I think this song would have got more appreciation had it not been on Pop. That album (rather unfairly) is kinda taboo with casual fans. It's a great song though, one of my favourites from U2. I like how depressed Bono sounds on the album.

Pop actually is an excellent and experimental album. However, it was said that it was not personally U2's favorite album. However, I think the music on it is very interesting. U2 music is dynamic. Hands down.
How could Pop have this song and be so underrated? I finally bought my copy years after the hoopla and gave it an honest listen. I think Pop is actually better than their last three albums.
This is a track/song that questions a man's faith within God or his ideal "greater good'; I believe in God but an internal God a "greater good" that's within every individual. Emotionally and psychologically I'm hanging on by a thread. I want to believe...I want to inspire and influence others and feel and be a human being. This song somewhat reflects off what I feel. It's my fix.
Didn't God send angels, signs, and wonders? Yet in our humanity we crucified Him. We all still do it today by shutting Him out even though He loves us more than we know. The best thing I ever did was give my life to Jesus...and that was during my last bong hit. He transcends all the crap but can show up there too. Jesus said "come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest." Sounds like you too may be tired of fighting against the wind. Peace to your soul brother.
If by God you mean an omnipotent creator with a moral conscience who cares about you persoanlly then that is patent nonsense. I suppose anything makes sense during a bong session - pity you didn't return to earth afterwards.
Dear G, There are many notable scientists, who would beg to differ about your view on God. Since that time, my life has turned 180 degrees around. I also have excelled in the scientific regimen. However, scientific empirical evidence is not more important than a multitude of credible eyewitness accounts from people who lived with Jesus, saw him crucified, and saw him raise again. Call it what you will, but at the end of the day Jesus still loves you and wants to reconcile you with God! :)
Dear M, these "notable scientists" are presumably creationsists who yearn to resolve the gabing abyss between the fact that we've evolves from bacteria in a swamp & the dream that we're still shimmering with honeydew from the fingers of God, having been dropped into Eden about 4 thousand years ago? Another thing: Christ wasn't God, he was a political revolutionary. And what eye witnesses have recorded it other than Longinus? If he was seen after death then he didn't die.
Example: Surely you wouldn't consider the Director of the Human Genome Project as anything other than notable?(He believes in God directed-evolution). As for evidence, the most credible witnesses are those who wanted nothing to do with Jesus after he was put to death (by professional executioners). What do you think made these people face beatings, imprisonments, and even death for telling people about Jesus if they knew he was dead, or if he was just some coward in hiding? All the best ~MIke
Well, if it merely sounds like I'm being cynically dismissive I would add that I was raised Roman Catholic & never discarded my faith lightly. To play the devil's advocate is healthy. However, I can't help but feel that in centuries to come people will regard all this with the same shocked incredulity as those who worshipped Odin or Zeus. People die for their various religions. People who talk with absolute conviction for or against God are equally reprehensible.
Dear G, Pls consider: Religious people where the ones who called for Jesus' death. There were a few who didn't want him to die, but most of Jesus' friends and followers where those who were unworthy by religious standards. To me, this speaks onto what you might have experienced. I believe that a "check of list" (i.e. doing rituals to seem or feel worthy), is eminently shallow compared to knowing Jesus personally as a friend and savior. Take care ~Mike...who the Son sets free is free indeed!

This album could very well be the best album for most other bands. Thats how great U2 is, they have made so much amazing music that expectations are so high. Anything less then Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby is a huge disappointed. Thats the price of being so great.
I'm always surprised how few people know this song. Even though I love Pop personally, I can understand some of the other songs not being so popular. But this sounds a very accessible song to me, I'm surprised it flopped so much. Then again Magnificent has also flopped off the new album.
Such a beautiful loving song. You don't have to believe in the Judeo-Christian God to enjoy this song! I happen to be a very open minded, Christian Buddhist, seeker person. I think there is truth and beauty in all religions, for the most part. Just so beautiful. We all need these angels to watch over us these days!
I still cant believe how people, even FANS say that POP is good,alright,ok.... POP is a masterpiece! This song is amazing,Please,Gone,Discothque,Staring at the sun,Mofo,Last Night on Earth,Do you feel loved, all amazing!
I believe that POP is an album where you split the people who have an ear for music and the people who dont.
