Harsh review. Anyways yeah they suck live no one can deny that, but the album has some really good tracks on it and the beats are really intriguing. My favorite tracks are King Night, Release Da Boar, Trapdoor, Redlights and my favorite track on the album Killer. For anyone who's hasn't heard their music I would recommend download Killer and Trapdoor.
i love yet dislike the album, i either love to hate this album or hate to love this album, i always jam to "tair" but the snare of "king night" and "redlights" kind of annoy me, and the whole "ambiant female vocals" get old fast but its unlike anything i heard and i recommend anyone to give it a listen.
Salem is definitely not for everyone, so I totally don't blame anyone for not being into it. I, however, love it. I love the raw sound and the tortured vibes. It's raw and open, cracked and smashed music. It's not about sounding "good", it's about being felt. I wouldn't show Salem to someone who likes popular music. I show it to those I think will understand things like the song and video for withoutu. But you should really listen to Salem's Finna before you die. Just so you know. Peace.
I can't believe so many people are behind this album. It's nothing really amazing, or really original. It's not BAD, to me, its just not good. I listen to it on occasion, but only can manage a few songs. It really is just an attempt at dirty south mixed with some dark electro.
Review Cleric - Regressions! Just give it a chance! I bet you'll enjoy it! Just listen to the album in it's entirety once!! You [probably] won't regret it!! (And yes, I'm personally visiting each of your videos!! THIS IS IMPORTANT, DAMNIT!!)
he overlooked the diversity on this album. all the tracks sound different, yet maintain the same formula that makes the whole thing work. he also overlooked the fact that it is intentionally supposed to sound gritty and dirty, not some cheap bedroom recording. how many albums can you name that have a chorale on one track, and gritty southern rap on the next?
It is a pretty good album. I picked it up on LP on barns and noble the other day. the tacky aspect to the album brings it back to the early 90's. the witch house delorean. idk witch house is pretty neat. white ring is better than salem. just my silly opinion.
i really enjoyed this lp, and actually, this was the video that got me into salem and witch house in general. just goes to show that a negative review isn't necessarily bad for the band.
This dude seems like a douche, and I really like this Salem stuff. They're not good musicians, but it doesn't matter. It's like the ghosts of a Harmony Korrine film did a bunch of meth and robitussin and made an album. I kinda like this weird, lo-fi, trashy, cracked-out vibe. It's refreshingly meta-nihilistic.
@louisunderwood dude, i'm sure i'm just as fond of salem as you are, but if i were you i'd seriously drop the critical angle...i'm not attacking you btw. meth + tussin don't go together, , adding meta to nihilistic equals nonsense, and "characters from Gummo" is maybe what you meant vs. ghosts of actual film(s). just use reference and language of which you have a command total and precise, otherwise shit looks kinda beat/awkward, feel me? just saying...peace
@DougglesMagnificent I respectfully disagree. I'm very much in control of the language I'm using and meant to say exactly what I said as I said it. Thank you.
You are such an uneducated pig! Your metaphors and comparisons are meaningless populist drivel. Anthony Fantano is a shining example of how the internet and open source intelligence can potentially fail a generation, widen the gap of experiential knowledge and permit one to wear their lifestyle like identity skin, without any bond of interior depth. Make an honest living and pick up a broom you philistine.
Yes! Fever Ray! You said it. They must have been a big influence to Salem. If anyone should get the credit for this sound it should be Fever ray . And Fever ray is NOT tacky! Watch their videoes!
I personally love all salem's releases. I think this guy just isn't into it, not his taste, and thats fine. But, I think the review could have been more articulate and he could have given better reasons than it is tacky and whatnot. I pretty much agree with every observation that he made about it but I would give it a 7 or 8. now why is that? theres just no accounting for taste
Im IN the dirty south, and to be honest this may be overhype. The style he is trying to figure out is chop n skrew, but these kids dont got it.. Maybe instead of a tabletop drum machine they could use a quantitization on those drums
You review good albums...but i dislike how you review them so much that i feel compelled to pass comment even though i feel like a jerk for doing so. Thats how much room for improvement you have.
that band is really cool if you take it as a group of junkies making what pleases them in their garage, low-fi rap/goth/house/whatever music or awful wallpapers and clips on their website. This album is not a great step for music History, of course, but I really like it precisely for what also may make you hate it : they just don't care, they don't even pretend, they don't rule, they make it like teens making their own horror film mixing whatever they find cool, just for fun. And it's quite fun.
bahaha this guy fantano is an idiot. really knows nothing about music he cant review an album without connecting the sounds of one artist to anothers.
@binarydivision a recent development! oh wow do tell! ah i'm just joshing but in due time i guarantee the unintentionally catastrophic hilarity of this here comment of yours will simply blow your mind. too perfect!
