not all horse auctions are like this. i have sold many horses at an auction (well, i rode them at the auction for the owners) and none of them were like any of these. I have bought one of my horses at an auction, and i got him fairly cheap and he turned out to be a smashing barrel-racer. so not all horseauctions are like these.
a lot of people think the slaughter buyers are keeping horses from getting good homes. The truth is they will not pay much money at all for a horse. If you can't afford to outbid a killbuyer you probably can't afford to take proper care of a horse.
If I can afford another horse - the one I'm getting I'm adopting (its been rahbilitated at a rescue center) Well I will, buy one at auction, not to ride, but as a compainion(:

I believe that every horse deserves a chance and that they are only unwanted because someone didn't have the patience or willingness to train them properly. NO horse deserves to be sent out to become meat because they were miss understood!

I bought my horse, Taka-kun from one of these auctions. He was supposed to be a racehorse but wasn't fast enough. He was thin and terrified, but I raised him back to health. But recently somthing happened to ruin it all...he was torn apart both mentally and physically...but i cant help but cry to think that this could have happened, even though soemthing equally as bad just might...
I have purchased many fine horses from auctions and sold some as well- there is nothing wrong with taking your horse to a sale- everyone knows the meat buyers- and if you dont want to sell your horse to someone- you just say NO SALE- of course you have to pay a fee to get your horse back- I like to go to auctions to find horses with potential- just like the video- most horses are there because they are old, young, or they have inexperienced owners- who may think the horse is dangerous-

Years ago I went to a horse fair in North Yorks England. Despite the required presence of an inadequate spineless RSPCA inspector who walked the other way each time there was an issue of cruelty (including the time we ranted at him to do something)... It was pure EVIL!!
And nothing, nothing can prepare you for the sight of the horses in the slaughtermens known keeping pens.
Irresponsible idiots are allowed to own and breed horses, so the vicious cycle of cruelty goes on and animals suffer.

ok...i bought my first horse from an auction in schipsewanna indiana...he was imaciated and i got him healthy agian. my uncle saves the horses that are headed to the slaughter house by buying them getting them healthy and selling them agian. most people sell them at acutions because they just cant affort to feed them anymore. but i do agree that alot are just too difficult to look at...its heartbreaking
my barn just got a BEAUTIFUL black and white paint geldling, shy and scared, green and barely broke, but we have high hopes for him, we got him from a meat auction. how people can do this i will never understand. unfortunatly a horse i used to know got sent there and didnt walk out with a loving owner.. it makes me sick how selfish that woman could be, when the old owner would take him back if she couldnt pay for him. Yeah...long story, but I sold my beloved horse to a lady who wanted him for her kids. They called me months later & said I sold them a 'bad horse'. I went to check on him. They had starved him, beaten,no water, tried to trim his feet & screwed it up, etc. so when I told her I'd buy him back, their home wasn't fit for an animal, she said she was going to sell him to slaughter to 'get even' with me - I guess because I told her she was abusing the horse. So yeah, he ended up at slaughter. Sick ppl!
You should have contacted animal control and/or local law enforcement. They would have removed the horse from that woman and either returned it to you or adopted it out to a better home...
That's so sad. Sorry to hear that. :-( If someone did that to me they would certainely not hear the last from me. I'd make sure I got my own back on them for sure.
It makes me sick to know that a horses have to go thought this. Every horses that goes through there could have lived on a farm were kids with phycological and physical problems come and ride and they get better they learn to love, trust, and be responsible but their might be one less person the gets that help because they horse that they would have used was killed to end up on some persons dinner plate.

at 1:08 those are PMU mares, pharmaceutical industry trows them away after they finish exploiting them. We need to petition to stop PMU farms because bio-identical alternatives have been available 4 yrs, so stop breeding unwanted foals just to enslave draft mares?
my whole family and most of my friends are tacking millions of dollars to a horse auction were bring 4 20 horse trailers 3 18 horse and 3 6 horse 45 2 horse trailers and like 7,5 horse trailers were going to save horses
my 2 geldings were at the auctions....they were the best ones there and sold for 900 together, now they live a happier life in a bigger better pasture with lost more happy horses
if anyone wants 2 give me a horse to love and care for since throuought my life, i only had 1 dog named mister 4 under 1000 dollars, please oh please do so.
most of these pictures there is nothing wrong with the horse but alot more of these pictures the owners should be treated that way so they can feel the way the way these animals do

