  • Played this every day when I was 13 years old back in 1981. It was a good game.

  • When I have a fever, my dreams have these rough sound FX while I'm faced with math problems. :(

  • Yars Revenge breakfast cereal sadly wasnt as popular...

  • Yeah, this and Megamania were my favorites back in the day. They still rank pretty highly for me.

  • I got this for gamboy when i was a little kid.... I may had been to young, But i could never fucking figure out how to play it.

  • HYPNOTOAD.

  • I used to spend hours playing this game. What happened to me? I can't even play games for half an hour anymore lol

  • This guy needs to know the forcefield is a safety zone. That small line chasing you cant hurt u in the forcefield. I know I used to use it as a kid. There's a higher level where u dont have that safety and the line is really fast... it sucks. :)

  • I was addicted about this game!

  • This game created myself...

  • I remember this game. The Yar's Revenge comic book that came with the game really gave it character and atmosphere. A great story overall.

  • I love the sound effects on Yar's Revenge.

And omg, at last I get what I had to do on this game xD

  • @squirralicious RIght? i never fucking played it because i couldn't figure out what the fuck to do.

  • @kylem1112 I know! whenever I tried to play it i was like, okay... I shoot... then WHAT? O__o

  • Ditto. I had this game for the 2600 back when it was new, and I had no idea how to win.

  • had this game as a kid...never understood it

  • HSHWSH

  • @zetareticuli4 If I remember discovering that Easter egg firsthand, does that make me old? :(

(Also, real Yar scouts wait until the Qotile turns into a Swirl, then shoot him in midair. True story. The extra life is just a bonus; it's really all about being a split-second-precision bad-ass.)

  • @BloodyBay Not old, just incredibly cool. I found that Easter egg first hand too... :^D

  • @zetareticuli4 In that case, I like being incredibly cool. 8^D

I was kind of hoping that the Howard Scott Warshaw Easter egg would make it into the Yars' Revenge: First War game on Atari's website. Alas, it didn't. But the Qotile has a pretty cool "squishy" explosion now, and the Zorlon Cannon's many animations rock.

And my Yar is some weird dragonfly-cockroach-firefly hybrid now. Pretty cool. :)

It's a more honest remake than the game with the armored blonde "Yar", I'll say that much.

  • great game; not as good as Custer's Revenge tho

  • @CheapBeer09 Throwing poker cards at a wall is better than Custer's Revenge. Yars' Revenge eats poker cards AND Custer's Revenge alive, then hits the Qotile's shield for dessert. :-p

  • @pilotboy500 What gave me away??

  • This was such a well weird game. I'm trying to play the new version on XBLA but it's light years different from this, so there doesn't really seem to be any connection. Nothing's beating the original so far :)

  • @pilotboy500 LOL WUT ARE U TALKING ABOUT WHY ISNT THIS GOOD GRAPHICS AND EXCITING SHOOTER THIS LOOKS OLD AND DUMM.

  • i remember every summer that i have to take atari out of the box and played all day...do you still have raiders of the lost ark

  • No, ya gotta blow up the Quotile when it's in midair. That's how you get extra lives, and trigger the Easter Egg. This game really gets insane when you get to the tan level, and the Quotile is aiming for you...ack!!

  • @gamesDAMNED Do you mean those levels where the Swirl diverts course in midair and homes in on you? I just about jumped out of my own skin the first time I saw the Swirl do that. I've seen that damned Swirl turn almost 180 degrees to take a second swing at my Yar. It's not even funny, man. As if that destroyer missile chasing me down at Mach 3 wasn't enough to deal with.... <_<

  • Don't you mean YORI's revenge?

  • Reminds me of an eerie hallucination I had a few years ago, the Game "music" and the part when you beat a level... Weird.

  • Haha, I remember this now. I saw the remake and thought "Didn't I have that for the fucking Atari?"

  • Hey ledweild create a video response for what you just said

  • I know how to beat level one in one second. Figured it out this morning. You have to run up to the red "barrier" while shooting at it and then "eat" it as well when you get there. Make a hole that is just big enough. Then you'll get a "super laser" in the process. Shoot it. immediately. If you do it right, it'll go through that hole and hit "the guy." Didn't actually time it but you kill him pretty much automatically at the start of the level. Hard to explain. Wish I could show you all.

  • This game was addictive!

  • This game was really hard on your hands because you had to use that joystick and you were almost always in motion.

  • I can't get past the first level. :D

  • Haha now this brings me back to 1985-87.

  • Much easier to get points if you just stick to eating and not shooting and setting up to hitting the swirl in mid air.

  • wow this takes me back 28 years

  • what the fuck did i just watch!? can someone please link me to a video that shows me what the hell is going on?!

  • You're not kidding about this game being addictive. A week ago I was playing the same game of Yar's Revenge for 45 minutes. I ended up with a score of over 1.4 million.

  • Ahhh... The fond memories. Thanks for posting this video! Video games seemed so exciting and special back in the day. I feel that we're all so jaded now. I play the newest PC games now with astounding graphics, but I don't get as excited about them as I did when I got a new cartridge for my Atari 2600.

  • This reminds me of Star Castle in the arcade.

  • What is a pirate's favorite classic video game? YARRRRR's Revenge!

  • @BradTheProducer Oh i see what you did thurr hahaha.

  • Memories of the good ol days, just wish i could get in a time machine and stay in the 80's forever haha.

  • Cool. One of the most genuinely entertaining games of the Atari 2600 era... It's just me, or it also was very dark and creepy?

  • Of all the Atari games I grew up with, THIS is the one that I would really like to play again!

