Holy (you pick the word) - I've been seriously listening to classical music since 1960, some 52 years. I've never heard such a fine performance from a bunch of kids and Aimi Kobayashi. I think there is a better recording of this (EMI Classics - Samson Francois - Louis Fremaux - Monte-Carlo Symphony) but not by much and they're pros not a bunch of teenagers. I've imagined being in a youth group that plays this well but always thought it to be a fantasy till now. Bravo Toshiaki Umeda and all.
@7pianoforte It's all in the phrasing. On this site are some of her performances starting at 3 years old. They make more musical sense than my capabilities at 68. Music is a phenomena that plays in the minds of human beings (and birds) - some more than others. Listen to Emily Bear play easy tunes (Over a Rainbow), the phrasing and rhythm is exquisite, that's innate - something you're born with - very hard to learn.
I am slightly confused. On the one hand this is absolutely wonderful, on the other, there's something not quite right with the notion of wunderkinder in the 21st century. Perhaps pacing life a little more naturally is not a bad idea to ensure a long, happy, creative life that has some poetic value. Want to write bravo here, but mustn't. My daughter's (1yr old) first piano lesson: 2016. As for playing Chopin, she has to fall in love first.
@stanhin "When you overpractice, the music seems to come out of your pocket. If you play with a feeling of 'Oh, I know this,' you play without that drop of fresh blood that is necessary. At every concert I must have the unexpected, the unforeseen. I want to risk, to dare. I want to be surprised. That way the music can bloom anew. The act is the same, but each time it's different."-Rubinstein. Or, if you're more into this type of performance, I can pop you some popcorn and you can enjoy the act.
@existentialist18 Of course Rubinstein's performance is better! Why on earth would you feel the need to compare a 15-year-old to Rubinstein? I'm sure Rubinstein's own performances at age 15 wouldn't stand up to comparison with his mature work. That doesn't change the fact that this is a genuinely felt performance, as I'm sure you would believe if the picture were replaced with that of a European male.
I hate to say it, but I don't think there is that much emotion in it at all. I much prefer seeing a 80 something year old Rubinstein pour years of life into his piece; something that just can't be compensated for at that age. She is very talented, but it's just not the same.
Aimi, I can't help but imagine you are playing this concerto at final round of 2015 Chopin Competition and receiving best applauds at the end of performance. I am of course every Aimi's fans are so looking forward to making it happen. I believe you can do it. Until then please keep low-profile in mass media. They give you nothing but pressure just as Asada mao, a young talented figure skater, Ishikawa Ryo, a young pro golfer and to mention a few. Just play the piano as your passion guides you.
I can only echo - and emphasize - Lalita and Francis’ (concerto35) comments. The orchestra is astonishing for one with so many players who seem to be mere children. I could hear nothing but pure excellence.
And how could one summarise Aimi’s charm as perfectly as Francis has done: “. . in listening to her, one becomes enraptured in an ecstatic conversation. She transcends the notes themselves, enveloping one in an experience of mystical contemplation.”
“. . enraptured in an ecstatic conversation.” Remember that!
Of course classic Aimi. Thanks so much for sharing this Christina. There is very little more I can say about out musical genius than I have already over the years said, but I will add this time that the orchestra of young musicians was fantastic too. There truly is so much incredible talent in this world if one wants to go looking for it. It was fantastic to see Aimi with a new performance and an entirely new piece. Thanks again.
Aimi infuses every note with pathos. She addresses the heart, and in listening to her, one becames enraptured in an estatic conversation. She transcends the notes themselves, enveloping one in an experience of mystical contemplation. How can she do this at only 15 years? It is a gift from God held in trust by Aimi for the world.
All these new videos of Aimi! Christina, it's like Christmas. :) Thank you so much. On the video: My the orchestra looks very young indeed but they still sound very good and Aimi, of course, is playing like an angel (and she looks like she's quite enjoying herself, too!).

The orchestra is really quite good, especially considering the apparent ages of the young musicians! IMHO.

@concerto35: She could do it when she was 5. She can do it because, as you say, she transcends the notes (material), becoming music itself (spirit).
