  • Wunderbar, ein junger strahlender Tenor. Musikalisch und glänzend.

  • Even Mozart would be content.

  • he was voted 4th best tenor ever

  • There are singers, so very few, who cannot be measured or compared by any normal standards. It is more than perfect, it is truly divine. Thank you for posting this and God Bless Youtube.

  • TY opera beauty for posting this gem

  • I think Fritz returned very fast with the angels. Of another way, why so short life?

  • Congratulations Germany 10 points!!!

  • how could it happen that he died age 35!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bravissimissimo...

  • Maravilloso, genial.

  • This man is the BEST. No matter what he sings.... I have heard others... but he is ALWAYS at the top... Causing one to wonder what he would have accomplished had he lived longer.......

  • Glad that Piotr Beczala is being mentioned in this context. Apart from being a great singer, he has great taste - he is a massive Wunderlich fan. If he were in charge of music training, he says, there would be one compulsory course for all singers entitled "Fritz Wunderlich singing".

Jonas Kaufmann has Wunderlich as his cellphone ringtone, Juan Diego Flórez listens to him on long flights and Rolando Villazón appeared on the recent DVD of FW's life. Speaks volumes about this very great tenor.

  • @justaprojection -TY for this valued info. Glad his peers shared our love for him.He was very special.

  • @paulostroff99 My pleasure! Fritz was unique - not merely the greatest singer in history, but a genius of an all-round musician - he could have had a glittering career as a horn player, and he was an astonishing sight-reader - extremely rare in singers - as reported by Joan Sutherland et al when he took over the lead in Handel's Alcina in a live radio broadcast on one run-through. His singing shows a depth of understanding I haven't heard in anyone else. I could listen to him for ever.

  • @justaprojection -TY again. Fritz can and will not ever be replaced. He was uniqe

  • Beautiful xo

  • "la voce assoluta" if it comes to singing tamino. and please, don't come with other examples like domingo because you guys out there won't be able to convince me that there is another better one...

  • The best german Tenor ever but i hop i will as good as him

he has got a beautiful voice :D

so thanks for this beauiful video the quality is verry well

  • FRITZ!!!!!

  • tecnica,voce,freschezza e leggerezza : che bellezza !

  • Thank you!

  • excellence, beauty, magic..

  • Simply PERFECTION.

  • His voice is the clearest of any singer

  • I love Wunderlich´s version of this piece, simply exquisite. Thanks so much for sharing :)!

  • Not only Mozart, every composer should be sung vocal- technically in that way - even Wagner should not be "barked", or only sung in laser way concentration (this does not mean to have a "ringing" , metallic voice at all !) .

It then just depends on the instrument = the body , whether the particular voice is right for Mozart, or for Wagner or others - and then learn the right style !!

Here we hear perfection how to sing & perform Mozart !!!

  • This is a real mozart performer.Thank you

  • ¡¡¡DE LOS MAS GRANDES!!! UN ARTISTA INMENSO, MAGNIFICO CANTANTE Y

UN GRAN MUSICO. DUCTILICIMA PERSONALIDAD. ARTISTA DE LOS VERDA-

    DERAMNTE IMBORRABLE.

  • Fritz Wunderlich resembles Christopher Plummer

  • I despair of humanity that anyone could have disliked this.

  • @antongardner2 There are a lot of sick people out there - they want THEIR tenors to have better ratings - is ridiculous. Not only is this absolutely wonderful - Wunderlich is THE standard for this aria. Others do very well, a la Alva, but Wunderlich has that magic which is indescribable.

  • A wonderful example of what appears to be effortless singing brought about by a mastery of vocal skills! Bravo!

  • I've heard many fine tenors sings the Bildnissaria, including Domingo, Pavrotti and now Kaufmann, but Wunderlich was a master interpreter of Mozartian music and above all phrasing. He owns this aria lock, stock and barrel. The beauty he brought to it is surreal

  • Every tenor gives this aria a try; yes Placido Domingo and Pavrotti(in Italian). But compared to Wunderlich, they fall short. Fritz owned this song, lock, stock and barrel. PERIOD. It's his. He was the master interpreter of Mozart's vocal works.

  • Beautiful. In this vid he is certainly lip-synching to his own recording, which is nonetheless wonderful.

  • This aria is made for Fritz Wunderlich. The Voice of an Angel.

  • Wunderlich's is a beautiful voice; sadly, a little too long ago to have experienced it live. I am very fond of Tauber's rendition of "Dies' Bildnis" - he's more remebered today for Lehar than Mozart but was feted early in his career for his interpretatons of the classical repertoire - but I think the clarity of Wunderlich's singing wins it for me.

  • Sounds like Piotr Beczala!