  • So the current Atari (Infogrames) is about to bastardize this into a low-budget current generation downloadable game. It's getting an Anime aesthetic even. Not like there was a style to this game anyway, the box art and manual sold you on the idea of what everything was supposed to be in it. In that respect, I miss when games used to make me utilize my imagination.

Now it's all fleshed out for you and you just consume it all in one play-through and move onto the next $60 piece of wallet rape.

  • @robinkom To me as long as the game dosn't suck i'll be happy, the concept is horrible but as long as it is fun... Lets just hope they don't screw that up.

  • the great thing about these old games is that games should be fun. modern games have great graphics and look like mini movies, but if you're overloaded with so much stuff you can't really concentrate on the game itself. Its no fun when someone is sneaking up behind you and you get killed because you can't tell whats going on because of the excessive screen clutter. I loved the old games because they were easy and fun to play. with only a joystick and one fire button.

  • Coming to XBLA, PSN and PC!

  • what. the. fuck am i watching?

  • I played it before and I got up to the level and it has gotten difficult, but other than that it's fun

  • I want it! D:

  • Great 2600. One of my favs. I used to play this all the time. Still do at times. Haha. Deceptively complex with a lot of different factors to adjust your strategy. ^^ A perfect example of good game design.

  • You know, I recently sold my PS3 with half a dozen games. With the money I now have a Gamecube with 30 odd titles, and 10 Atari Games. In terms of gaming, though I can't play someone in South Korea, I could not be happier with the outcome of ditching the PS3

Graphics killed proper gameplay. I love Atari

  • headache, anyone?

  • what you need to do is make the space in the middle, then get the missle to shoot . you have to time it right

  • all the atari games were addictive....ah the good ole days!!!!! i remember playing these games back in the 70;s as a young kid. This was before nintendo,,,before the apple 2c computers...before the internet,,,,an innocent safe time period!!! never to be repeated again :-(

  • ah, so thats how you play it.

  • ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

  • What a classic.

  • I remember this game. I never understood how to play it. From what I see , I still don't get it

  • VERY trippy game. This is back in the days when game designers were all acid-popping stoners in Black Sabbath t-shirts.

And btw -- shoot the cannon at the damn swirl! Why am I the only kid who still remembers that?

  • This looks very surreal in a cool way...

  • what's the magnetic bar in the middle for?

  • MY EARS!

  • Wait for it to turn into a swirl, then shoot the cannon!

  • i remember this game was part of an atari 2600 package in 1985..

  • i made it to level 5 but died im not very good at it buts its steal my fav game of all time :^()

  • Atari Flashback 2, the only way to play Yars' Revenge, and its sequel, Yar's Return.

  • Yes, the only way to play the sequel, but why Yars' Revenge?

You can play that on a real Atari.

  • This was my favorite game on the Atari. I loved the game play.

  • i have this game on GB :P

  • Yar's Revenage is sinister & it's not as simple as it looks as many thought or didn't get. One of the best Atari Games I've ever had along with Dodge Em' & Missile Command.

  • I used to catch thoses flying swirls to get extra Yars. It was fun.

  • Dodge 'Em is a great game. It's also as old as the hills! 1978, I believe.

  • Timeless.

  • Best. Game EVER. Number two is Berserk. And nobody can tell me different. Fuck SOCOM and WOW and Halo... give me Yars' any day of the week. Yar would fuck Masterchief UP.

  • THANK YOU!

  • @orionbrooksclardy

No sir, Fuck you. Halo rules. Atari kicked ass in its time, but you can't argue that you'd sit in front of a TV and play this shit over Halo or Socom. I understand your nostalgic affinity, trust me. The sound effects alone were enough to make you want to kill grandma in her panties... Oh the memories..

  • @orionbrooksclardy I never thought anyone would think like that, you sir are 100% correct in your statement!

  • @orionbrooksclardy Here I am, telling you different.

    Thief 2 > Yar's Revenge

    :P

  • Here's another thing, 70 000 points makes the shield turn blue. 150 000 makes the shield gray. Just now I managed to make the shield gray. One more thing the colorful part in the middle(neutral zone) disappears after a certain point. When the shield was gray, the spiral chased me until it hit me. Man, that was fun. Good luck for those who wanna go farther. And have fun.

  • After the shield turns grey, it turns pink. Pink shield basically means there's a swirl firing at you almost every other second and it's a heat seaking swirl, like there is in grey shield. The only difference is that the frequency of the swirls is much more dramatic than grey shield.

  • So, for all points and purposes, that would be the games "kill screen" where you have no hope to survive, eh?

  • I downloaded a program to run atari games. Yar's Revenge is a favorite of mine. The spiral gets more aggressive when the shield changes color. I can get to when it turns blue. My dad, back in the 80s got to when the shield turned pink. It will turn gray when u reach a certain amount of points. But once the spiral attacks, it will chase u until it hits. And yes of course, I wish that rectangle wouldn't speed up, I always have to fight defensively. It's not easy hitting the spiral when it attacks.

  • One thing I would chagne about the game is not to have that little white line chase you all the time.

  • Awesome classic Atari game. The only thing I'd change is I wish you could destroy the "stealth" missile permanently...if you hit it with the cannon, it always came back right away.

  • This game was pretty good for the day. What is also neat is this game also came with a comic book telling the story behind why and how you play the game.

  • I wish I could play this game, it looks fun. I like the sound effect that plays while the Qotile is charging up to attack as the Swirl. Pyow! Pyow! Pyow! Pyow! VROOOOOSH!

  • Amazing game. It got intense really fast. Brings back a lot of memories to see it here.

  • Classic gaming at it's best.

  • This game rocked back in the day. Is till have this game along with my 2600
