IMO i think the acrobatics make her more badass and she was still some what independent she went to all the locations by herself and i don't think they were calling the older games "utter rot" as in they were bad games but as in they didn't happen and to say the old games were "utter rot" is a little bit too harsh, but who knows. To me the newer games are awesome and so are the originals
I prefer Core's Lara any day. She's the one I grew up loving. Also, why change the entire biography? I think it's pointless. It's like all three Laras are three different people.
I prsonally always prefered the fist 5 classic Tomb Raiders over the newer ones. I thought the Crystal dinamic ones are ok but not as fun for me. I always wondered why when Crystal Dynamics took over they changed back story. Like how in the start of TR4 it's supposed to be like her first adventure when she was 16, then in TR7 it has the whole plane crash part instead when she was 9. By the looks of the new game coming out it looks like they're doing it again with changing her fist adventure.
I like the Tomb Raider Core games alot, but i think that the CD games are much better and the why they have changed the Bio. is fine by me, I kinda lost the interrest in Tomb Raider after game 4, And TB angel of darkness was a disaster! When TB legend came out it began to love TB again, and i loved the new Lara, and the new store! :D Toby Gard helped making Legend, and i think it is the best TB game in the series! :D Cant wait for the new Tomb Raider! Good thing that CD tok over :D
@Auvbri i see what u mean i conpletly agree with u I think changing her bio wasnt a big deal at all all i miss is the harder chanleges in the old ones
@bbb40025 Agree ! :D I must say that Crystal Dinamics is doing a great job, and they made me want to play tomb raider again! :D I also agree with you that there need to be some more challenges, and they need to be harder! But i think after the CD takeover, Tomb Raider became great again!
If you look at the first bar graph that is showed you will see that if cd didnt take over lara croft tomb raider wouldnt even be around most likly because of each game they were making it looks like its getting smaller and smaller and when trl came out it went up somewhat got more sells then it went down but then back up so..... If you ask me the new lara is 100% better then the old: For one lara was always hard to control really bad graphics and even in the cut scenes her mouth never even moved. I also think the new tr games all have better stories to it and the story's to me make the the games fun
I love the new Lara. I guess it's because Im young, and I never really experienced all of Lara. But I think Crystal's newest model is the best yet. I've waited SO long for it, and still have alot longer to wait...

I have always been disappointed in Crystal's representation of Lara. They took her from a hard core, independent Tomb Raider, into your casual treasure hunter with crew and all. I think that it was a major downfall in the series, and if the classics are such "utter rot" to Crystal, they should look at there own game(s). i.e. Legend... But anyway... Lara is not a gymnast. I think we all could've gone without her "acrobatic" skills in Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld. Core 4Ever
@xBigxJxProductionsx Gotta agree with you here. Her new moves didn't bother me SO much but I think they spent their time on all the wrong things. I guess she feels too "Hollywood" with her crew like you mentioned.
@MovieMakers100 Crystal owned the franchise after CORE handed it to them, so technically they could've done whatever they wanted with Tomb Raider. I don't think it would have been called thievery. And "a bit" is an understatement. Do you know that moment in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, at the beginning, where the new actress for Edie says, "I think I'm an entirely different person completely,"(or something like that) - that applies to Lara as well! The old is way different than the new
@Marluxia150 Makes me wonder how they actually acquired it...did their previous games warrant them getting TR? I don't know, I hadn't ever heard of them.
I belive the key points of Lara never changed. She's still strong, independent women, sexy, and a huge icon for the action/adventure games. That's what matters. Although it would be nice to have a single and solid biography of Lara. But I belive not knowing her past is what makes Tomb Raider so intriguing (among other aspects, of course)
@joaocarlos19882312 That's a good point! Not knowing much about Lara's past was always intriguing - especially back then when games like Tomb Raider made players use their imaginations to explain why things were the way they were in-game. I think at this point in the game industry though, players are looking a lot more for a good, complex, emotional story. Games (like the new one called Rage) suffer greatly in reviews from critics who don't find good, moving stories. So I give Crystal props...
@Marluxia150 ...for bringing more depth into the franchise's story. Did I necessarily like it? No. (Again in CORE Lara voice.) I think while trying to make Tomb Raider more realistic, the story wasn't that great, but they tried. ;)
@joaocarlos19882312 Just for the sake of adding fuel to the fire.... :D You say she's still independent? What about her whole "daddy can you come pick me up at the bar" ordeal in her bio? Does that have any influence on whether she's still independent? And (for fun), what about having Zip at her beck and call while she's exploring? Is she really alone then?
@KatieFlemingTR Well She was only 9 years old when she suffered the plane crash. It's quite normal that she wanted to call her dad. As she grows up, she obviously gets more mature and independent. I belive zip and alister are only there to check things that Lara can't check. When she is in adventure Zip and Alister just give her a hand to manage stuff. She goes in her adventure by her own. Thank you katie for making this so interesting.