I've got to agree. I was introduced to witch house by a friend and got really into oOoOO and White Ring. After initially hearing about them, I heard the tunes Skullcrush and Redlights, which I thought were excellent. Picked up the album and it's very disappointing. The juxtaposition of dirty south w/ the gothy shoegazing sound is awkward, to say the least. It seems that anything on the "Blogpshere" as you call it, that you didn't find first, automatically drops about 4 notchs with you, like when you reviewed The xx track Crystalized, you spoke as if you were above them. You need to not express your nerdy fits over the internet just because of the fact that something might have been trendy before you found it. It's a great album. And your a dork. I do still love your reviews though. <3.
No disrespect to the very insightful Anthony Fantano, but this is absolutely one of the best albums I've ever heard in my life. If you do not understand the sheer genius behind these 11 tracks, you have no place critiquing it.
@ceverettsmith So true. I kinda stopped taking Anthony seriously when he was acting cool by knowing that Merriweather had a song in 7/8 even though it's 9/8... And comparing this to Brokencyde was really painful.
@ceverettsmith I totally agree. Music hasn't hit me like this in a long time. Hard to articulate the raw emotional response I have from listening to their music. There's a sweetness and an innocence at the core shrouded by the darkness of the world and those two things fighting against each other ... hell, I don't know. There must be some of that going on. They're the perfect mix of genres for me. not for everyone, but for me.
At at first I was like "wtf is this crap", too. But now I enjoy the great ambiance this album has. Sure, it's a lil bit cheesy with all that "ritvalism" and there's definitely a need of being "obscure" and "dark". But all in alll, they are great melodies and many catchy moments on the album. But Cal's beatbox skillz are awesome anyways ;)
You could be wasting your time. Why not make music instead of talking about music other people have made? What will you have to show when your 98? These videos?
god people can't take a review. good for you Anthony for stating what you think.
and for everyone who doesn't like that he rated it a 2 well then too bad. he's not gonna like the same music you like.
personally i don't like the album much either. and i gave it a try i really did, i listened to the whole album, front to back and i agree with Anthony's score. but that's just me.
it´s an ok album that gets pretty boring after a few listens ... and yeah he is right about the whole thing just sounding pretty cheap and redundant ...
I think the fact that you gave SALEM a 2 proves to me that you’re a piece of shit reviewer. Along with a handful of other singers/bands/musicians, Salem is a fresh take on the concept of the modernization of music. They present an alternative to the dark appetites of visual aesthetic and sound. The sound is diverse incorporating the rough urban sound of screwed with the hyper pitch of Juke
@CrossandCoven it's a review man. get over yourself. he was stating his thoughts on the album. don't like it then make a review yourself stating on why the album is great and all.
i didn't agree with his review on Yeasayer's "Odd Blood" but that's his opinion and i respect it. remember: everyone has different musical tastes. we're not all gonna like the same thing.
He opened up a can of woop ass when he rated them a 2. Fuck this dude, you're too old already for this shit. I've never even heard Neil Young. No imagination or open-mindedness. SALEM is AMAZING. Oh and btw oOoOO is pronounced "oh".
King Knight is terrific and this asshole doesn't know shit, just stupid ass hipster Pitchfork buzzing bands.
Some of you guys kill me. It's music....I love all sorts just like some of you. If you don't think a person't comments are correct or negative....so the fuck what? YOU like it...and that's all that matters.
wow you are the worst fucking reviewer ever, i hope you get hit by a fucking truck you dorkus know-nothing motherfucker. find a new hobby, like fucking yourself.
I gotta say I'm surprised by this score. It seemed like something you'd dig,but I can get the criticism of the rhymes and shit. But to be honest,i kind of like how ridiculous is though I wouldn't call it tacky. I'd give it like a 7 or maybe even a light 8.
Then again I'm a big fan of DJ.Screw so I love really deep bassy slow rap like this.
Fuck this guy king Knight's a masterpiece.

This album is garbage. Don't particularly care of oOoOoO either. But Dead Virgin is a rather impressive witch house band.

god people can't take a review. good for you Anthony for stating what you think.
and for everyone who doesn't like that he rated it a 2 well then too bad. he's not gonna like the same music you like.
personally i don't like the album much either. and i gave it a try i really did, i listened to the whole album, front to back and i agree with Anthony's score. but that's just me.

it´s an ok album that gets pretty boring after a few listens ... and yeah he is right about the whole thing just sounding pretty cheap and redundant ...

@UsefulChamber If you hate him, don't watch his videos. Unsubscribe him and never visit his channel again. It's very simple really.

SALEM > Witch House

@CrossandCoven it's a review man. get over yourself. he was stating his thoughts on the album. don't like it then make a review yourself stating on why the album is great and all.
i didn't agree with his review on Yeasayer's "Odd Blood" but that's his opinion and i respect it. remember: everyone has different musical tastes. we're not all gonna like the same thing.

This is seriously the best album of 2010

I liked the album, but that doesn't mean I'm going to get pissed and blast him for fating it. Its a review, chill out and shut up.

@richievik "First of all it's not pronounced as 'sail-em', it's pronounced as 'sa-lame'." If so, a very fitting description of the band.
