Indeed, but I'll add more to that. Why does everyone need to be a parent? There are enough volunteers to satisfy the minimum amount of required parents. We're probably far beyond that minimum.

Since we have enough volunteers, people can opt for non-parenthood. For these people, the arguments for whether or not they can be good parents are irrelevant.

This seems to make gay couples' case for them in that children being raised by gay families who are now being forced to cohabitate rather than marry would do better if their gay parents could actually marry.

Marriage is an institution; the same as the military, government or religion. It's kinda sick and disheartening, but it's reality. Dress it up with flowery romance all you like, but it's just dressing, it was made to keep society in an order. A marriage license is just the states way of recognizing two people as a monogamous couple thus granting them certain rights. This also makes it easier for them to have babies and keep up the population.
