Yes there was Speedway shop on the corner. It was run by Taffy Owen the ex Belle Vue rider. The Coach was my mam and dad's local. Was not a bad pint of Robbies. There was an organ and every weekend the local singers (including my dad) would get up and do their thing. I was there last week. All those thousands of people who lived in the triangle of Cross St, Hyde Rd and Wellington St and now it's a bloody huge Tesco's! Is it progress?
I used to be at the Belle Vue Speedway every Saturday night with my parents back In the early to mid 70's as a kid. Pulling down the Hyde road stadium was an Injustice to the sport.
well i cant understand why they ever pulled it down anyway!! it must of been taking loads of money!!but i surpose the offer they got for the land was to big. so the public did not get mad with the town hall they waited 10 years i think before they built anything on it. if its true i dont know but when people started asking why!! they came up that they could not feed the animals!! was it TRUE! i dont think so. as the u.s.a bought the bobs
it is a real shame how belle vue has turned out i wasn't born when all the rollercoasters zoo and funfair was about. what amazes me the most is how much the place has deteriorated in such a short time i look at pictures in the nags head pub and it looked like belle vue was booming now its one of the roughest areas in manchester and is now over run with crime grime and drugs!
good vid mate take no notice of the stupid remarks i lived in levenshulme back in the 60s and had great times in belle vue even worked on the waltzers now and then that was about 72-6( stan stewert were are ya mate) used to goto the roller sking too ha ha by the time it closed belle vue had had its daty if i was to be honest for me personaly the scenic railway was the bees knees still remember that first drop the brakeman had some bottle ha ha to all gortonians who left england well done
Brings back memories, BV was the greatest speedway track ever!!!Wasnt there an old track spare shop on the corner(im going back to the 80s mind!!!). My dad first took me in 82, great times.
Listen mate, like I told the other fella, its aimed at people who used to live in the area, Belle vue once stood close to this spot, a lot of ex gortonians are now living abroad and im certain they will be interested in the changes, if you dont like the videos DONT LOOK simple as that, I dont go to your page and slam down your stuff, so please..if you havent anything constructive to say, then please just dont comment, thank you.
