personally me and ym brother would have to say andariel from "diablo 2"
because when we first played it we spent so long getting there and figuring everything out and when we finally got to her we freaked out at just how effin powerful and BIG she was, and to me that boss battle set the bar for the epicness that was going to happen later in the game.
Goro from the original Mortal Kombat. He's the only character in the game I can't beat. I've beaten Shang Tsung, when my friend got me to him, but Goro take a lot more damage than most characters and has that mother fucking stomp move... not to mention he does more damage than Kefka did to reality...
@solidawesomeness noooo hes talking about okami, you play as a sun goddess in the form of a wolf using a celestial paint brush to rid the world of a dark multi headed serpent known as orochi....its a reallly good game
it knew how to make a great atmosphere for a great boss fight. both characters, shirtless, showing their manly abs, having a fist fight on top of the ruins of metal gear and to top it of, meryl has a nuclear module strapped to her that will go off in 2 minutes.
and this fight honestly feels like it has little to do with snakes mission. it's all personal, this is only about those 2 and nothing else in the world matters. great atmosphere for a good boss fight
When you beat the elite 4 usally thats all you do then your done and thers just a bunch of trainers but no, theres ONE last opponet thats stronger than anything and trust me i've worked my butt off to beat him the trainer RED
When I think of retro bosses, the first one that comes to mind is Red Falcon from Contra III The Alien Wars. This guy will completely tear you up on hard mode.
Lui Buu from Dynasty Warriors 2/3, particularly when you realize that no matter how hard you drop his lifebar unless you keep at him constantly and run the risk of getting slaughtered by one of his attacks, his lifebar will return to full the moment you stop. That and all the other guys you have to kill through to stay focused on him doesn't help things, neither does being level 1 either.
I WOULD agree with Ben Singer, except that if you were like me and saw no need for other pokemon besides for the HM's, and had a level 80-90 starter pokemon at the end because you used pretty much nothing else, then you will have no trouble and beat the elite four and Douchebag Mc'Fartface with a level 13 krabby(streangth surf and cut), a level 4 pidgey,(fly) and a level 87 Charizard, lol.
the only trouble I had was with Rivals Blastoise, which pidgey was willing to die while I revived Charizard
no i have to agree the great mighty poo is the best boss ever conkers bad fur day is one of my favorit games of all time and that serryestly was awesome the alean at the end of the game was just anoying
@mitzibishi sounds like a pain in the ass, but what kind of games are these you're talking about. I've never had to wait THAT long for a game to start working. I mostly play SNES and N64. I'm a fan of NES but haven't played more than maybe 10 games for it.
The final fight with ganon in a link to the past it timeless and in my opinion link to the past is the best out of the zelda games it my just be because it was the first one i played after beating it i was hook to zelda for life but there just something so epic about that last fight you hit him the first time then the platform starts to collapse o no dont fall off you will have to start over and that final blow man it was just so rewarding for me.
@rockman002 a lot of things can be considered retro after all of these new school games man, who gives a fuck if you were around when they first made Atari games and we weren't, that doesn't make you better than anyone else on this page. I was raised on Super Nintendo and I consider it retro, I don't care what anyone else thinks on the topic.
@Boognish89 this is retro, when your system didnt load games after waiting for 10 minutes for them to load from a fucking cassette tape. now thats retro. 10 minutes to load a game and it didnt work!
My favorite boss fight of all time was in Star Fox Adventures when you fight General Scales. Oh, I just remembered..... YOU DON'T FIGHT HIM!!!! he just falls over like superman with kryptonite.
I'm gonna go cry in my room for three days because of rockman002's comment TT.TT .......wait a sec. Why should I care that he is pretty much insulting me over the fact that I was born after him. There is no real need to get hostile over this. I guess if being the "veteran gamer" means that much to him we can let him have it. Right?
The Doomsday Zone from Sonic & Knuckles, flying through space as Super Sonic, avoiding asteroids and hoping you have enough rings to keep your super form to take out Eggman/Egg Robo.
