanting to visit no one would bother going, i would change my university if i got charged for crossing a border. Reality needs to give you a good slap.

Oh right sorry I thought you meant something else. Anyway Westminster want to take those benefits away, so they can afford to pay for the Olympic games, 2 aircraft carriers, and 3 Trident submarines for nukes we don't even own! (they rent them from the US!) And on top of that Aghanistan costs us over £2billion a year. That's why I know we can do better being independent. Whatever the arguments about poll results. The fact is that up to now the Scots have been indoctrinated into a pro-union mindset and that can only be changed gradually by educating the electorate as to the true conditions under which we are governed from Westmonster. The NuLiebore Sleaze & Corruption Party, (North British Branch) have done a marvellous job of outlining the union dividend and rapid progress is now being made towards independence.

When I was at school our history lessons included the Roman and Norman invasions of Britain and their fort styles, armour etc., then we moved on to the viking raids and settlements, (viking is actually a verb meaning to go a-raiding). At no time were we taught about our own history except where it touched upon those mentioned. Opinions formed by the establishment smacks of Big Brother.

Well, I made the mistake of once calling a Scotsman British. I was quickly, and quite vulgarly corrected.
Though unlike other mistakes in which I quickly felt like a stupid American, I had to question it. As I didn't refer to him as English, but British, which I thought meant English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish.
Also we consider eachother Americans but go to the south and throw the term yankee around to much and you may find yourself in a scuffle.

It is complicated stuff, but most Scots don't really consider themselves as British. Some do, but they are in the minority.
I would agree with your analogy of "countrymen but just barely". There is a big political movement in Scotland for it to leave the United Kingdom and be an independent political state in its own right. A lot of English people are very resentful of this.
