im so in love with this bitch, me and the girly are going to see them next week , i bet its going to be awesome, ill make sure to have a smoke and a drink.
i think shes brilliant - it is lazy and in some cases a tad sexist to say that shes a clone of bjork; i mean there are thousands of these 'critically acclaimed' bands who all sound the same but it never gets said
dont forget that they once said bob dylan was a rip off of woody guthrie
Add Sandy Denny and early Kate Rusby, especially a track like Sleep Alone, even early Grace Slick. Her voice evokes many influences, Julee Cruise, Liz Frazer (Cocteau Twins), Melanie Safka (Lovin Baby Girl) and Edith Frost. I think shes amazing. Oh forgot, also the singer from All About Eve. Moon and Moon, got to admit that is very Kate Bush, but theres nothing wrong with that, she admits that she likes Bush & Bjork. Keep it going Natasha and dont forget to play the next Electric Picnic.
Just not getting it. Sounds like she's copying Bjork's 'r' sounds because she certainly doesn't speak like that. There just doesn't seem to be much to this.
ugh i dont like her, she appears to be so great and wonderful, but when you listen to her music more and more, especially the new album or ep or whatever it is, its really not that great.
She sounds just like Celine Dion!! Especially the one sound about the boating accident and the heart going somewhere? It sounds just like that song!! I love Celine Dion!! Why does everyone have to constantly rip off Celine Dion for being unique! Can't they stop comparing themselves to Celine and let her be different!!

shes super talented, love the music, really AWFUL clothing style tho...i mean i get the whole "trying to be unique" thing...but it just seems like an overdone tacky look...bjork pulls off the wacky fashon thing, this girl should go for a simple, monotone color look.
feel free to notice that what she is wearing in this video a year an half ago is in style this summer. She's a trend starter and her clothes are wonderful. She is also a musician and the "simple, monotone color look" is probably boring and unappealing. It pays to be remembered, and boring looks won't do that.
Wow what a talented young artist. I wish they would give creative new artists like Bat for Lashes more air time on the radio and stop beating the death out of the same old songs.
yes, but then they'd start beating her songs to death. thats why i don't listen to the radio anymore. its killing me.
besides, it's kinda nice to have a band that no one knows about. Its like being in on a secret. you feel like you can relate to everyone in their fan base.
Shes nothing like Bjork she's doing her own thing, there's no need to always compare artists soon as anyone does anything different its like they aren't allowed to be unique they must be compared.
... i didnt even think that it was sexist... just goes to show you anyone who manages to point that out is a sexist themselves because theyre just looking to point something out that they think is based on gender when really nobody is thinking about that
When people say Bjork as an influence it doesn't necessarily mean vocally or a rip-off. They're just stating that at least a slight influence is there. Sinead O'Connor,Cat Power, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Bjork....yada yada yada. Either way she's influenced by SOMEBODY....perhaps all of these ladies rolled into one.
I've always thought it slightly sexist that whenever there's a new female artists, she is immediately compared to previous female artists and is assumed to be influenced by them. But I mgiht be over-reacting.
I definitely agree with this comment. Female artists aren't being taken seriously enough. The media is also more concerned about their personal lives and relationships in comparison to their talents. Both Bjork and Bat for Lashes are both spectacular and original artists in their own regards.
HAH! I totally know what she was saying about feeling like you're in music class with a bunch of instruments. Everyone always fought over the xylophone.
I think this is fantastic. I'm going to purchase the album. The most original sound / image I've seen in a long time. You should have won the Mercury Prize in my opinion.

'related to Genghis Khan' is a lot like saying 'I'm descended from King Arthur.' All the same, her music is fantastic, and she can produce this rather otherworldly quality sometimes (though not at others, oddly).
i hear the bjork influence in her voice on the last song performed in this video. but seriously. she fucking throws it back all the way to Nico in the 60's and it is rad!!
i dont think she sounds like bjork in the slightest, and i dont think its fair to say she does, bjork has a talent for music most people only get to dream of, and is one of the few artists on the planet with full artistic control. bat for lashes reminds me more of sonic youth mixed with Mama's & The Papa's..
i think people need to stop comparing and just be happy that there is cool music like this in the world.. or we could all listen to mainstream pop
The only similarity I can see between her and Bjork is that they are both female non-mainstream musicians, but "sonic youth mixed with Mama's & The Papa's", I like that....
What a rip off!!! I just read an article in Interview where she says that Bjork came to a concert of hers and told her that she will find her own voice someday!Obviously even Bjork can see that this chick is copying her sound and singing style. She is no better than a Bjork version of an Elvis impersonator! I am actually embarassed for this girl. Bat for Lashes needs to find her own voice and her own sound. She even sounds like Bjork when explaining her music. It's kinda creepy and sad.
There is even the possibility that someone accidentally sounded like someone else, just because they experienced similar things ... but i see you're point ... but i find the music of bat for lashes still better then most of the other stuff around at the moment