All of you fucking little nooblets...If the N64 is retro to you, like it is to these fags, then you're all bitch ass rookies when it comes to gaming. Talk to me after some of the first ATARI games! Loser rookie gamers. Stick to your COD and Halo where you have unlimited lives/ammo/etc and go running to the internet whenever you get stuck. Plus, if your using to word "epic" to decribe everything, you're an idiot as well as a rookie bitch.
I would say, the boss fight from the very beginning of god of war 2 is my favorite, you have to fight a giant robot statue. boss fights where you have to fight something as big as a skyscraper- or bigger are my favorite. sadly, the rest of GOW2 didn't live up to being as good as this fight in my opinion
Best RETO boss in my personal opinion would be Jenova from FFVII, it's the sheer PRESENCE of power she has though the game. Evey time you come across her and her "son" you have just enough power to thwart the current incarnation but a twist of fate they manage to slip through your grasp again and again. It's a driving point of the story and a great evolution of power and evil that keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more.
Then the climax, where Sephiroth joins her for the climax.
hmm....Lord Vanaduke from Spiral Knights. I haven't really played a very wide variety of games, but vana is a really well designed boss fight. The best boss fights test your skill to just before the point of overwhelming, unless you have done it hundreds of times before, and also give you hints on what you're meant to do next without making it extremely obvious. Also, Andross from starfox 64. good times.
Riot Warship the very first boss from MSX game called Nemesis 2 (or the lost Gradius 2 series) It was awesome experience when I First encountered and when I managed to beat it old back in (1989) I was 5 back then
FinalHazard SA2. Nothing more rewarding then playing through one of the greatest games ever and beating the sh!t out of a giant mutated lizard attached to a space station that is plummeting towards earth...
Best ever? Bowser Junior from Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island. At first you think that it's only a baby, but wait until Kamek comes.... and you will have a BIG baby all of a sudden, with rage. :D
From the Sonic franchise, I liked the last battle in Sonic 3 and Knuckles on the Doomsday level. :D That's just simply epic when you fought with Eggman previously, but still, you have to chase him before it's too late (because of the rings).
I just beat Cave Story not too long ago and for me, the best ever boss was the Island Core mainly due to the awesome music that played when I first fought it. The Ballos fight was also challenging if the Sacred Grounds didn't kill you on the way to him.
Ya know im readin all these excellent selections for the best retro boss, but i think the dragonlord from the very first dragon warrior (Dragon quest in japan) was the best, i mean he offered you a position in his mighty army before he obliterated you... and you were given the choice whether you actually wanted to join him or not, not many games bother to give you that kind of choice to join your worst enemy...
XD Great vid! Anyway my favorite boss fight was proabably Sigma from X1. At first i went in to beat his ass, and the freaking cat thing killed me! And when you finally beat him, sigma goes badass on you! And we all know what happens next. Great memories. But if you want to be a wuss just get the haduken.
I can't choose. I love both Sonic 3 & Knuckles' Mecha Sonic and from Megaman X Sigma. But I agree. The Great Mighty Poo was indeed a great boss. XD I don't if I can call it to be a retro boss, but I loved the battle against the Dahaka in PoP: Warrior Within too.
the original Prince Of Persia!! after so many tries I was so annoyed... then realize that the shadow Prince is actually your mirror reflection and all you have to do is to hide your weapon... SO DAMN SATISFYING!!!
You've just barely stumbled through the elite 4. half your Pokemon are fainted and the other half have no moves left. And who's waiting for you? GARY MOTHERFUCKING OAK.
The Great Mighty Poo is indeed a magnificent boss, but my personal favorite comes from the Genesis classic "Rocket Knight Adventures". Which boss from that game? ANY boss from that game. They all are awesome. Do I have to choose? Okay, I'll go with PigStar (the last boss), because not only it's epic, that darn thing follows you in a second round! Awesome.
I always loved the end boss of Crash Bandicoot 3, where the two masks are fighting whilst you and Cortex are also fighting. For some reason i found it so epic as a child.
It'll have to be Lavos from Chrono Trigger. At the time, me and my big brother always had hard time defeating the final bosses in Square games (Exdeath in FF4, Kefka in FF6, etc) while my big brother did manage to beat FF6 and FF4, he never manage to defeat Lavos without cheating. One day, in the morning, he still sleeping and I'm at the last phase of Lavos with my party of Magus, Marle and Lucas, spamming Dark Eternal when finally, I beat him. I yell in joy and woke the fuck out of my brother.