Every now and then, a band will create a piece of music that will stand out from the rest of their work. Even if few fans identify with the work, it's still a great and meaningful piece of music. For me, this is that type of song: beautiful, heart-felt and meaningful. This song brings back great memories for me, and i'll never forget it.
Im a very religious person but that doesnt stop me from liking things like Harry Potter or the Joker or anything. I even hang out with some emo kids. just because you avoid bad things doesnt mean they arent there. I maintain my faith in GOD!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So which are you: greedy for heaven, or terrified of hell, or both? This is about as far as a religious person's reasoning goes. Seriously, it's just embarrassing for an adult to believe in fairy tales.
Y si dios enviara a sus angeles para salvar a este mundo en el que estamos? Deberiamos de poner un grano de arena porque cada uno de nosotros somos ese angel que dios necesita para mejorar nuestro maravilloso planeta!!!!!
more often than not it is, but I think that's peoples fault for twisting it and using it to impose their own social values onto others. Not even basic stuff like no sex before marriage, or respecting your parents, but everything. I mean I like u2s music, but apparently(according to people at churches i used to go to) it shouldn't be part of a proper christian lifestyle. And a billion other things.
I maintain my faith in God, but I set myself apart from the more cult like people.
TontoNo5 ~ YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Omniscience of All.. perceptions can be greatly altered to either fear, or love, or become...The Unobserved Observer. I Am That, I Am!
you guys seem a little confused on why jesus died you should read the bible when i started reading the holy bible it answered alot of my questions and made me fell closer to God and yes Jesus did have to die because He was the ultimate sacrafice and know him dying will give us the ultimate challenge of faith infinite sky you had a great question but if you read the bible it tells you the need for Jesus death
I'm looking to the comments below and I can't stop thinking that maybe that's what this song is all about: trying to make u ask yourself questions about God and salvation in this era of showbiz..
And,as it is apparent, it certainly succeeded! U2 is one of the deepest bands to have ever existed!
damn...i watched this when i was 13 :S and now im 23 :S ten years as you said i remember that i was depressed when i was a teenager and this song made me feel nostalgic...damn!!! :S
Nice, song, but theological nonsense. God himself, rather than just angels, came in person 2000 years ago, but the human race thought it a great idea to crucify him.
Sure, God knew it would happen, but he didn't predestine it to happen. If The Jews had not crucified the Messiah, and their leaders accepted him as such, He would have reigned the whole world in justice, mercy, peace, and plenty from Jerusalem.
Knew it would happen, and planned for it. Maybe not planned for it to be necessary(even if he knew it would be), but the whole point was to give everyone a chance at salvation. God could have saved Jesus/Jesus could have saved himself but he didn't.
Yes, but what God does is generally based on the freewill actions of man. In his foreknowledge, God knew what would happen, but didn't actually influence the events. Else how could he justly have put the Jews aside?
Freewill is at odds with the idea that god knows the future of man. If god knows exactly what we will do, then we are locked to that fate and have no free will. If we are truly free, then god doesn't know what we will do next, and therefore is not omniscient. Or, he knows all the possible outcomes of our various choices, just not the one we'll choose, which is somewhere in between.
u can say he knows what you gonna chose, like you're going back at time and knows what will happen though you dont affect the people to do so. got it?
No, if u tell me you are going to buy POP tomorrow, i have foreknowledge (albeit finite knowledge transmitted in a finite form) of what u plan to do. But has that in any way affected your decision? Because you have told me, does that obligate you to buy the album?
In a similar way, God know exactly what we will decide, but he hasn't in any affected our decisions in any way.
Because he is infinite, He can do this. But your argument depends of God exhibiting finite qualities.
Ah, you're saying that if we make decisions, god know what we intend. But then, things can change that are out of our control, and those decisions can come undone. Let's say I tell you I will go out tomorrow and buy POP. You know I will, and suspect I will, but I may change my mind. If I get hit by a car and die, do you know that? Does god? If he does, and I don't, then how is my future anything but set in stone? And if he knows ahead of time, why would I still die?
You have put forward a very good argument for foreknowledge being synonymous with predestination. However, this cannot be so if we are to sustain a reasonable Christian faith. If, according to your reasoning, God knew sin would enter the world before he lay the foundations of it, does this mean God forced Adam and Eve to Sin? And does this lead us to the conclusion Albert Einstein, who believed in the uniformity of natural causes in a CLOSED system, reached that God ultimately was the Devil.
