Can someone elaborate on the exact usage of an abort rocket system like this? As far as I can remember, once you start the rocket, you're pretty much limited to either shutting down the engine or riding the thing into where ever the thing takes you.
@bassbone1785 An abort motor is attached to the capsule. It is used when the rocket that launches the capsule fails. The abort motor pulls the capsule away from the rocket very fast which is nice if the rocket fails by exploding. Look at video's of the Saturn 5 or Soyuz launcher to see examples of launch abort systems.
Sometimes I am totally amazed at how simplisic comments are and how out of touch the pubilc really is on rockets and NASA. The Aries rocket motor was devoloped by the private sector under the direction of NASA. Believe it or not NASA has learned a lot since the Saturn program. Space flight is a whole lot more economical then in the 50's and 60's. If you really want to bankrupt the country just forget everything we have learned and use Saturn at about 100 times the cost.
@BosenMike99 they fail to account for inflation, it cost 7billion in 1960's - 70's dollars to do the Saturn program, 15 rockets (not all launched either) $40504021788.46 today...... . that is the biggest problem, that and they don't realize the ares V is 25% more powerful using substantially less fuel.
I say dust off the old Saturn V blueprints! You'll save hundreds of millions in research and development costs and you'll have an already proven system that will get you to the moon.
For real. ANd the "main stream" morons gave u 3 thumbs down because they are dumed down. Its not like the Military doesnt have black projects with new propulsion technology..but noooo. Foolish peons.
i was reading about this in my pop sci magazine i get and it does like 0-450mph in like 1.5 seconds and puts about 15G's on the people in the spacecraft and it said they would rather have broken bones then to be dead

Cool! 1960's Saturn technology with a much bigger price tag! Way to waste money NASA!!

I know, right? It's a really huge waste of money to invest on potentially saving astronauts lives! :D

NOT what I meant! A huge waste to reinvent something that worked fine 30 frickin years ago at 1/10 the cost!

I KNOW! What a joke! Nasas new motto should be 2 steps forward, 3 back for ten times the cost!! LOL!!!

Nice, so it's about the same as a modern ejection seat... they do around 16 G's.

Then you should not have any trouble with emptiness of your fuel tank, that is untill your wallet is full - or fuel prices are reasonable..:).
