After some reading, I believe he personally gave the order for ALL the Romanovs to be executed, so that there would be no existing Romanovs left, so that the "great revolution" could continue, without any Romanovs upon which the populus could fall back in the future...but look at what the Russian people had to endure for the next 70 years or so.