Well that's the paradox, isn't it? God had to have known sin would enter the world, for he is all-knowing. God knew Adam and Eve would sin, for he is all-knowing. If he did not, because of free-will, then he is not all-knowing. Same applies for the Great Flood and all the babies who had never once sinned, and who died in that event. I won't touch on Einstein except to say that to god, the universe is a closed system. Einstein claimed god did not play at dice. How could he when he knew the roll?
What I'm am saying is this: theologically we can determine that, because God is infinite, he has properties we don't. That means he can know without predestining. He HAS to, or else he is an Evil God. This is something we have to accept through faith. Whether it is a paradox or not is immaterial.
Now to God, the universe in most certainly NOT a closed system. In a closed system, everything is co-dependent. A god who is dependent on his Creation is a god in name only.
What naturally extends from your statement is that because god is infinite, he not only has properties we don't, but he must have *all* properties, or else he is finite. That, ironically, must include evil. He cannot be all things and not be all things. He cannot be infinite and still lack qualities. He cannot know all things and yet not know what will happen because of free will.
God either sits within and is part of the 'system', or sits outside the system, or both. He *is* his creation.
MOreover, an ''infinite'' God is simply one who has qualities we don't. In the Bible, it says God CANNOT lie. So he is not infinite in the sense you talk of.
I never said that god was evil, just that if god is truly infinite, he must be all things. He is the superset of all that is, even if each component is just a small part.
He has qualities we don't have for sure, but he must also have all the qualities we DO have as well. We may be only a tiny subset of the all-encompassing god, but we're still part of his enormity.
Because we are finite, I can't comprehend how god can be all things, but I can accept it. God CAN lie, else he is limited, no?
God can't lie. God is limited. He is also personal, which MUST limit his infinity. And, yes, we are evil, but God does not have those qualities. We brought sin upon ourselves. God had nothing to do with it.
Wait, god is infinite, but limited? Omnipotent, but limited? Omniscient, but limited? Omnipresent, but limited? It cannot be. He is the creator, and created all that is.. there's nothing in heaven or earth that he did not create, and to create, he must have intimate knowledge of his creations. He created Satan, and knew how that would turn out. How could there exist such a thing as 'sin' to bring upon ourselves if god hadn't first created it?
Remember: you are finite, as you said, and can't know
Either we can believe we God created evil, or that he didn't.
We have to accept through faith the argument of freewill. Or else, God is the devil, so why bother listening to anything he says? Let's just do whatever the heck we like....
That's what happens when you get into paradoxes like we are. The traditional one being: can god create a rock so heavy that he can't lift it?
I'm not debating the fact that we as humans have the ability to make choices. However, the idea of god as an omniscient being means that all our final choices are already known.
Maybe god knows, but we certainly don't - thus our perception of free will. But if god already knows.. then why should he care?
I can only reiterate the fact we must accept through faith God's ability to be God without impinging on humanity's free will.
Otherwise, then we may as well fight God with all our strength.
It pretty much ends there. I believe they call this ''the ontological argument.'' And its been around for awhile. The only solution to it is one of faith.
Well... you feel you must, but that's not a given. God imparted us with more than just faith.. it would be silly to not exercise our god-given reasoning ability when dealing with the subject of our creator.
This isn't about god 'impinging', nor is it an ontological argument over his existence. My argument is that god doesn't need to interfere because he already have foreknowledge of 1) every possible choice and outcome and 2) which you will follow. So why impinge?
Well, then the argument's circular motion hinged on the notion that I *must* accept through faith that I cannot know the answer... well, that also contradicts my free will ;)
Arguments aren't meant to be won, they're meant, in my opinion, to bring out new knowledge and insight. I hate to see them dead-end. But at the same time, I suppose I was just asking foolish questions, which can only lead to foolish answers.
The quality of the philosophical argument that you are having with TontoNo5 reiterates another (simpler) fact: that U2 is a great band.Few forums related to other bands' songs could have elicited such a deep discussion topic.
I just rediscovered this truly spiritual song from U2--Very haunting and beautiful harmonies from one of the greatest rock bands ever!--Mikey (Faved & 50*Stars)
These guys are incredible, this song is how old and sounds like it was released yesterday!! Nobody else really like them in music..They are truly one of a kind!!! I love U2 and hope they continue to make music and tour for many years to come!!! Thanks Guys.
