Single payer would save like 350 billion in administrative costs alone, due to hospitals/doctors/clinics having to fill out a myriad of different forms from various insurance companies, and also follow different reimbursement plans for each company.

Also did you account for the fact that income taxes are significanly higher and most citizens are poorer as a result? You can't have first world schools, services, infrastructure, etc. without paying for it. Yes it is, tejano2828. Health care didn't come in time for a colleague of mine who worked at CIGNA with me. She died after a year of working without insurance at one of the largest insurance companies from pneumonia. She was a single mother of three small children, and a single-payer plan would've prevented this needless death of my friend.

Many of the socialized health care programs are operating at deficits, most countries have institutied counter measures like enfocing co-pays. In frances system they are experiecing some hospital closures, which causes problems, because if you have to go farther then that means you have a higher mortality rate when you need emergency care.
All 48 million can go through any emergency room at any hospital in this country and receive FREE healthcare. And why don't we teach people to live healthier lives and disease prevention. For example, cigarettes should be $20.00 a pack and the taxes and some of the profit should go to finance FREE healthcare.
And you already pay for them via higher insurance premiums... You're paying for them anyway, so why would you be unwilling to do so under a more efficient system?
Secondly yearly check-ups and routine exams are part of living a healthier life and this is denied to the uninsured but wouldn't be under single payer...

Single payer would save like 350 billion in administrative costs alone, due to hospitals/doctors/clinics having to fill out a myriad of different forms from various insurance companies, and also follow different reimbursement plans for each company.

The new laws do not address health care costs which is the real problem. Overzealous regulation has created sky high health care prices. The new laws are designed to bankrupt the health insurance industry to force people into a single payer system.

I hope we do bankrupt the insurance industry so that we all have a single payer system, which is what pretty much 75 percent of the world has and has been working much better than our system. Im pretty sure that the new bill helps the insurance industry by forcing people to by insurance. its another bailout all over again with the insurance industry.

Yes it is, tejano2828. Health care didn't come in time for a colleague of mine who worked at CIGNA with me. She died after a year of working without insurance at one of the largest insurance companies from pneumonia. She was a single mother of three small children, and a single-payer plan would've prevented this needless death of my friend.
So, here's to your memory, Christine. RIP, my friend.

@woostopalypse Well your stats don't jibe even with the White House. Reality is that close to 90% of Americans like their healthcare and are happy with it. I am not rich and I am happy with my healthcare. Do I think costs are too high? Yes - but Obama even admits his healthcare laws do little to nothing to deal with that problem. Healthcare costs are the real problem.

Single payer health care systems pay less per capital than America does. America actually spends nearly double than Canada. There is no reason why we can't go to single payer. You'd still be covered along with everyone else.

Seems like a lot for such a small percentage, lets come up with tort reform, if the state wants to create free clinics for the TRULY destitute then I am ok with that, but taxing the 5% will not equate to the kind of service people want. Tax base will then have to tax the middle class.

Even the stats from the Obama administration show 85% of Americans are insured and are happy. 7% of the uninsured are illegal aliens. 3% already qualify for government insurance but don't sign up for it, and the last 5% CAN afford health care, but refuse to do so. The lastest polls from zogby, etc show that Americans are upset with the COST of care such as medcine, not the insurance companies.

SINGLE-PAYER IS THE ONLY SOLUTION.
It does NOT mean government runs healthcare, it simply means that it funds it. The delivery will be private, but not-for-profit. It will also allow free-choice, and cut costs for healthcare.

further, I believe we can create a solution that is equitable for all parties, but goverment competition is only one and should be the last one at best, lets start on tort reform, measure the impact on that. Many of the socialized health care programs are operating at deficits, most countries have institutied counter measures like enfocing co-pays. In frances system they are experiecing some hospital closures, which causes problems, because if you have to go farther then that means you have a higher mortality rate when you need emergency care.

The answer is LESS -- so the free market can inexpensively and efficiently distribute much-needed healthcare services to ALL American citizens.
But, of course, thats not what those in power in Washington D.C. really want.

Just because Americans are uninsured doesn't mean they can't receive health care; nonprofits and government-run hospitals provide services to those who don't have insurance, and it is illegal to refuse emergency medical service because of a lack of insurance.

Healthy people who take care of themselves will have to pay for the burden of those who smoke, are obese, etc.
A long, painful transition will have to take place involving lost insurance industry jobs, business closures, and new patient record creation.
Loss of private practice options and possible reduced pay may dissuade many would-be doctors from pursuing the profession

Malpractice lawsuit costs, which are already sky-high, could further explode since universal care may expose the government to legal liability, &the possibility to sue someone with deep pockets usually invites more lawsuits
Govt is more likely to pass more restrictions or increase taxes on smoking, fast food, etc., leading to a further loss of personal freedoms
Patient confidentiality is likely to be compromised since centralized health information will likely be maintained by the govt

In fact, the likelihood is exactly the reverse of what you suggest. Under privatized insurance, patients are denied vital procedures all the time. I speak from experience. We pay for those crooks who take money from health insurance companies and big pharma. More people in the USA die from lack of health care(due to rationing because they can't afford care), that die in our present wars(that only benefit many of our big corporations).