  • @anastaire33 Piotr is a good friend of mine , but : Piotr sounds like Wunderlich! (put it that way!!)

  • @wagnerian77 WOW!!!! you know him??? *spasz* he is AMAZING!!!! i heard him in lucia di lammermoor when he was on the met broadcast and have been crazy over his voice ever since. i even hoped joseph calleja would be sick in the transmission for lucia di lammermoor this year so piotr beczala could magically fill in for him, but sadly it didn't happen. Anyways, you are a VERY lucky person!! :D And yup, piotr basically sounds like wunderlich. im so proud of piotr representing poland! :D

  • Noone ever sang this aria better!

  • Noone ever sang this aria better!

  • Wunderlich owns this aria forever.

  • Absolute perfection! Such a shame he's no longer with us.

  • Every time I start liking any other tenor I just have to play this t9o be reminded of what tru perfection is!

  • Fritz Wunderlich combined perfection and beauty. He is by far my favourite tenor. Strangely I can't recall ever having heard him sing in anything other than German - such was the fashion in the 60s.

  • Magie et perfection ... Grâces vous soient rendues Monsieur Wunderlich ...

    Merci pour le post .

  • Nice playback by Wunderlich.

  • @AfroPoli He is actually singing here. He had such a voice that he wouldn't even open his mouth wide like others do. His voice and sound are so natural that is almost unbelievable, but this is his truth. And our privilege to hear him sing like this.

    Saludos.

  • @reinadegrillos Nah, he is not singing. Watch his other video of the same aria, which is really live. You will see the difference.

  • @AfroPoli

German TV was famous for its playback. And if one looks closely, he opens his mouth much more here than he does when really singing and he is not using his facial muscles. Here he visually opens up on 'ewig' but when he is actually singing, you can see him cover the sound. Same for words like 'die'. In any case, it is his voice and it's magnificent singing.

  • @vanzofaust I agree. No doubt about the singing. But they did a really good job for the playback. Reminds me of those productions from Hamburg (Freischutz etc) where it is difficult to see if it is playback or not.

  • @AfroPoli lol its not playback it was his first concert in the opera 1966 i think. Anyway hes opening his mouth so wide to produce a better clearer sound of the vocal "a,e,i,o,u" thats it.

  • Che magnifica leggerezza d'emissione!

  • This is Wundelich at his top. Exqusite. This is lyrical yet done with full voice and beautiful nuances.Wht a loss to the world that he tragically died at such a young age.

  • wunderbar!

  • one word: goosebumps

  • I mentioned Fritz Wunderlich to a young German friend....he had no idea who he was.....

  • This man's voice is so amazing. As a girl in my parents' home, I was exposed to this man's recordings. I never saw a video of him. He is so handsome. And the voice is second to none. Mario Lanza... others of his time... He was so great! The unfortunate part is that persons who are great.... especially as regards the arts... are often taken from us before we can even realize they are here. It is part of life. Those given a great gift are gone too soon.

  • Can't we ever enjoy an opera singer such as Wunderlich without diminishing other artists?

  • @rosagorda I agree, as long as it is acknowledged that this has never been sung more exquisitely, with as much beauty, elegance and heart. It's not Wunderlich's fault that he sets a standard here that is hard to beat.

  • He sang the hell out of Granada...I wish he would have sung it in Spanish... what a voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sublime !

  • Is there need to say much of anything after that?!!

  • Wunderlich...que maravilla.

  • how can it be that 3 people dont like it??! omG ...

  • The first rendition I ever heard of this aria was by Fritz Wunderlich. I never heard it any better and prbobly I never will. Still, each time I listen to this, although knowing that it is marvellous, I am struck of how good it really is! One of the few moments, when time stands still, being busy listening to this beauty.

  • Other singers may do a great job with this aria, but I'm sorry...THIS IS PERFECTION!!!

  • @TaylorComstock

Amen and amen again. Fritz is perfection in anything Mozart. No one else comes close.

  • Great performance. Thanks for posting

  • Mozart would be so happy if he could here, this beautiful singing.

  • One word: goosebumps.

Also I would say this should be mandatory education for tenors, if not singers in general.

I think we should celebrate the great performances of singers (at least since the 20th century has brought the possibility of recording)

  • Anybody out there who could or can sing this aria this perfect? No! Not to this day!

  • Mozart would be so happy if he could hear Wunderlich to sing

  • This man will forever be associated w/this aria as Caruso is w/O Sole Mio or Vesti La Giubba. It remains his aria.

  • love it

  • Simply divine!! :)

I know another young Swiss Tenor who sings this song exceptionally well....his name is Urs Buhler. :)

  • You mean from Il Divo? No way!!!