@joaocarlos19882312 Valid point with the age :) Back to Zip/Alistair....think about this one: Would the ending of the Last Revelation have been as powerful if Zip and Alistair were on the end of a headset? Thanks for all of your replies :)
@KatieFlemingTR Wow, good point! Come to think of it, I can't imagine hearing them in any CORE ending. In Legend, at the end, Lara just shut them off so she could do what needed doing, but they were still there, you know? CORE Lara knew all of the history and had to work the gadgets, but now she needs specialists? Seriously? I can understand Zip in Tomb Raider Chronicles, because she was trying to infiltrate a high-tech building. Having eyes on the inside is only natural, but Lara could...
@Marluxia150 It just eliminates that feeling of solitude and solving the puzzles on your own. If you know you have backup if you need it, that distinguishes the adventurous feeling completely, imo! I thought the way they incorporated Zip into Chronicles was perfect. It was just the right amount, and it was fun having him! It's all in the execution :) I agree with the "moral support" comment - you're bang on. A little too much hand-holding for my liking! ;)
@KatieFlemingTR You're totally right about the perfect balance of Zip in Chronicles. He didn't baby Lara like Alister and Zip do in Crystal's games. Zip in Chronicles just helped out when he was really needed. Lara did all the exploring, puzzle-solving, etc. You're so right!
This brings about another question. Do you think games are too easy on players nowadays? The inclusion of Zip and Alister in the new games kind of eliminated from the overall feel of solo-exploration, as you've stated...
@KatieFlemingTR ...in CORE Tomb Raiders, we didn't have that help. We, the player, had to discover things all on our own! Zip and Alister weren't there to tell us where all the Secrets were, or tell us how many gears we needed to find, or that we probably shouldn't touch Midas' hand, etc. And you're right, it detracted from that Tomb Raider feel, but Crystal, IMO, isn't the only company to carry gamers through games. In Assassin's Creed, *detailed* mission objectives pop up on screen and tell...
@KatieFlemingTR ...what to do to complete our assignments; I know there were moments in Batman: Arkham Asylum where you're told exactly how to maneuver around a combat situation, etc. etc. So my question: do you think developers are getting too easy on gamers nowadays? Do you think their "hand-holding" takes away from the overall immersion in the game? (This could also mean linearity - as we all know Crystal's TR's are rather linear ;)
@KatieFlemingTR no... You're right.. She's not so independent as she was before with core design. But still, In crystal dynamics the storyline is more emoticion and quite complex, it brought a new emotinal/Ironic/Fearless Lara as we've never seen her before. So if I had to chose one of the companies for making new Tomb Raider games. i would chose CD because I belive the changes they're making is for a better Lara, a more "real" Lara Croft. A character that people can identify even more with :)
@KatieFlemingTR PS: In one hand Zip is like the gadget guy who knows everything about computers. On the other hand Alister is the historical expert who understands everything about ancient myths, relegion and structures. so I belive they're only there to give lara's support... and to know if she's dead or not xD
@Twilightwarrior95 Do you think there's going to be a new Winston in TR9? Personally, unless they're reviving old Winston, I don't want to see a new one, because there would be *another* biography redone. lol
@Ants202 I actually don't like the new Lara biography that much. I don't want to hear about Lara's mommy and daddy problems, to put it bluntly. When Lara is in a tomb, she should be worrying about traps, puzzles and freaking centaurs...not the sadness and grief of her childhood losses. It's called TOMB Raider, not EMOTION Raider. ;)
I guess if someone was new to the franchise it'd be okay, but for us Core fans, these new games just don't depict our Lara. They show someone really different IMO
@Marluxia150 Agreed, and nicely put haha. So it really wasn't necessary and if anything, probably hurt the series a bit. So far there seems to be only a small number of fans thinking a new bio WAS necessary.
@Marluxia150 well she wouldnt be in these tombs if it wasnt for her looking for her 'mommy & daddys' past. in tomb raider legend, she goes looking for who killed her mother.
@MovieMakers100 That's true in respect to the Crystal games, but the classic Tomb Raider - the definitive installments that formed and defined Lara Croft, made Lara someone who wasn't held back by her parents. In fact, if I'm correct, the CORE biography stated that Lara tried to get away from her parents' life of aristocracy and wealth.
@Marluxia150 thats true but Crystal had to completely rebuild her because CORE said that they didnt want to make another one after AoD becuase it was so bad, and thy worked so hard on it. And since CORE isnt in the name now, they cant use every single detail, (because i think that might be theivery or something like idek) so they used what they had from CORE, and changed it a bit
The only reason TR7 did as will as it did was because the game play was much better than TR6 other than that when I played the game I just went throw the motion the story wasn't interesting, and because there were so many characters and so much dialog that I didn't feel alone or scared of the environment and enemies in the game. As a side note tigers lions dinosaurs ancient mythical being, mythical creature make better enemies than just people with guns.
In terms of did they need to change it I seriously doubt it. I mean I can, to some respect understand why you would (get a better perspective of a character from your eyes opposed to someone elses) but for me it actually breaks the character (if that makes sense).
They could have left it and expanded on it, opposed to re-writing the entire thing. I'm not being horrible to either biography's just to point that out, ha.
