Dr Mike is already a lot more independent and strong-willed than most women of the time period and now she wants to help pay for the house that Sully had his heart set on building FOR HER. We all have insecurities and Sully was no exception.
Not that I agree with him.. I mean he knows that she makes a decent living on her own and to expect her not to use any of that money for the family when it's what she's always done isn't reasonable. But I can understand his feelings. Good to see both sides.

@FGP02 It's a pretty common film/tv plot. Men have historically been the 'providers' and there seems to be this almost subconscious thing where if the woman seems to be doing any of the 'providing' it makes the man feel almost like he's being accused of not doing his job well enough. That hurts.
I've seen my dad beat himself up inside at times, not for anything like this episode, but when he felt like he wasn't providing well. Not something to shrug off- but of course it has to be balanced. ;)

Good idea,....except....unless you can "find" the gold today to take back in time you'd only get about $15 for the $300 worth at today's prices. Think of it this way, my wedding ring 6 years ago was $60. To buy my husband the same ring today is $350. And that's 14k white gold. But good idea, I thought the same thing....Maybe silver....
back then if men weren't the breadwinners then they felt like less than a man. there's no reason Sully and Dr. Mike couldnt both be breadwinners, a dollar went far in those days
I think Sully scouts things. Like when that guy that takes photos came down, & Sully showed him around. He takes ppl out in2 the wild as a guid i guess. & he also trades. Like with Robert E. He mixed w/e it was 4 Sully, & Sully gave him something to do with a moose
Actually the Bible DOES say that a man is supposed to provide for the family, and that he is then supposed to give 100% of the money he makes to his wife for her to spend it wisely.
using say 1877 for point. the window is 150.00=2,595,00 cost today using simple consumer index..hope they enjoyed it P