Naw, as a Bjork fan I can say that this girl sounds nothing like Bjork in style or feel.
Agreed. She sounds very different to Bjork and the Bjork tag is just muso journalists being lazy. She sounds closer to Cat Power than Bjork, but even then its hardly an accrate comparison.

If it fails to spark something in us, we are simply uninterested and thus deem it not to our taste. Bat for Lashes has clearly caused a spark within you and has therefore succeeded in producing thought provoking artistic expression. Regardless of other artisits that exist and perhaps seem on the surface to be similar, we should look at each artist as an individual.
That guy was being a twat...but I'm afraid I kinda agree. She's spent so much time thinking about crazy ways to record and cultivating an interesting image that she forgot to write good songs. The music just sounds like a collection of concepts and ideas with nothing behind it
I don't think you are qualified to tell me what is going on in my life. I have seen Bat for Lashes who in my opinion is enchanting live, I have seen Cat Power, Bjork, Tom Waits, Sufjan Stevens, Bob Dylan, 65 Days of Static, Squarepusher, Diplo, Jamie Lidell, Solomon Burke in the past few years in the polluted space you call London. They have all blown my mind. Freedom of speech ... as we were saying. You have had your say, you don't like Bat for Lashes. Fair enough.
This is some of the best music to come around in quite a long time...she comes from Kate Bush, Bjork, Roisin Murphy, Nicola Hitchcock, and the fierce ghetto bitches of Norway!
I can see the Cat Power comparisons, pine tree berry, but really...they're different planets.
No need for apologies your buying the shit. How can she come from all those people you mentioned above. Do you mean copying Kate Bush and Bjork. Its just not original and her sloaney accent is so annoying and uncool. Boring imature crap....
What like London pollution. You need to get out there and get serious about your musical taste. Travel a bit. See more live bands. This band is doing absolutely nothing new or interesting. Its really desperate.
I don't think you are qualified to tell me what is going on in my life. Sloany accent? Would you prefer her to put on a fake one? You make huge assumptions about her background. That's how she talks. Who cares? The fact that you question her as an artist based on her accent is ridiculous. Uncool? You are clearly very pretentious. Although by the sounds of your comments, you might take that as a compliment. Cool is not something you can be on purpose. The whole definition of the word rests on being admired without trying.
Sounds like a cosmetic company. Very silly desperate band. Another upper class snobby sounding air head. Jesus whats happening to music. Bland mindless and empty for words. This girl should get into another profession like knitting or graphic design.
Your comments are utterly stupid and unfounded. You sound like some jealous ugly frumpy person who needs to get out more and get a life. She is miles better than Cat Power, unless you are boring and out of touch like you. touch

First of all Ive had to turn the sound off as this shit is so annoying to hear. Its not a boxing match. Its just my opinion. Freedom of Speach you know! Ta...
Cat Power are much better. This girl is trying desperately to copy Chan Marshall. A bit to stupid to inspire any talent or anything deep to say. She looks like a failed model. Very silly girlie costumes. This just isnt music. Its CRAP....

What like London pollution. You need to get out there and get serious about your musical taste. Travel a bit. See more live bands. This band is doing absolutely nothing new or interesting. Its really desperate.

I don't think you are qualified to tell me what is going on in my life.

She is miles better than Cat Power, unless you are boring and out of touch like you. touch

Cat Power are much better. This girl is trying desperately to copy Chan Marshall. A bit to stupid to inspire any talent or anything deep to say. She looks like a failed model. Very silly girlie costumes. This just isnt music. Its CRAP....
