Great video. I go to Henderson State. I considered Riddle but HSU has fantastic training and opporitunites at about half the cost. Riddle would be awesome though.
Thanks for sharing this video. I am going for my CPL in a couple of weeks. It always helps to have different people's advice and new theories on flight. Thanks again!!
Someone explain to me how you fly an airplane "Lazy". I hear a lot of my CFI students say this as something they learned from their commercial instructor. It is called a Lazy 8 because of the track of the longitudinal axis on the horizon. It looks like an 8 on it's side. Interesting note to instructors teaching this maneuver- show your student the first Lazy 8 figure in the AFH and tell them that you are going to perform these today. It looks like a Cuban 8.
I am suprised to see such slopiness from UND Aviation. If they think the maneuver should be flown differently from the way FAA Airplane Flying Handbook recommends, they should state so in the video. The rest of the video, point picking, bank angles, etc etc are all good advice and accurate. It deserves maybe 2 stars because of the airspeed reference errors. Also, why bother to have a graphical AS indicator representation if it does not reflect accurate info?
This video is a mixed bag. It contradicts FAA guidance with regards to airspeed.
Video states "slowest speed at 45 point" and AS shows Vs1+approx 20KIAS at 90 deg point.
Interestingly enough, the PTS does NOT address airspeed at all, except at entry and 180 degree points. However,FAA Airplane flying handbook states "When the airplane completes 90° of the turn, the bank should be at the maximum angle (approximately 30°), the airspeed should be at its minimum (5 to 10 knots above stall speed)"
I want to thank UND guys for putting this up, I was soo confused on how to do this dam maneuver! Im actually a riddle student, actually I think the rivalry we have between each other is good and makes us better pilots. however I dont think is cool when we start critizing each other, because even though we attend these competitive universities we're all in this because of our love for aviation. and I apologize for the people that make us look bad, just remember not all of us are the same.
I definitely agree. I love the school and am excited to go back in a few weeks. I'm hopin to finish up instrument in a semester and start on my commercial by the start of next semester... I can't stand the natural hate towards most of us because we're "spoiled." Most of us aren't.
It provides a good high level explanation for us pilots that are just entering this manuvers and need a macro view to then jump on details. thaks for doing this.!
I am actually flying a piper arrow while I attempt my horrible lazy eights. I think about 21 inches of M.P. is about right... By the way, X-plane blows my mind. We have it on our MOTUS FTD's at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

The examiner told me that he couldn't remember a student performing a lazy 8 as correct as i did (CPL). Anyway, some stuff that helped for me:
-Make it slow, and i mean ridiculously slow. It will feel fcked up but just do it.
-Slow speed. In my c172rg, 90kt, 23/18" was perfect.
-Stick to the same airspeed! That way the maneuver will be the same every time.
-Don't just "drop the nose" through the horizon... SLOOOOW.
-When you reach 30 bank, start decrease bank direct. Don't wait with it.

@Javi430 Thanks UND and ERAU from an Aerosim Flight Academy student as well. I passed my commercial checkride yesterday with help of ERAU material.

I've never heard a WORSE explanation of a lazy eight... And the animation only adds insult to injury.

The key word is "fly".

If you fly it correctly the slowest point is at the 90 degree point. You are obviously doing it incorrectly.
anguissette 4 years ago
yeah, i think they got it wrong, maybe what they need to say is the highest pitch is in the 45, but its not necesarily the slowest point.
