However, nothing can reach the emotional climax that Trent Reznor put into his own creation because he used the music as well as his voice to get there. The Cash & Lewis versions seem to rely on their voices to get them through the song. In this case the original can never be touched.

This is good but Johnny Cash definitely did it better in my OPINION, and I believe this is due to the fact that Johnny Cash was a lot older and had many many more life experiences. He was singing from the deepest depths of his soul, while she is singing from her heart. Everyone needs to remember both are GREAT songs in their own respect, it all comes down to personal preference as to which version YOU like.
I’ve been a cutter, a user, a drinker. I saw my best friend commit, I’ve tried myself. I’m a metalhead, found NIN in ‘91, seen him in concert (only) twice. I grew up listening to Johnny Cash, my dad is so much like him it’s scary, his version of Hurt is nothing short of brilliant, one of my favourite songs.
With all that being said, I love this cover. Regardless of her past compared to theirs, vocally she does it justice. Is it as powerful as the man in black’s though? For me, not a chance.

Great tune, one of my all time fav's, I especially liked the Johnny Cash's version too, and this gal has done a good job with it. Yes, it is true that the original cannot be matched, especially live.. but if versions like this lead people to such a great band like NIN when they would not ordinarily do so then great. Hopefully Gary Barlow performing a Billy Joel track will lead kids to hear his great music too... and hopefully shake off some of that boy band stigma he holds round his neck.
I like this song.I like Leona. She's got an incredible voice, and I mean that in the sense of the original latin, -from credo, I believe- it is unbelievable.
However, not sure this is the best combo. The choruses are great, and the soaring effect is kind of like what Peter Gabriel did to My Body is a Cage. However, the verses quietened her voice too much, and the wierd piano arrangement didn't help.

I've never commented on a video before, but I have to say this. She sang this beautifully, there's no arguing that. But when you hear Cash's version, there's so much pain that the song comes alive in a way that is indescribable. I love Leona, and she is an amazing singer, but this is not the song for her.

It completes the narrative of the anti- -pop , anti-commercial artist and fan standing firm in a world of cheap,cheesy cookie-cutter nonsense. Great tune, one of my all time fav's, I especially liked the Johnny Cash's version too, and this gal has done a good job with it. Yes, it is true that the original cannot be matched, especially live.. but if versions like this lead people to such a great band like NIN when they would not ordinarily do so then great. Hopefully Gary Barlow performing a Billy Joel track will lead kids to hear his great music too... and hopefully shake off some of that boy band stigma he holds round his neck.

I like this song.I like Leona. She's got an incredible voice, and I mean that in the sense of the original latin, -from credo, I believe- it is unbelievable.
However, not sure this is the best combo. The choruses are great, and the soaring effect is kind of like what Peter Gabriel did to My Body is a Cage. However, the verses quietened her voice too much, and the wierd piano arrangement didn't help.
Hate her if you want- she has talent, and brings her best to what she's given. I love her!

she tries too much..when she won xfactor..and after that with bleeding love.it was like..this girl can sing...singin is like talkin for her..but now..watchd her live performance to "colide" 2..didnt impresse me.however chorus is amazing..but the other parts..are not that good..i observed that she lost some voice in the last couple of years..

I've never commented on a video before, but I have to say this. She sang this beautifully, there's no arguing that. But when you hear Cash's version, there's so much pain that the song comes alive in a way that is indescribable. I love Leona, and she is an amazing singer, but this is not the song for her.

I'll tell you why so much hate: dark, heavy music such as this song, is from a culture in which the music is a profound aspect . It completes the narrative of the anti- -pop , anti-commercial artist and fan standing firm in a world of cheap,cheesy cookie-cutter nonsense. So to have one of the cookie-cutter performers do it on a stage that celebrates all that we despise is just damn insulting... hence the hate.

The song is hugely emotive, Johnny Cash sang it about his own struggles with addiction and his faith and Trent wrote and sang it in his darkest days.
It's like Girls Aloud covering "Gimme Shelter" or "Helter Skelter"..I guess you need to go look those up though.