I would perhaps would want to make a game where every boss had a musical number, and as they sang they would slightly give away clues of how you defeat them but in a way that it is not as easy to point out.
The Great Mighty Poo gives someone like me allot of inspiration to try and come up with my own game with boss fights that have musical numbers.
oh gosh, if anyone's ever fought Seymore from FFX. Not the first time you fight him, but every other time after that. FFX might not be a "retro" game, but this b**** was rediculous AND he can kill you in 2 hits if you don't use a walkthrough.
second fight, he can paralyze you and I remember it was use soft, attack. Use soft, attack. Use s- he killed me.
Prinny Can I really be the hero. When you fight Ainise, Kim and Chi... ALL AT ONCE!!
Ainise spams her magic and these giant beams while Kim and Chi follow you around trying to chop you up. You have to consentrate on destorying either Kim or Chi and you'll have to do it fast or if they're low on life, they'll go into a rage mode, move faster and hit harder, all while you're trying to dodge this onslught of spammy projectiles at every corner of the friggin' screen. Most fun boss in the game.
for me the best boss ever is queen zeal in chrono trigger. You endured the black omen and come to the end. Only to fight two bosses in a row without a chance to recover. and then you fight queen zeal's last form... ontop of the black omen as you look down on earth. It's just so epic and a hard boss fight if you don't get the best equipment and level grind.
You can see the three consecutive boss fights here
I would have to say akuma I mean just when he enters he beats the shit out of bison In one go then you had to fight him and if you made one mistake it caused almost 65% of damage and you had to fight him twice. Now that shit is scary.
Hell yeah, the Elite 4. Just like he said, my first time, I didn't know I had to fight them in a row! Died.... Came back with lots of potions and revives. Beat the Elite 4, Yayyyy.... Wait.... RIVAL?! Ah.... As for best retro boss ever, c'mon... King K Rool. He's pretty hard until you learn to stand in the middle
One of my all time favorite retro boss fights would have to be Ridley from the Metroid series. He's a giant pterodactyl. Scratch that... A giant space pirate pterodactyl.
i would have to say gyorg from majora's mask because even after u hit him he has a breif chance of attacking u and taking nearly all your hearts, or dark link from ocarina of time, it took me nearly 4 days to beat that dude and even now i still have a hard time killing that bastard
Best retro boss has to be King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country 2 Diddy Kong's Quest. The fight has some excellent music and, nothing is worse than getting hit by one of those blue smoke puffs from King K. Rool's musket, (which slows Diddy/Dixie down) only to have him slowly glide into you.
Mine was mario he is epic so bascially when y get to bowser on mario 64 i was really scared faceing himso i tired many different things on him and id only had one gab his f***ing tail was hard going around him but then when i did it the tried it the frist time it worked i keep on gabbing his and i won!!!!
I came into the gaming world latter than most people born in the early 90's. The game that made me wanna be more than just the casual gamer was the first God of War. I honestly had no idea that games could take me on an emotional and incredibly epic journey to lead me to what will probably be my all time most satisfying moment ever of playing a game. The epic 3 part boss battle with Aeries truly made me feel as though I had killed a god.
personally me and ym brother would have to say andariel from "diablo 2"
because when we first played it we spent so long getting there and figuring everything out and when we finally got to her we freaked out at just how effin powerful and BIG she was, and to me that boss battle set the bar for the epicness that was going to happen later in the game.

Anime7266 1 month ago
my favourite was either beating ganondorf in legend of zelda Oot or in pokemon silver / gold when you battled red on top of mt silver :)

Heres a rare one for you.. I always loved the Rez battle in the original (and best) Gex game for 3D0 ( and later PS1)

the original Prince Of Persia!! after so many tries I was so annoyed... then realize that the shadow Prince is actually your mirror reflection and all you have to do is to hide your weapon...

Most fun boss in the game.

my favorite boss is volvagia from orcarnia of time cause i like dragon and a good game of wack-a-mole
ichigowhosamonkey1 1 month ago
for me the best boss ever is queen zeal in chrono trigger.

Ganon in Ocarina.
