I was just in the Tri-cities area for a wedding. I talked to my uncle who works at one of the modern nuclear reactors. I walked along the Columbia river and got my feet in it. It would be very unfortunate if this mess is allowed to spoil such a vital waterway and most of Washington in the process.
As you can see, nuclear power is so complicated that they can't keep track of even the big details. Just like France's good nuclear waste policy is killing their champagne, I guess Washington's great Columbia Valley Wines will be spoiled by the Hanford Nuclear disaster.

First of all the nuclear waste is from Hanford Site. There were 9 breeder reactors there to produce plutonium from uranium. Eight of the plutonium production reactors at Hanford dumped a daily average of 50,000 curies of radioactive material into the Columbia. Additionally, the water table is also contaminated with more waste.
Nuclear power is probably one of the most complicated ways to boil water. Unfortunately it will take 12,500 generations before this mess is really cleaned up.
The Hanford Site History does explain why. I guess they did not care about the environment. Perhaps "National Security" was more important. They should have known all about radiation sickness from Madame Curie, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.

Wrong. There were ONE "breeder"reactor at Hanford, the FFTF -The Fast Flux TEST Facility- and it was only a TEST reactor.