  • Just a note to suggest that here the video is produced I believe after the sound recording: he's mouthing to his own recording. Much more interesting to me is the "live" YT clip of this aria with piano titled: Fritz Wunderlich Recital: Mozart-Zauberfloete Tamino...

  • I completely disagree. I've watched WAY too many videos of Wunderlich singing and there is nothing here to suggest dubbing. In fact it was during this time period that live performance videos were being produced and "dubbing" technology was much too poor to use. Watch his Lensky's aria, O wie ängstlich, and all his performances in his DG documentary and you'll see it's all unbelievably real

  • A beautiful voice, but he is lip syncing here. It's quite obvious if you watch the video closely.

  • @piustwelfth He isn't lipsyncing, the video and audio track are slightly offset, it is a pretty common degradation in video from the 60s

  • You can tell by the way he's singing that he is lipsyncing. If it was due to a mistimed video/audio track, then the difference would be consistent -- which it is not. I think he has a beautiful voice, but he is not singing live in this clip.

  • And the orchestra is...............doing what.

  • What orchestra?

  • The movement of his adams apple is a strong indication that he is singing. I would guess that the sound track is not synced with the video.

  • Amazing technique....hands down my favorite singer. His voice is rich and effortless. He keeps the voice light through his passagio and his high notes are brilliant!

  • hallo operaschönheit, wo immer Du lebst, vielen Dank für die Musik, Werner from D. ... G.

  • I absolutely agree with alkra1967. His technique is perfect. The voice is full of rich harmonics, the attack is soft and gentle, yet he can reinforce the voice at will; the legato is superb. And its not only technique; his performance is full of insight. He sings also with the heart, with warmth, without ever moving away from the pure style Mozart needs. Its the best rendition of this aria.

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful voice, for me a discovery ! I am sure Mozart is pleased with this wonderful interpretation. Absolute perfection.

  • For me a discovery...Beautiful voice.....expecially in the Lieder .

You should listen him singing the Schumann "Dichterliebe"...pure poetry....

  • Absolutely the gold standard when it comes to this aria--a combination of unearthly precision and kamikaze ferocity.

He lived to be one year older than Mozart himself did.

  • He is the master (not only) of this aria and I "fear" in respect of successing singers that this will last forever!

Love it AND HIM (his singing and voice) so much!

  • This rendition is a synonym for perfection in Mozart style, vocal technique, characterization and interpretation. Please remove Domingos Video from this posting. It hurts!!

  • I agree with you 100% :)

  • @Vielflieger01

Same opinion. Domingo and Pavarotti (heard him as Tamino a few years ago on TV - CRUEL,VERY CRUEL PERFORMANCE!) et al. are not able to sing this special aria in the way Mozart wanted it. Fritz is close to heaven in this aria. For me - he is the reincarnation of Mozart. You may call me insane - it does not interest me... I am convinced, that Mozart came back as Fritz, as a tenor, to sing his arias the way he meant it... (Belmonte, Tamino et. al.).

  • @Cessie1456 hahahha i had to laugh when i read it hihihihihi i guess u like fritz wunderlich at most heh? he was the best yes!!!! .....but reincarnation of mozart to sing his arias how he wanted it...man u should be a comedian..and dont get me wrong i like ur comment^^

  • Next to Pavarotti probably the only tenor that really makes me silent in every way.

  • I bought a Fritz Wunderlich record in the l960's only because it was cheap (88 cents U.S.), and I knew nothing of Fritz Wunderlich. But what a big surprise when I played the record. I had never heard a better singer. I grew up listening to this record and became a classical music fan. Fritz Wunderlich became my standard for judging other tenors. So when the "Three Tenors" came along, they were like (your choice of words).

  • Jonas who?

  • the world's greatest tenor EVER!

  • Comment removed

Saludos.

  • Rarely a tenor has obtain such touching and sincere musical stratospheres ! Musically with supreme phrasing, diction and breath control are all here for emotion purposes. Nothing is exagarated and on top of the latter qualities there is an urgency in delivering each note which is one of the immense talent of Wunderlich (see Schumann Dichterliebe). Thank you for posting this great document !

  • embenador, congratulations for your comment! you bring it to the point!

  • Fantastisch

  • Thanks for posting this. FW is perfect. This is the best version of this aria I've ever heard.

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I do think Pavarotti was somewhat over-rated, thanks to the vast attention he got from the musically uneducated.

  • Comment removed

  • He's not a fool.Pavarotti gave many unmusical performances in the 80's.He could hardy sync with the orchestra,he didn't shade his voice and his phrasing was cliche.

  • AMAZING!!

I heard numerous versions of this aria by many tenors, but I must say-- THIS VERSION IS CLOSE TO PERFECTION!!