I think that Pop does have some flaws, but isn't as bad as it's made out to be. Staring at the Sun is U2 at its best. If God Will Send His Angels, Gone, Wake up Dead Man, and Please (Which is much improved as a single), are also quality songs. Discotheque isn't fantastic, but it's catchy and the video is a bit humorous. The rest of the songs are pretty good, but not what you'd expect from U2, but Do You feel loved and Mofo are the best of the remaining songs. In my opnion.
another beauty of a song...again i cant understand why this album was panned

I will forever be convinced that the average joe based their opinions on 3 things:
1 - the title of the album combined with the song title Discotheque. The words "Pop" and "Discotheque" made people think WTF?
2. The Discotheque video made people think WTF even more
3. Stupid ass critics who spread bullshit about the album being a dance record.
The huge majority of people wrote this album off without ever hearing it. Throw on Pop for any non U2 fan and they won't recognize any of it.

So which are you: greedy for heaven, or terrified of hell, or both? This is about as far as a religious person's reasoning goes. Seriously, it's just embarrassing for an adult to believe in fairy tales.

more often than not it is, but I think that's peoples fault for twisting it and using it to impose their own social values onto others.

Nice, song, but theological nonsense. God himself, rather than just angels, came in person 2000 years ago, but the human race thought it a great idea to crucify him.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
*sigh*
GITMachine 2 years ago
Um, maybe you don't remember but that was the point of Jesus coming to earth.
Jarsia 2 years ago
Sure, God knew it would happen, but he didn't predestine it to happen. If The Jews had not crucified the Messiah, and their leaders accepted him as such, He would have reigned the whole world in justice, mercy, peace, and plenty from Jerusalem.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Knew it would happen, and planned for it. Maybe not planned for it to be necessary(even if he knew it would be), but the whole point was to give everyone a chance at salvation. God could have saved Jesus/Jesus could have saved himself but he didn't.
Jarsia 2 years ago
Well, that's true, but if the Jews had accepted him, the Mystery would not have been introduced. The New Covenant would have operated instead.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Well, I can't say I know how God thinks, or what his plans are, but if that's what he wanted to happen, it would have happened.
Jarsia 2 years ago
Yes, but what God does is generally based on the freewill actions of man. In his foreknowledge, God knew what would happen, but didn't actually influence the events. Else how could he justly have put the Jews aside?
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Freewill is at odds with the idea that god knows the future of man. If god knows exactly what we will do, then we are locked to that fate and have no free will. If we are truly free, then god doesn't know what we will do next, and therefore is not omniscient. Or, he knows all the possible outcomes of our various choices, just not the one we'll choose, which is somewhere in between.
Either way.. favorite song of POP. lol
TontoNo5 2 years ago
u can say he knows what you gonna chose, like you're going back at time and knows what will happen though you dont affect the people to do so. got it?
violaheap 2 years ago
No, if u tell me you are going to buy POP tomorrow, i have foreknowledge (albeit finite knowledge transmitted in a finite form) of what u plan to do. But has that in any way affected your decision? Because you have told me, does that obligate you to buy the album?
In a similar way, God know exactly what we will decide, but he hasn't in any affected our decisions in any way.
Because he is infinite, He can do this. But your argument depends of God exhibiting finite qualities.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Ah, you're saying that if we make decisions, god know what we intend. But then, things can change that are out of our control, and those decisions can come undone. Let's say I tell you I will go out tomorrow and buy POP. You know I will, and suspect I will, but I may change my mind. If I get hit by a car and die, do you know that? Does god? If he does, and I don't, then how is my future anything but set in stone? And if he knows ahead of time, why would I still die?
TontoNo5 2 years ago
You have put forward a very good argument for foreknowledge being synonymous with predestination. However, this cannot be so if we are to sustain a reasonable Christian faith. If, according to your reasoning, God knew sin would enter the world before he lay the foundations of it, does this mean God forced Adam and Eve to Sin? And does this lead us to the conclusion Albert Einstein, who believed in the uniformity of natural causes in a CLOSED system, reached that God ultimately was the Devil.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Well that's the paradox, isn't it? God had to have known sin would enter the world, for he is all-knowing. God knew Adam and Eve would sin, for he is all-knowing. If he did not, because of free-will, then he is not all-knowing. Same applies for the Great Flood and all the babies who had never once sinned, and who died in that event. I won't touch on Einstein except to say that to god, the universe is a closed system. Einstein claimed god did not play at dice. How could he when he knew the roll?
