@atvogel Thanks, I did that in 08' most of it has faded away, I didn't seal it But all the etching is still there. Havent figured out just how to re-stain it aside from staining each individual part or restaining and re-etching thw whole thing again.
Never a surprise the wife seems to always duck out when ever a project is due. At least its not just mine that bails on me whenever there is work to be done, looks like yours did to. Thumbs up if you have to hunt down the wife to help ya!
Thanks for the video, really great work. Did you consider fixing the cracks in the concrete before doing the job? Not sure how to do that myself or if it is easy to do. Here is a tip for your next project if you want some great detail, use an overhead projector, you can print out any design from your computer and put it on some transparency paper and project the design and then outline. I use this technique when painting desings on the walls (great for a kids room). Thanks for all the info!
@moofushu I just came up with it in my head and went at it... After I was done I found a lot of stuff on the internet about it and even found special etching tools for this process but they are EXPENSIVE! and DO NOT CONTACT any of the companies asking anything about their products because they will spam you for years!
What type of Diamond blade did you use ? And what type of Grinder is it a varbile speed .. also what other prep work was done to drive way .. very impressive work.. are in the dallas fort worth area...
@LuckyFellow327 The blade is just a concrete grinding wheel 1/4" wide. I was using a simple Ryobi grinder I purchased just for that job. Still using it to this day.
Only prep work was washing it down with a scrub brush, figuring out where and what I wanted and drawing it with chalkboard chalk. A tile workers sponge is an amazing eraser. Use long METAL straight edges for lines! I did a lot of this one freehand and it shows.
pretty sweet bro! I was trying to gain information about it, because I am going to do my garage, and workshop. I think aside from the instructional crap type videos out there, this one has given me the confidence to get creative, and not be afraid. You did an awesome job! i will have to post a vid of mine when i'm done!
@sircrazydave I'm looking forward to your video. Are you going to do a logo or anything on your garage floor? Just draw it with chalk, stain it then cut it with the grinder on the chalk lines (A 1/4" concrete grinding blade will hide a lot of imperfections in the drawing) you can paint up to the chalk line in your drawing and then just cut along the two colors or more!
That star logo looks like it could be in front of some government office -- just a pity the cracks in the concrete "busts" the illuision of individually laid bricks a bit...
LOL, I think it would be a bit far for ya...I'm in Northern Michigan...plus, we get a lot of snow, which gets plowed, which = concrete staining probably wouldn't last that long :D
At 3:26 you can see where I stopped the crack repairs just above the "TEXAS" letter. It looked ugly nd it won't hold stain the same way the old concrete would.
Do you think I did an 11ft Dia. Texas Star and about 200 ft of feaux bricks "Free Hand"?
I spent more time on preparation than it took me to actually do the entire project.
Almost the entire thing is on video and it took 5 two hour tapes Most of the video is me drawing on the concrete and measuring out my designs and a lot of the repitition and prep work is not even on the tapes.
the work is nice and time consuming, the prep im talking about is the cracked concrete, its like putting 4000$ paint job on a classic without taking out the DENTS! very talented and skilled
OK I see what you meant... It's not in the video but just above the star and at the top of my walkway I did repair the cracks but it looked worse than just leaving the cracks and staining across them.
I figured, leave the cracks and let it look like the star cracked after I did it.
I also considered resurfacing the driveway but my neighbor had that done 2 years ago andhis drivet has already ceacked again in all the same places.
your work is amazing i do this kind of work and i learned alot of things from your vid ,like using a brick to trace, with this vid youv inspired 718 people,.patching the concrete can discolor the ground true,a good idea is to patch it with flexible cement or rubber cauck then paint the hole thing concrete color grey, with paint, then work your magic that you do so well, your very motivated 1 mans show with the company of his good ol dog,you rock!
There are a lot of other tricks I came up with while doing this.
At first I did my long straight lines free hand. but later on I layed down a piece of angle iron 3x3 and ran the grinder along the tapred edge like an upside down "V" it didn't interfere with the grinder nut like a wood 1"x4" board did. didn't wear down as easily either.
Im going to make some patterns (stencils) out of plywood and use an air needler (Welders tool) in the holes.
I was also thinking of making a large Plywood stencil of different radius curves and use it like I would with an airbrush but using the needler instead.
"ARTOOL" makes small stencils for airbrushing. I was thinking of making one about 3' long
You're a Superman, what a tremendous amount of detailed work.

Its definetely alot of work! But its tottaly worth it! Awsome job man!

What cutting attachment did you use on the Dremel to make the detail cuts??
evertcg 4 months ago
@evertcg I don't recall, it was just a small grinding bit.... just experiment with diff bits in a noncospicuous place.

Also learned to use white chalk instead of black charcoal like I did in the begining (Charcoal darkened my stain). chalk lasted longer too.
Also... If you make a line mistake...re-stain it and re-grind it the right way.