WOW! Our auctions are nothing like that here. I love going to the auctions here. The horses go in, get ridden round a lap (or led), feet picked up, all that stuff then they do the auction. If no one wants your horse you take it hime, train it some more and go back in a few weeks to try again. (or else you keep it or do a private sale). And we dont have that many horses at auctions.
The slaughter ones have to weight 125kg de-boned :(

Auctions arenot like that here! In the horse auctions in our town, the horses have their own stalls with hay to eat, and sometimes there are maybe 4 or 5 horses in a stall but the stalls are big and the horses have room. And in the part where they show the horses to get bidded on, the owners lead them around or else they just let the horses walk around while people bidon them, and the stalls are clean and some have fresh shavings in them, think all auctions should be like ours, humane and safe!
We have 2 Belgiam owned slaughter houses in Aus.where these poor horses meet a terrible fate. This is why I have 10 of these horses in my back yard. Too many idiots breeding plus the horse racing industry waste means not enough homes for all the horses. The only way to stop this is to regulate the breeding of horses.

thisis where i got my horse who hurt herself really badly no one wanted her so my mom sudenly bidded 53500 for her and we WON HER!! she is such a good horse she wasent in bad condition but she was really hurt and she couldent be ridden for 1 year she had to get better first

My aunt and I see the same things at many autions. At one we both actually bought 2 horses. I bought a yearling filly that was dehydrated about 100 lbs underweight and scared of everything. My aunt bought a 10 y/o mare that looked as if she would die at any moment. We both bought them for about $20. We did everything you could do for them. My aunt's mare died after about 3 years, my filly is better but she will never be rideable, after the damage had been done there was nothing we could do.
I ride and I love horses, and don't get me wrong, this saddens me deeply.
But I can't justify the slaughter of cows, chickens pigs and lambs either, and how people can be ok with that but not with the slaughter of horses is beyond me. They all feel pain and emotion, they are all animals and they can all make good pets and companions.
it's sad to see this happen. but this is the result of overpopulation. ending horse slaughter doesn't solve the problem. don't get me wrong, i don't agree with slaughtering them, but what happens to them if you end slaughtering? the root of the problem is overbreeding. but people don't see the problem until the end result. good luck with your petition.

my poor shetland pony sally was sold at an auction, only to be bought by people who abused her for four years. i then got her and she now lives very happily with daily turnout (24/7) in the summer and during the day in the winter, comin in to nice warm rugs and a stable with carpet and a lampshade!
this is no way to treat an animal, auctions should be stopped.

This is sick. Its only going to get worse in this climate. Really, no animal, food or otherwise, should suffer like this. But as a horse person, horse slaughter makes me want to barf. The racing industry needs to be stopped, it is the MAIN culprit of producing surplus, crippled, crazy animals that nobody wants. MA banned dog racing last tuesday. States need to do the same for the horses.
It depends..many killer buyers are posing as a family at auctions taking kids along with them...so you never can be completely sure where these poor horses are going. but as 100,000 horses are slaughtered every year....it seems the killer buyers are getting most of them.

More people need to be aware that horse auctions are not ways to get rid of horses..most WILL end up at the slaughterhouses nowdays (economy). with the economy, the kill buyers is now able to purchase the horses for meat..he will out bid just about anyone there. Horses are going for $1 to $500 (at best)..Do not use auctionhouses to rid of your pet animals..not the best choice! Do your horse a favor, euthanize before auction is an option! Killbuyers even pose as family's nowdays to get their "meat" quota's...be smart!
Really, you need to look at the breeders of these horses. They are responsible for over-production, meaning that the price of horses is so low that the meat price is more than the riding horse price.
This is just the end - it's those people who can't resist breeding a sweet foal...that are the real horse killers.

Yes I support the people who do it the right way, but sadly some people think it's ok to treat animals like this. It's sick. when california outlawed horse slaughter a few decades ago, it was predicted that there would be a rise in unwanted horses and abuse of them. this claim, however, was false. (there was an article in HI a while back, I can cite it if you want the info :))

he is a bright chesnut gelding called rusty(he has a white r on his head)he is 10 and has just finished a year at college with me - he loves jumping and so do i, so we get on well together! through 6 years of having him i have only ever come off him once - he is a little star!