I just want to add how thrilled I am with all of your comments! I am having so much fun reading through them. Thank you to everyone who is participating! Feel free to add as much as you like - I love all of the insight! Thumbs up if you want another debate in the future! :)
I really like the CD biography. Yeah, my first game was Legend, sue me. I'm playing some classics, still am, and those are great games, no doubt. But, regarding the bigraphy, CoreLara was like a Terminator, realised she isn't alive if she's not traveling alone. CoreLara was an icon, but she seemed unreachable, while CD Lara's still an icon, but has the feel that ordinary people can reach their dreams if they have the will... Youtube has a limit on comments, so i can't explain this thoroughly.
@DinoSlipKnot I get what you're saying and had to laugh at the terminator comment! :D Feel free to post again if you want to add any other comments - I'm interested to hear what else you have to say :)
Thanks so much for the nod Katie! I can't tell you how excited I was when you told me my suggested topic won. Really interesting to see what everyone thinks!
I think it wasn't necessary to change Lara's bio - especially considering both points you made on the details of her education & her survival in the Himalayas. I felt Crystal's Lara was a bit of a stock character, with her background being somewhat half-baked compared to Core's. But I'm sure I'm biased, having grown up with the classics :)
@Jianlibao My pleasure! It was an excellent idea and I am having so much fun reading through everyone's comments so far. Looks like I'll be doing more debates in the future!
Changing the biography changed Lara herself almost completely. When she lost her parents and fiancee in a plane crash it gave her a motive to become the cold, daring woman she was. When her mother 'died' through a portal, it lost believability and Lara wasn't so cold and unforgiving, more determined and reliant on finding her parents. I guess they babied her a bit. The Core biography was more interesting, that's why I prefer it :)
@BerryFlap You know, it's really funny you mention this. In the process of trying to make a more modern, believable game, they took away from its realism by sending Lara's mom tumbling through a portal. Plane crashes have occurred a lot in history. It's believable. But teleportation? Seriously? It was cool and all, but I think Core's bio kicks so much more butt!
It wasn't necessary to change so much. Everything CD added to it with all the parents story just felt so cliche. Step by step CD are turning Lara from a massive icon of video games to a non-discript generic hero'. Chiping away at her attitude, herritage, style, sexuality etc to create a less and less exciting character.
I think it is such a shame how little respect CD show to keeping continuity with the series roots after so much of what they have came from Core.
@Phasetastic I have to agree 100% with this - what's wrong with the old Lara? Why can't she be witty, fearless, and a daredevil? She doesn't have to be wimpy and emotional for an audience to connect with her. Seems damaging if there's already a fan base in place who loves who the character is already!
The question is if we thought it necessary to change Lara's biography with Crystal. I think "no" (imagine Core Lara saying that) and here is why, Crystal came into the Tomb Raider franchise with the goal of creating a next-generation Tomb Raider game. They did not want a "reboot", but rather to make the game more modern, and to put its own spin on the series. Since they were NOT making a reboot, the biography should have been the same between Core's...
@Marluxia150 ...version and Crystal Dynamics's version. The fact that they DID change the biography and Lara herself as a character makes it purely a reboot. This was one of the only factors about CD's decision to change her biography that I did not like because the concept behind the game was not consistent with their decision to not make a reboot, but rather put their own spin. So to surmise, I don't agree with them changing Lara's biography because Legend-Underworld was NOT supposed to be...
This is only part of my response, however. I didn't agree with what Crystal did, but I don't think they should have changed who she was. I think they should have retained the same Lara from Core's days. Crystal argues that Lara became irrelevant to the modern gamer, and I agree with that statement to a point. Around Chronicles, the industry of storytelling was moving forward, but Lara was not. But Angel of Darkness was the exception. I think at the very end, Core...
@Marluxia150 ...had made progress on the direction the franchise should go. AoD had a very compelling story. Lara felt more human. The game was more realistic. AoD proved that Lara wasn't "out of the game". Core finishing with such a fantastic game like AoD should have been, in my opinion, CD's opportunity to take Core's franchise in their aforementioned direction. What did we get instead? Legend. Don't get me wrong, Legend was a fun game, but Crystal changed who she was, without even stating...
@Marluxia150 ...that it was a reboot! At Core's end, Lara was finally moving forward in her character. After so many years of the classic Core games, AoD had set Tomb Raider in a good direction - consistent with Lara's old biography - but CD changed it up and put a dent in the franchise. The dent is labeled: INDIRECTLY-DUBBED REBOOT.
@Marluxia150 Agree, agree, agree! Thanks for posting. AOD was definitely more realistic, modern, and believable. She felt more like a human for sure. Had they continued with the AOD storyline they could have further modernized the game while keeping up with where the series had left off. I think that would have been the smart thing to do. Changing Lara so much/history/storyline, etc was almost an insult to the legend that Lara was.
@Marluxia150 Definitely agree with this comment as well (and LOL @ "NO!") - they could have easily modernized it without changing her bio. Look at the TRAE remake for example - modernized, and true to the original. No reason why they couldn't have created a new adventure for her while staying true to the originals.
