@MarioSavioTZM Actually, the 2010 World Giving Index reported the USA tied with Switzerland to rank 5th in charitable giving behind Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland. USA also ranked 8th in "wellbeing" - a significant factor in determining how charitable a nation is. Google "World Giving Index 2010" to find the study.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, even knowing these kids couldn't be as precocious and worldly as they seemed to be. Thanks for making me smile!
Poor kids, told they couldn't have a toy for christmas because their nut ball parents told them they'd be less human. lol "Hey kids, you get to be political footballs this year!" YAYY!
Considering, that Christ wasnt even born on the 25th, and if he was, we celebrate his birthday with a man in a red suit name santa claus, and buy each other things we do not need, what an extreme weird race, the human race is.
Well there are Americans that don't celebrate Christmas with uberconsumption and everything, just check out the Amish community, they usually get a new pair of work boots and a day off of farm work. Everything is hand made, food comes from their livestock. So are they greedy?
We're too scared to look at the obvious problems that we blind it behind a veil of "I gave to my charity for today."
If people really cared, they would stop blinding themselves to the cold, hard truth and START blinding themselves to the notion that giving is something which comes in limited supply just like everything else. That mentality is a disease.
Christmas IS capitalism. We wrap our presents in paper that is only good for a few days before it's torn off again. This wastes money and trees. Ironic fact: Department stores claim to care about the environment by selling reuseable shopping bags as well. But not many people want to waste money on those. This country is run by paper, plastic, and metal.
funny fact: americans are the most giving compared to any other european countries, yet we have more at poverty than any of the other european countries. how ironic huh?
@mylilmei Sorry but this is a myth. Sweden gives more. The US is something like 19th or 20th if you calculate it as a percent of Gross domestic income. If I have 100 carrots and give 10, and I more generous than the guy who has only 40 and gives 8? No.
the more money u spend on a gift the better person u are. Sadly other countries including where I live have started doing the same. Just to make clear I dont hate america (actually like it) I hate the fact that u are getting mentally set up by the people who rule the usa, and that's making materialism and consumerism 2 new words part of your idiosincracy.
Oh Come on! all of us know that America's Ignorance startet by building a selfcenterd materialist empire wich only cares about producing in order to be superior than others. Americans set up this awful example of giving just to feel good about yourself and not to make the other happier. It simpler than it sounds:
a self centered materialistic empire? First, the U.S. is not an empire, so you should check your definition on that. Second, you cant say that people are not self centered and materialistic by nature. Its not how America is, its how people are. Also, America's ignorance is not one of indifference, but of well being. Because we are so well off, we may not understand the struggle you accuse us to be ignorant of, but we are aware of it. Christmas is very material, but by no means greedy

Teaching kids that Capitalism is the problem is wrong. Capitalism is the solution. Leveraging the profit motive to provide education and opportunity to the impoverished is the greatest gift of all. Business incentives to plant these seeds is all it takes to grow prosperity.
Jinja, you are right. Materialism is the problem, it's like the plumage of a colorful bird. It grabs the attention of the opposite sex and ranks you as an alpha male or female. All in all, U.S.A. survives as long as there is capitalism.
Africa Growth and Opportunity Act is the greatest benefit Americans have given Africans. It is not "giving" but "giving opportunities" for Africans to sell into the US. Business creation is sustainable development. Buying African made goods for a "rich" American creates jobs in Africa! Buying something for the person that has "everything" creates wealth for those with "nothing". Nice vid (polemics aside) - teaching my kids to be generous with poor here in Africa. Cheers from sunny Africa!

What's the bet that if I asked these kids what capitalism is and who Paulo Freire is, I'd get nothing but a blank look?
jiffy2001 4 years ago
You're exactly right. I made it for a grad school project and the Freire part was a joke. Never intended it to hit youtube...ha.