What a voice!! And he FEELS what he is singing!!

    HATS OFF, Monsieur Fritz!!

    And hats off, Herr Mozart!!

  • Mozart was the greatest genius of all time in any field of human activity. Taken from us in his prime.

  • To watch him work this stage, and not see a single ounce of tension in that singing is incredible, Mind blowing for a song of this difficulty. everything is hooked up. every note has resonance.

  • Wunderlich's voice is a miracle of sound.

  • No Voice should ever be compared to another. One should simply take each voice, each sound, for what it is in and of itself.

  • Einfach wunderschön und die Selle anrührend. Danke!

  • Phrasing, control, tone. musical interpretation, sheer beauty of sound can all be compared objectively. Certainly Pavarotti's fame was more due to modern marketing than his actual ability. Wunderlich's ability, on the other hand, is greater than his fame.

  • In addition to all the technical and voice quality accolades, this man has one of the most touching musical aesthetic sensibilities around. Touching - ravishing performance. Thanks!

  • Outstanding. I have just finished working in this opera and am sick of it, but to hear this version is magical. Wonderful singer. I think he is a much better singer than pavarotti. For me Pav is the 7/10 singer with the 10/10 voice, compared to say the opposite which is Bergonzi or Callas, 10/10 singers with 8 or 9/10 voices. Wunderlich looked like he might have developed into 10/10 in both categories, soaring beauty, light but perfectly supported, sounds effortless, full of emotion. Amazing.

  • Pavarotti can't act either

  • Pavarotti isn't (nor are many others) close to Wunderlich's level. Controlled power and technique from a modest genius.

  • I revere Wunderlich as much as the next person but were his and Pavarotti's repertoires in German opera all that similar?

  • Tone, phrasing, control, musical interpretation can all be objectively compared no matter the repertoire. Pavarotti's fame was greater than his ability and due more to modern marketing. Wunderlich's ability was far greater than his fame.

  • Wunderlich's is the result of a beautiful tone grounded to a greater technique.

Simply stunning. One of my faves (along with Bjorling, Gigli, and Kraus). One of the few 'greats' imho.

  • He is not the best tenor ever, he is by far THE BEST SINGER EVER

  • Had this man not tragically died at the sunrise of his career, he would have definitely given Pavarotti and Domingo a run for their money. The beauty and clarity of his tenor sound is immediately recognizable. And to compare Wunderlich to Lanza is pointless. It is a question of husbanding and cultivating the voice after years of practice and commitment to technique to bring it to a pristine professional operatic level. Wunderlich WAS an

opera singer. Lanza played one in the movies.

  • freakin crap freakin crap freakin crap..............

Honestly...Fritz. I've listened to this song over 500 times and in no way is it getting old. Mozart's perfection & Fritz Wunderlich = freakin' crap.

Of course when I say "freakin' crap" I mean that I'm literally speechless, so the first emotion that comes over me (besides the shivers) is a frustrated & confused "freakin' crap...".

I hope he was a believer. God truly gave him a voice that will never be given again.

  • Do you think God would allow such a voice to go to hell?

  • Thats a sad thought that no one else will have his voice. I wish I could have his voice. lol. I sang this for private voice this semester and it is tough. Way tough. I'm not even 20 years old yet, a fairly young tenor. Has anyone else attempted this aria?

  • "I hope he was a believer. God truly gave him a voice that will never be given again. "

I doubt that God, should He exist, would give a fig about whether FW believed or not. He does not appear to care about anything else, so why should He care about FW.

  • there's so much hatred in you. you need help.

  • he came from germany, there's a 95% chance he was lutheran or catholic lmfao XD

    A wonderful version!!

  • demasiadooo genioooooooo!!

    forever

    wunderlichhhhhh

  • A Swiss lawyer once said to me that Fritz's

death was no accident that he was in fact murdered, did anyone else hear such news?

  • Just the very best ever. Perfection of style and voice quality. What a loss! Thank goodness for recordings--catch him on Daphne, Mattaeus Passion, Capriccio (Italian tenor to die for with Popp--Pretre, live from Vienna), Weinachtsoratorium etc. Whole Tamino with Boehm-don't miss it. Ease of projection and interpretative genius make him for me the beat ever German tenor-did he record Lohengrin? Hope he and Corelli are living it up in tenor heaven!

  • addenda to my previous post: This is a master class on how to sing mozart !

  • An angelic voice .. this is one of the most remarkable videos available on YouTube ... achingly beautiful ..it is a tragedy that this voice was stilled so young . Fritz Wunderlich was a remarkable tenor ...How lucky we are to have performances like this available at our command !

  • wunderlich = wonderful !

  • I love him!!!

  • As he proves with this aria, Fritz was much too perfect for this world.