I think Crystal Dynamics may have taken a wrong turn when they decided to oppose the series roots, but I suppose it worked out in the end! Although after all the dispute about changing her biography in TR7 I can't believe they've decided to do it again for the release of Tomb Raider in 2012! Not to mention another dramatic facelift!
@AddRaider Exactly - which is why I brought up having 3 different Lara's now. Makes me wonder how many are deciding not to continue with the series because they've had enough of the reboots. I know several fans who used to write who "quit" Tomb Raider. Change can be a very good thing but too often and you'll turn people away.
@KatieFlemingTR Yeah that's right, Crystal Dynamics are really not doing themselves any favours by changing things dramatically. I see so many people on the internet who go crazy for the Core games, but are not so bothered by the recent Crystal Dynamics games. If CD can capture the things we loved about the original games maybe Tomb Raider will regain that immense popularity it once had . Thank you so much for replying, you made my day :)
I may be the differing opinion here, but I don't see the Core/Crystal Dynamics bios as that big a deal. I love Lara and I think it was only a matter of time before conflicts in the bios emerged. Crystal did a new bio and in the terms of video games, it really hasn't changed much. A bio is just words on paper, Lara herself didn't change that much.
I would be more worried about the upcoming change. They are changing Lara in a far bigger way then just words on paper.
@KatieFlemingTR In many ways I say yes. But I really didn't fully plunge into the TR world until TR7. So perhaps my view is a bit obscured by that. Since I have now gone back versus those that started at TR1.
Also, I love Tomb Raider so much that in the grand scheme of things that I feel that these changes are minor versus canceling the franchise. Overall I think Crystal Dynamics has done a good job keeping the franchise alive while staying true to it. I see the bio as a minor change.
But when talking about Lara's bio, I think it sucks that Crystal Dynamics changed it. Why did they even do it? What was wrong
with the old story? It was more interesting. And I miss the witty, strong, smart and mysterious Lara. In the original background story there was also an explanation how she changed after the plane crash and why
she enjoys being alone. And I liked it more that way. So yeah this is what I think. Nice video, Katie!
@QueAwkwardNoises Its been 2 days since this went up! :P Shesh, people thinking I'm like a robot...... :D I'm working on it, but it won't be up for awhile yet ;)
I think it was necessary to create a new timeline for Lara, for the simple fact that she would seriously have been getting on a bit had Crystal's story been taken up after Core's. That said, I am sure most Lara fans prefer the original, although the market clearly required a change. I do not think that the Core/Keeley Hawes Lara besmirched Tomb Raider's legacy, but I do have concerns about an increasingly emotional / vulnerable Lara in Crystal's upcoming 'Tomb Raider'.
@imperialflagship But don't you think that Angel of Darkness was a step forward for the franchise? According to Katie's video, Angel of Darkness sold nearly twice as many copies as Chronicles. People liked it! And Legend might have shown a more emotional Lara, but AoD accomplished the same feat as well. I disagree that it was necessary to create a new bio for Lara.
@Marluxia150 On the downside, AOD was rated the worst game :S IMO I connected 100x better with Lara in AOD than I did Legend. In AOD there was a real threat and that was really the first time when she was extremely vulnerable. It also seemed more realistic, and true to the character as well. Thanks for commenting!
@imperialflagship What do you think of them keeping the old timeline but adding to it instead? Perhaps this debate will need to be looked at again when TR9 is released to compare yet another new bio!
Finally! Winston changed bloody dramatically in the games. I always wondered maybe she got a new guy that had the same name or something, infact he looks different in Underworld too. But maybe this time since there redoing the Tomb Raider series, they'll stick too the style, storyline, and whatever else. I mean it sad too think after all that work since the beginning all the way to getting thor's hammer and finally defeating Natla, it end's just like that! :/
@TwilightWarrior95 I *had* to include some comments about Winston - I have a serious beef with the "new" one. (Does anyone else think he had some work done?? Looks a little....plastic-surgery-ish)
@KatieFlemingTR I definitely agree with your Winston comment. What happened to him!? And where the heck is his silver tray? CORE Winston could probably take a bullet, but if you would shoot the new Winston, he'd probably go down as fast as Alister. ;)
@theshak06 I think I can speak for every Tomb Raider fan when I say we love Lara FOR being a tough, witty, determined, adventurous, doesn't-take-shit-from-anyone, daredevil.
@KCwellard That's interesting too, and I agree. I'm more interested in the adventure at hand and how she's going to make it to the end. Not if mommy and daddy are alive, and what they're doing!
Note that most of us, as kids playing never really knew that Lara had a bio to start with. We just loved her style and personality. So the little things in her past, excluding her parents' death and so on, aren't that significant. But it all depends on the story they want to tell.
But bio or no bio, once she's the same kick-ass, British adventurer Lara Croft, I have no qualms. :)
@kayzaac This is not true. I adored Lara as a kid and begged my friends who had internet connection to find out more about her. When I first saw her biography I was like 9 years old top.
