Saw the movie last night. It was cold, cerebral, nihilistic, unforgiving, and lacking in humanity (except for two small boys who didn't have the wonderment of life snuffed from their core yet). The film and most of its characters seemed to celebrate being harsh and unrelenting to each other. Anything else was looked upon as weakness. This isn't a matter of "American Vs. German Cinema." That's an old and overwrought argument. But I would have loved more nuance in this film.
I was blown away by this movie. The more i think about it the more i realize new things. God, the cast is AMAZING. I thought i was transported back to 18/19th century. They were like real ancient people. What an experience!
@totaldynamix I saw it too. But don't you think that rural America was much the same at the turn of the 20th century??? There aren't such disproportionate realities between any of the Western Industrialized nations...agriculturalists, industrialists, pastors/doctors/landowners/teachers were positions of respect and the church and it's values were pretty much the culture that held the communities in tact.
Pretty cool how they do it roll call style over in Cannes. It's such a contrived situation and the setup over there embraces it. The music fit so well with the clip as well.

@totaldynamix Is it a good thing if the film makes you feel transported back to the 18/19th century when it is actually set in 1913? :)
