Also, they knew some rock singers who were gay, and they didn't see any harm in trying it out. This is from memory, so excuse me if I'm wrong ^_^

Elton John was HUGE, and there were other people then too, in Joan's days, and he came out. So kids were like, hey let's try it. There wasn't any networking, internet, or even major texting, hangouts, etc. where you could listen to 40 other kids saying what's ok, so groups of 5 everywhere started trying stuff.