Honestly, I'm rather neutral about the matter of the different biographies, but in my opinion, it wasn't absolutely necessary to change the ENTIRE biography. I understand that Crystal was trying to create a more realistic Lara with more personality, so some elements had to be changed. The story of Legend and Underworld also hinged on the bio so they needed to change it to that extent. The more trivial things like her education and such don't really have to be changed as they aren't so vital.
Well, I prefer Core's biography of Lara, not because it's the original but I like how Lara became Lara Croft. I think Crystal Dynamics took a lot things from the Tomb Raider movies, and I say this because of her father for example. In core games, her father is barely mencioned, and after TR movies came out (and Core leaves) Crystal took various elements from the movies. Her mansion is other example.
i like the whole tr9 young thing but i just wish theyd tought of it sooner! all the fanfiction and stories with zip etc is all pretty useless in terms of continuity now, and that can really annoy fans.
i like the whole tr9 young thing but i just wish theyd tought of it sooner! all the fanfiction and stories with zip etc is all pretty useless in terms of continuity now, and that can really annoy fans.
@AdamDawson3 no way core all the way! core had a nice biography for her then crystal destroyed it and now ever time I play tr I feel like it splits Into 2 different series when I play cores and crystals
Interesting debate Katie, and I hope it clarifies a few things. In my opinion, immersive gameplay, actually being in game, immersed in tombs, shipwrecks, monasteries, and caves, relying on your wits to survive, was Tomb Raider. Lara could have been blonde with no education and Tomb Raider 1 would still have been as popular as it was. It's all about immersive gameplay and being entertained. Eric got it right in Underworld. Pity they sacked him.
@HighlandPhotography yes the gameplay was immersive which was very key to 1's success but i disagree that her personality doesnt matter. Eveyone one loves her kick ass british thing and it definately added to sales. y else would crystal keep her nationality, haircolur, etc through 2 revamps after wiping almost everything else?
@JakMG62 Hi Jak, you're right, of course. What I meant was, if Lara was originally a blonde uneducated British streen urchin taken under Von Croy's wing and raised that way, by TR4 we would have loved her just as much. It was the gameplay that made the game, not the story :)
I prefer Crystal Dynamics new biography I think its better and more emotional compared with Core Design's biography and that she learn't all she knows from her Dad rather then Voy Croy even though he is very knowledgable and yay 1st to comment nice video Katie.

I belive the key points of Lara never changed. She's still strong, independent women, sexy, and a huge icon for the action/adventure games. That's what matters. Although it would be nice to have a single and solid biography of Lara. But I belive not knowing her past is what makes Tomb Raider so intriguing (among other aspects, of course)
joaocarlos19882312 4 months ago
@joaocarlos19882312 That's a good point! Not knowing much about Lara's past was always intriguing - especially back then when games like Tomb Raider made players use their imaginations to explain why things were the way they were in-game. I think at this point in the game industry though, players are looking a lot more for a good, complex, emotional story. Games (like the new one called Rage) suffer greatly in reviews from critics who don't find good, moving stories. So I give Crystal props...
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 ...for bringing more depth into the franchise's story. Did I necessarily like it? No. (Again in CORE Lara voice.) I think while trying to make Tomb Raider more realistic, the story wasn't that great, but they tried. ;)
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@joaocarlos19882312 Just for the sake of adding fuel to the fire.... :D You say she's still independent? What about her whole "daddy can you come pick me up at the bar" ordeal in her bio? Does that have any influence on whether she's still independent? And (for fun), what about having Zip at her beck and call while she's exploring? Is she really alone then?
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR Well She was only 9 years old when she suffered the plane crash. It's quite normal that she wanted to call her dad. As she grows up, she obviously gets more mature and independent. I belive zip and alister are only there to check things that Lara can't check. When she is in adventure Zip and Alister just give her a hand to manage stuff. She goes in her adventure by her own. Thank you katie for making this so interesting.
joaocarlos19882312 4 months ago
@joaocarlos19882312 Valid point with the age :) Back to Zip/Alistair....think about this one: Would the ending of the Last Revelation have been as powerful if Zip and Alistair were on the end of a headset? Thanks for all of your replies :)
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR Wow, good point! Come to think of it, I can't imagine hearing them in any CORE ending. In Legend, at the end, Lara just shut them off so she could do what needed doing, but they were still there, you know? CORE Lara knew all of the history and had to work the gadgets, but now she needs specialists? Seriously? I can understand Zip in Tomb Raider Chronicles, because she was trying to infiltrate a high-tech building. Having eyes on the inside is only natural, but Lara could...
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 handle herself back in those days. She didn't *need* them really. Zip and Alister seem only to be moral support in the Crystal games.
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 It just eliminates that feeling of solitude and solving the puzzles on your own. If you know you have backup if you need it, that distinguishes the adventurous feeling completely, imo! I thought the way they incorporated Zip into Chronicles was perfect. It was just the right amount, and it was fun having him! It's all in the execution :) I agree with the "moral support" comment - you're bang on. A little too much hand-holding for my liking! ;)
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR You're totally right about the perfect balance of Zip in Chronicles. He didn't baby Lara like Alister and Zip do in Crystal's games. Zip in Chronicles just helped out when he was really needed. Lara did all the exploring, puzzle-solving, etc. You're so right!