TontoNo5 2 years ago
What I'm am saying is this: theologically we can determine that, because God is infinite, he has properties we don't. That means he can know without predestining. He HAS to, or else he is an Evil God. This is something we have to accept through faith. Whether it is a paradox or not is immaterial.
Now to God, the universe in most certainly NOT a closed system. In a closed system, everything is co-dependent. A god who is dependent on his Creation is a god in name only.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
What naturally extends from your statement is that because god is infinite, he not only has properties we don't, but he must have *all* properties, or else he is finite. That, ironically, must include evil. He cannot be all things and not be all things. He cannot be infinite and still lack qualities. He cannot know all things and yet not know what will happen because of free will.
God either sits within and is part of the 'system', or sits outside the system, or both. He *is* his creation.
TontoNo5 2 years ago
Because we are finite, we cannot comprehend some things. Its just to philosophical, hypothetical, and abstract for our finite minds to comprehend.
That is why we have to accept by faith what you have said isn't true.
I mean, how do u deal with the fact that god is evil?
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
MOreover, an ''infinite'' God is simply one who has qualities we don't. In the Bible, it says God CANNOT lie. So he is not infinite in the sense you talk of.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
I never said that god was evil, just that if god is truly infinite, he must be all things. He is the superset of all that is, even if each component is just a small part.
He has qualities we don't have for sure, but he must also have all the qualities we DO have as well. We may be only a tiny subset of the all-encompassing god, but we're still part of his enormity.
Because we are finite, I can't comprehend how god can be all things, but I can accept it. God CAN lie, else he is limited, no?
TontoNo5 2 years ago
God can't lie. God is limited. He is also personal, which MUST limit his infinity. And, yes, we are evil, but God does not have those qualities. We brought sin upon ourselves. God had nothing to do with it.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Wait, god is infinite, but limited? Omnipotent, but limited? Omniscient, but limited? Omnipresent, but limited? It cannot be. He is the creator, and created all that is.. there's nothing in heaven or earth that he did not create, and to create, he must have intimate knowledge of his creations. He created Satan, and knew how that would turn out. How could there exist such a thing as 'sin' to bring upon ourselves if god hadn't first created it?
Remember: you are finite, as you said, and can't know
TontoNo5 2 years ago
Well, you see how we are going around in circles.
Either we can believe we God created evil, or that he didn't.
We have to accept through faith the argument of freewill. Or else, God is the devil, so why bother listening to anything he says? Let's just do whatever the heck we like....
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
That's what happens when you get into paradoxes like we are. The traditional one being: can god create a rock so heavy that he can't lift it?
I'm not debating the fact that we as humans have the ability to make choices. However, the idea of god as an omniscient being means that all our final choices are already known.
Maybe god knows, but we certainly don't - thus our perception of free will. But if god already knows.. then why should he care?
Would he pick up if he could? We could use it.
TontoNo5 2 years ago
I can only reiterate the fact we must accept through faith God's ability to be God without impinging on humanity's free will.
Otherwise, then we may as well fight God with all our strength.
It pretty much ends there. I believe they call this ''the ontological argument.'' And its been around for awhile. The only solution to it is one of faith.
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Well... you feel you must, but that's not a given.
We still make the choices.
TontoNo5 2 years ago
It is about God impinging on us. What you are saying is that he did it in time rather than space. Same thing.
Yes, we do have logical minds. But the Bible tells us to ''Avoid foolish questions''.
It also talks of the''secret things of God.''
But, hey, we can go round in circles forever...nobody ever wins an argument when two people have diametrically opposed views.
:)
InfiniteSky49 2 years ago
Well, then the argument's circular motion hinged on the notion that I *must* accept through faith that I cannot know the answer... well, that also contradicts my free will ;)
Arguments aren't meant to be won, they're meant, in my opinion, to bring out new knowledge and insight. I hate to see them dead-end. But at the same time, I suppose I was just asking foolish questions, which can only lead to foolish answers.
Who determines which questions are foolish again?

I think that Pop does have some flaws, but isn't as bad as it's made out to be. Staring at the Sun is U2 at its best. If God Will Send His Angels, Gone, Wake up Dead Man, and Please (Which is much improved as a single), are also quality songs. Discotheque isn't fantastic, but it's catchy and the video is a bit humorous. The rest of the songs are pretty good, but not what you'd expect from U2, but Do You feel loved and Mofo are the best of the remaining songs. In my opnion.
