The Saab Draken was able to land in very short airfields. In this video, tail chute was not deployed immediately after the touchdown. In fact, Drakens deployed their tail chutes even before they touched down..while still being airborne!!!
I know Skip Holm personally, he's an incredible pilot and can handle a jet like it's really wings trapped to his back.
I also know this Draken, it's currently for sale at nearly 50% off. Quite a jet for $175K, but there's four of them on the field where I'm at that are in need od restoration. One two seater, three single seaters and all are reconaissance models. I can also see Skip used the "fire plug" unit to start the engine, there's $300 right there in four seconds! I love jets!!!
Yeah..., I'm sure the Draken wasn't a STOL either.
Googling "SAAB STOL" did return Saab's Gripen (a.k.a., Griffin, Gryphon) including link to a YouTube video of it landing on a straight section of highway.
It also returned the Viggen that apparently had the same capability.
Odd, I've never seen such a fast approach and landing by a J35 and I've seen the aircraft on airshows in Sweden. Apparently Skip Holm (if he was flying this sortie) did not use the brakes much at all but as seen in the video he utilized aerodynamic braking to the fullest. This is common practice among civilian machines to save money and maintenance.
The Draken was actually a STOL aircraft........ but just because it's capable of being a STOL doesn't mean that it has to take off like that every time. The Draken was designed to take off from very short runways in the mountains in the event of an invasion.
@spayum2 No the draken was not a STOL aircraft, it was to hard to land on public roads and the landing speed was to high for the short runway/roads. But the Draken was used on smaller airfields with adjacent parkings in the forest, which gave it a small STOL capability. But not as good as the previous 32 Lansen and the later 37 Viggen. I have made many landings in the Draken but its to risky in a safety perspective to bring it down on public roads.
@ph11p3540 no the draken is not a stol aircraft the the viggen whas maby that plane you are searching for ajs 37 viggen a=attack j=jakt/hunting and the last is s=spaning/recon i think that viggen whas the best swedish have ever made i live in sweden and i love those planes from draken to jas 39 gripen but my favo is viggen
@antenov Actually the Draken were used in the Swedish Bas 60 and Bas 90 systems withs its small airfields. Every airfield has a few highway strips in the vicinity each 1200 meters. These highway strips were not used often by any aircraft but the draken could and did use them. Take off with afterburner is 670m and landing is 600m with chute. On the video its doing a airodynamical landing without using breaks. Sorry for my bad English.
The Draken is 3rd on my list of favorite aircraft. Right behind the Su-37. The A-10 Thunderbolt2 holds 1st though. Some might say it's ugly, but to me it's just a "Different kind of pretty." <3<3<3
The A-10 really fights hard and comes home at the end of the day showing off it's cuts and bruises from a good days work.
ScarecrowK, I like rugged airplanes too! "Ugly" is a relative term...only sheeps bleath "en-vogue", and these three are just extreme designed "out of the box", kinda...
Sounds SOOO familiar! I lived 20 years near Finnish Air Force base when Saab Drakens were used in Finland. Very beautiful plane with lots of power. And high quality! Not A SINGLE fighter was lost in Finland due to technical problems! Just one plane, due to pilot error, altitude meter miscalibration error.
The good ol' Ironing Board ;) Had the chance to see Draken twice in finnish airshows before the plane went out of service in the air force. Nice but rough-looking plane it is...
The Draken (Dragon in swedish) was designed in the 1950's to intercept Soviet jet bombers. The wing design was doubledelta which was revolutionary at the time. They were built between 1955-1974.
Hi. I don´t remember where this one (N543J) belongs, but the "brown" ones are actually olive green. The were all bought from the Royal Danish Air Force (1 F-35 (N20XD) 6 RF-35 (N106XD N117FR N111XD N116XD N217FR N119XD) and 6 TF-35(N166TP N167TP N168TP N155TP N156TP N169TP) - bought by National Test Pilot School, Mojave, CA. and Flight Test Dynamics Inc., Inyokern, CA. It was a pleasure seeing the here in Denmark, where they "belonged" - enjoy them in the U.S. :-)

I thought this jet was a STOL capable aircraft in event that the airbase runways were bombed out. It sure looked like the jet took 3000 ft of runway.

It's not STOL, but it does have a more rugged undercarriage, allowing it to use standard highway strips as emergency airbases.