This brings about another question. Do you think games are too easy on players nowadays? The inclusion of Zip and Alister in the new games kind of eliminated from the overall feel of solo-exploration, as you've stated...
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR ...in CORE Tomb Raiders, we didn't have that help. We, the player, had to discover things all on our own! Zip and Alister weren't there to tell us where all the Secrets were, or tell us how many gears we needed to find, or that we probably shouldn't touch Midas' hand, etc. And you're right, it detracted from that Tomb Raider feel, but Crystal, IMO, isn't the only company to carry gamers through games. In Assassin's Creed, *detailed* mission objectives pop up on screen and tell...
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR ...what to do to complete our assignments; I know there were moments in Batman: Arkham Asylum where you're told exactly how to maneuver around a combat situation, etc. etc. So my question: do you think developers are getting too easy on gamers nowadays? Do you think their "hand-holding" takes away from the overall immersion in the game? (This could also mean linearity - as we all know Crystal's TR's are rather linear ;)
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR no... You're right.. She's not so independent as she was before with core design. But still, In crystal dynamics the storyline is more emoticion and quite complex, it brought a new emotinal/Ironic/Fearless Lara as we've never seen her before. So if I had to chose one of the companies for making new Tomb Raider games. i would chose CD because I belive the changes they're making is for a better Lara, a more "real" Lara Croft. A character that people can identify even more with :)
joaocarlos19882312 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR PS: In one hand Zip is like the gadget guy who knows everything about computers. On the other hand Alister is the historical expert who understands everything about ancient myths, relegion and structures. so I belive they're only there to give lara's support... and to know if she's dead or not xD
joaocarlos19882312 4 months ago
@MovieMakers100 ur wrong! She goes looking for adventure her whole life not just her mothers death
Rennaymyhair 4 months ago
@Twilightwarrior95 Do you think there's going to be a new Winston in TR9? Personally, unless they're reviving old Winston, I don't want to see a new one, because there would be *another* biography redone. lol
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Ants202 I actually don't like the new Lara biography that much. I don't want to hear about Lara's mommy and daddy problems, to put it bluntly. When Lara is in a tomb, she should be worrying about traps, puzzles and freaking centaurs...not the sadness and grief of her childhood losses. It's called TOMB Raider, not EMOTION Raider. ;)
I guess if someone was new to the franchise it'd be okay, but for us Core fans, these new games just don't depict our Lara. They show someone really different IMO
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 Agreed, and nicely put haha. So it really wasn't necessary and if anything, probably hurt the series a bit. So far there seems to be only a small number of fans thinking a new bio WAS necessary.
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago 2
@Marluxia150 well she wouldnt be in these tombs if it wasnt for her looking for her 'mommy & daddys' past. in tomb raider legend, she goes looking for who killed her mother.
MovieMakers100 4 months ago in playlist Videos from KatieFlemingTR
@MovieMakers100 That's true in respect to the Crystal games, but the classic Tomb Raider - the definitive installments that formed and defined Lara Croft, made Lara someone who wasn't held back by her parents. In fact, if I'm correct, the CORE biography stated that Lara tried to get away from her parents' life of aristocracy and wealth.
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 thats true but Crystal had to completely rebuild her because CORE said that they didnt want to make another one after AoD becuase it was so bad, and thy worked so hard on it. And since CORE isnt in the name now, they cant use every single detail, (because i think that might be theivery or something like idek) so they used what they had from CORE, and changed it a bit
MovieMakers100 4 months ago
@ejohnsonff you are very wrong tombraider 6 was one of my favs!!! And the new bio sux!!! Thats my recap
2489hbradley 4 months ago
The only reason TR7 did as will as it did was because the game play was much better than TR6 other than that when I played the game I just went throw the motion the story wasn't interesting, and because there were so many characters and so much dialog that I didn't feel alone or scared of the environment and enemies in the game. As a side note tigers lions dinosaurs ancient mythical being, mythical creature make better enemies than just people with guns.
ejohnsonff 4 months ago
In terms of did they need to change it I seriously doubt it. I mean I can, to some respect understand why you would (get a better perspective of a character from your eyes opposed to someone elses) but for me it actually breaks the character (if that makes sense).
They could have left it and expanded on it, opposed to re-writing the entire thing. I'm not being horrible to either biography's just to point that out, ha.

DinoSlipKnot 4 months ago

Jianlibao 4 months ago
@Jianlibao My pleasure! It was an excellent idea and I am having so much fun reading through everyone's comments so far. Looks like I'll be doing more debates in the future!
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago 2
Changing the biography changed Lara herself almost completely. When she lost her parents and fiancee in a plane crash it gave her a motive to become the cold, daring woman she was. When her mother 'died' through a portal, it lost believability and Lara wasn't so cold and unforgiving, more determined and reliant on finding her parents. I guess they babied her a bit. The Core biography was more interesting, that's why I prefer it :)
BerryFlap 4 months ago
@BerryFlap You know, it's really funny you mention this. In the process of trying to make a more modern, believable game, they took away from its realism by sending Lara's mom tumbling through a portal. Plane crashes have occurred a lot in history. It's believable. But teleportation? Seriously? It was cool and all, but I think Core's bio kicks so much more butt!