I've seen some beautiful horses go thru auctions, and have purchased more then a couple just to rehome after rehab, some didn't even need rehabing just a good home.
There is no more slaughter in the US but horses are still being shipped over the borders to Canada and Mexico and the sad truth is, there are still people who abuse their horses as well. I bought my 17 year old half arab from an action. He's the best, proof that every horse there can be loved.
it is soooo sad to have a horse to be killed i know i had to put my horse Grey to sleep because someone fed him rotten hay or he had a collic. ok...i bought my first horse from an auction in schipsewanna indiana...he was imaciated and i got him healthy agian. my uncle saves the horses that are headed to the slaughter house by buying them getting them healthy and selling them agian. most people sell them at acutions because they just cant affort to feed them anymore. but i do agree that alot are just too difficult to look at...its heartbreaking

Yeah...long story, but I sold my beloved horse to a lady who wanted him for her kids. They called me months later & said I sold them a 'bad horse'. I went to check on him. They had starved him, beaten,no water, tried to trim his feet & screwed it up, etc. so when I told her I'd buy him back, their home wasn't fit for an animal, she said she was going to sell him to slaughter to 'get even' with me - I guess because I told her she was abusing the horse. So yeah, he ended up at slaughter. Sick ppl!

WOW! Our auctions are nothing like that here. I love going to the auctions here. The horses go in, get ridden round a lap (or led), feet picked up, all that stuff then they do the auction. If no one wants your horse you take it hime, train it some more and go back in a few weeks to try again. (or else you keep it or do a private sale). And we dont have that many horses at auctions.
The slaughter ones have to weight 125kg de-boned :(
They also dont get to go to auction :(

Auctions arenot like that here! In the horse auctions in our town, the horses have their own stalls with hay to eat, and sometimes there are maybe 4 or 5 horses in a stall but the stalls are big and the horses have room. And in the part where they show the horses to get bidded on, the owners lead them around or else they just let the horses walk around while people bidon them, and the stalls are clean and some have fresh shavings in them, think all auctions should be like ours, humane and safe!

We have 2 Belgiam owned slaughter houses in Aus.where these poor horses meet a terrible fate. This is why I have 10 of these horses in my back yard. Too many idiots breeding plus the horse racing industry waste means not enough homes for all the horses. The only way to stop this is to regulate the breeding of horses.

My aunt and I see the same things at many autions. At one we both actually bought 2 horses. I bought a yearling filly that was dehydrated about 100 lbs underweight and scared of everything. My aunt bought a 10 y/o mare that looked as if she would die at any moment. We both bought them for about $20. We did everything you could do for them. My aunt's mare died after about 3 years, my filly is better but she will never be rideable, after the damage had been done there was nothing we could do.

But I can't justify the slaughter of cows, chickens pigs and lambs either, and how people can be ok with that but not with the slaughter of horses is beyond me. They all feel pain and emotion, they are all animals and they can all make good pets and companions.

my poor shetland pony sally was sold at an auction, only to be bought by people who abused her for four years. i then got her and she now lives very happily with daily turnout (24/7) in the summer and during the day in the winter, comin in to nice warm rugs and a stable with carpet and a lampshade!

The racing industry needs to be stopped, it is the MAIN culprit of producing surplus, crippled, crazy animals that nobody wants. MA banned dog racing last tuesday. with the economy, the kill buyers is now able to purchase the horses for meat..he will out bid just about anyone there. Horses are going for $1 to $500 (at best)..Do not use auctionhouses to rid of your pet animals..not the best choice! Do your horse a favor, euthanize before auction is an option! Killbuyers even pose as family's nowdays to get their "meat" quota's...be smart!

Really, you need to look at the breeders of these horses. They are responsible for over-production, meaning that the price of horses is so low that the meat price is more than the riding horse price.
This is just the end - it's those people who can't resist breeding a sweet foal...that are the real horse killers.

it is horrible why people do this shit!!!!!!people who do it should be killed the same they killed the animal or even worse animals if someone has the guts to look something in the eye and abuse it or kill it the are fucked up and should rott in hell.....it is a different story if the animal is suffering then it should be put to sleep peacefully PLEASE STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY

I've seen some beautiful horses go thru auctions, and have purchased more then a couple just to rehome after rehab, some didn't even need rehabing just a good home.

There is no more slaughter in the US but horses are still being shipped over the borders to Canada and Mexico and the sad truth is, there are still people who abuse their horses as well. I bought my 17 year old half arab from an action. He's the best, proof that every horse there can be loved.

it is soooo sad to have a horse to be killed i know i had to put my horse Grey to sleep because someone fed him rotten hay or he had a collic. But now i am going to get a baby horse named Butters he is 5 months now his birthday is March 8, 2008. Thanks for putting this video on youtube. SAVE THE HORSES STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY PLEASE!!!! I SIGNED UR PETITION!!! i belive no animal should be treated like this and has the right to a happy, long life. When im older im going to form the Abused or Neglected Animal Shelter for animals who have suffered like this. poor animals....*cry*