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 Very valid point :)
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@BerryFlap Agreed. Babied is a perfect way of describing it.
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
It wasn't necessary to change so much. Everything CD added to it with all the parents story just felt so cliche. Step by step CD are turning Lara from a massive icon of video games to a non-discript generic hero'. Chiping away at her attitude, herritage, style, sexuality etc to create a less and less exciting character.
I think it is such a shame how little respect CD show to keeping continuity with the series roots after so much of what they have came from Core.
Phasetastic 4 months ago 2
@Phasetastic I have to agree 100% with this - what's wrong with the old Lara? Why can't she be witty, fearless, and a daredevil? She doesn't have to be wimpy and emotional for an audience to connect with her. Seems damaging if there's already a fan base in place who loves who the character is already!
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
Time for my two + twenty-thousand cents!
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 ...version and Crystal Dynamics's version. The fact that they DID change the biography and Lara herself as a character makes it purely a reboot. This was one of the only factors about CD's decision to change her biography that I did not like because the concept behind the game was not consistent with their decision to not make a reboot, but rather put their own spin. So to surmise, I don't agree with them changing Lara's biography because Legend-Underworld was NOT supposed to be...
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 ...a reboot.
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 ...had made progress on the direction the franchise should go. AoD had a very compelling story. Lara felt more human. The game was more realistic. AoD proved that Lara wasn't "out of the game". Core finishing with such a fantastic game like AoD should have been, in my opinion, CD's opportunity to take Core's franchise in their aforementioned direction. What did we get instead? Legend. Don't get me wrong, Legend was a fun game, but Crystal changed who she was, without even stating...
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 ...that it was a reboot! At Core's end, Lara was finally moving forward in her character. After so many years of the classic Core games, AoD had set Tomb Raider in a good direction - consistent with Lara's old biography - but CD changed it up and put a dent in the franchise. The dent is labeled: INDIRECTLY-DUBBED REBOOT.
Bring it. ;)
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 Agree, agree, agree! Thanks for posting. AOD was definitely more realistic, modern, and believable. She felt more like a human for sure. Had they continued with the AOD storyline they could have further modernized the game while keeping up with where the series had left off. I think that would have been the smart thing to do. Changing Lara so much/history/storyline, etc was almost an insult to the legend that Lara was.
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 Definitely agree with this comment as well (and LOL @ "NO!") - they could have easily modernized it without changing her bio. Look at the TRAE remake for example - modernized, and true to the original. No reason why they couldn't have created a new adventure for her while staying true to the originals.
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
I think Crystal Dynamics may have taken a wrong turn when they decided to oppose the series roots, but I suppose it worked out in the end! Although after all the dispute about changing her biography in TR7 I can't believe they've decided to do it again for the release of Tomb Raider in 2012! Not to mention another dramatic facelift!
AddRaider 4 months ago
@AddRaider Exactly - which is why I brought up having 3 different Lara's now. Makes me wonder how many are deciding not to continue with the series because they've had enough of the reboots. I know several fans who used to write who "quit" Tomb Raider. Change can be a very good thing but too often and you'll turn people away.
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR Yeah that's right, Crystal Dynamics are really not doing themselves any favours by changing things dramatically. I see so many people on the internet who go crazy for the Core games, but are not so bothered by the recent Crystal Dynamics games. If CD can capture the things we loved about the original games maybe Tomb Raider will regain that immense popularity it once had . Thank you so much for replying, you made my day :)
AddRaider 4 months ago
I may be the differing opinion here, but I don't see the Core/Crystal Dynamics bios as that big a deal. I love Lara and I think it was only a matter of time before conflicts in the bios emerged. Crystal did a new bio and in the terms of video games, it really hasn't changed much. A bio is just words on paper, Lara herself didn't change that much.
I would be more worried about the upcoming change. They are changing Lara in a far bigger way then just words on paper.
evocdriver81 4 months ago
@evocdriver81 Do you feel like she's still the same Lara, though?
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@KatieFlemingTR In many ways I say yes. But I really didn't fully plunge into the TR world until TR7. So perhaps my view is a bit obscured by that. Since I have now gone back versus those that started at TR1.
Also, I love Tomb Raider so much that in the grand scheme of things that I feel that these changes are minor versus canceling the franchise. Overall I think Crystal Dynamics has done a good job keeping the franchise alive while staying true to it. I see the bio as a minor change.
evocdriver81 4 months ago
How can anyone compare TR1 with TR7. TR7 second best Tomb Raider? O_o
As for bios now, i tottaly prefer the CORE's one. I think CD shouldn't changed it.
aragorn2skoulou 4 months ago
But when talking about Lara's bio, I think it sucks that Crystal Dynamics changed it. Why did they even do it? What was wrong
with the old story? It was more interesting. And I miss the witty, strong, smart and mysterious Lara. In the original background story there was also an explanation how she changed after the plane crash and why
she enjoys being alone. And I liked it more that way. So yeah this is what I think. Nice video, Katie!
afonie 4 months ago 2
@afonie Great comments, thanks! I agree :)
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
When talking about the games, imo the biggest mistake that Crystal Dynamics made is that they focused too much on Lara's family drama instead of
tomb raiding and adventures. When I play Core's TR games, I don't really care if Lara's parents are alive or not, because the
story is not about that, it's about having fun on adventures.

I like how she was a keen gymnastic in the newer games, and I like how her dad was alive, but otherwise, I prefer Core.
QueAwkwardNoises 4 months ago
I think it was necessary to create a new timeline for Lara, for the simple fact that she would seriously have been getting on a bit had Crystal's story been taken up after Core's. That said, I am sure most Lara fans prefer the original, although the market clearly required a change. I do not think that the Core/Keeley Hawes Lara besmirched Tomb Raider's legacy, but I do have concerns about an increasingly emotional / vulnerable Lara in Crystal's upcoming 'Tomb Raider'.
imperialflagship 4 months ago
@imperialflagship But don't you think that Angel of Darkness was a step forward for the franchise? According to Katie's video, Angel of Darkness sold nearly twice as many copies as Chronicles. People liked it! And Legend might have shown a more emotional Lara, but AoD accomplished the same feat as well. I disagree that it was necessary to create a new bio for Lara.
Marluxia150 4 months ago
@Marluxia150 On the downside, AOD was rated the worst game :S IMO I connected 100x better with Lara in AOD than I did Legend. In AOD there was a real threat and that was really the first time when she was extremely vulnerable. It also seemed more realistic, and true to the character as well. Thanks for commenting!
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
@imperialflagship What do you think of them keeping the old timeline but adding to it instead? Perhaps this debate will need to be looked at again when TR9 is released to compare yet another new bio!
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
TwilightWarrior95 4 months ago
@TwilightWarrior95 I *had* to include some comments about Winston - I have a serious beef with the "new" one. (Does anyone else think he had some work done?? Looks a little....plastic-surgery-ish)

In regards to Lara's bio, I think less is more.
We don't need to know about Lara's dad, or whatever. We wanna know about the tombs she's in, why she's there, if she'll make it.
I like the way CORE handled it in TR1; when Larson throws the magazines on the table...
So yeah, I think it should be kept as simple as Lara Croft is a British archaeologist & Tomb Raider.
KCwellard 4 months ago 3
@KCwellard That's interesting too, and I agree. I'm more interested in the adventure at hand and how she's going to make it to the end. Not if mommy and daddy are alive, and what they're doing!

@SvobodovaEva Oh, well I didn't have internet back then. So yeah. I guess the statement wasn't that valid...
kayzaac 4 months ago
"Winston #2 is young, skinny and does not follow Lara" That's such a funny statement. :D
SvobodovaEva 4 months ago
Note that most of us, as kids playing never really knew that Lara had a bio to start with. We just loved her style and personality. So the little things in her past, excluding her parents' death and so on, aren't that significant. But it all depends on the story they want to tell.
But bio or no bio, once she's the same kick-ass, British adventurer Lara Croft, I have no qualms. :)
kayzaac 4 months ago 2
@kayzaac This is not true. I adored Lara as a kid and begged my friends who had internet connection to find out more about her. When I first saw her biography I was like 9 years old top.
SvobodovaEva 4 months ago
@kayzaac A lot of fans feel like Crystal's Lara is weaker, and not a badass adventurer like she used to be. What are your thoughts on that?
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
Honestly, I'm rather neutral about the matter of the different biographies, but in my opinion, it wasn't absolutely necessary to change the ENTIRE biography. I understand that Crystal was trying to create a more realistic Lara with more personality, so some elements had to be changed. The story of Legend and Underworld also hinged on the bio so they needed to change it to that extent. The more trivial things like her education and such don't really have to be changed as they aren't so vital.
kayzaac 4 months ago 2
@kayzaac The education changes seemed like a waste to me - they're really not important in the grand scheme of things.
KatieFlemingTR 4 months ago
Well, I prefer Core's biography of Lara, not because it's the original but I like how Lara became Lara Croft. I think Crystal Dynamics took a lot things from the Tomb Raider movies, and I say this because of her father for example. In core games, her father is barely mencioned, and after TR movies came out (and Core leaves) Crystal took various elements from the movies. Her mansion is other example.

HighlandPhotography 4 months ago
@HighlandPhotography yes the gameplay was immersive which was very key to 1's success but i disagree that her personality doesnt matter. Eveyone one loves her kick ass british thing and it definately added to sales. y else would crystal keep her nationality, haircolur, etc through 2 revamps after wiping almost everything else?
JakMG62 4 months ago
@JakMG62 Hi Jak, you're right, of course. What I meant was, if Lara was originally a blonde uneducated British streen urchin taken under Von Croy's wing and raised that way, by TR4 we would have loved her just as much. It was the gameplay that made the game, not the story :)
HighlandPhotography 4 months ago
@HighlandPhotography 100% agree.
