  • I love this! I can't noy believe these awsome 4-8-4s would doublehead in 2007! I hope they doublehead again. :)

  • I think that the 844 looks longer than SP 4449

  • this was the first time I saw #844 since I was a kid she came back in 2010 but too bad 4449 was not with her

  • Look at 1:15! The people stop in their tracks to watch a piece of history fly by! Everybody stops to see a steam engine go by! I love that.

  • @TrainTrackTrav We even used to do that back when I was a boy in

the late 40s and 50s and steam locomotives were everywhere!

There has always been that certain majesty about them that diesels

    will NEVER achieve.

    PURE AMERICAN IRON.

  • I have this one!

  • With the close run-bys, I could just feel the awesome power of steam.

  • I know why they so often put a diesel into the head, but I sure wish they wouldn't! Very nice shots of these loco's.

  • its done in case for any reason they have to damp down. being stuck behind a broken down locomotive on a single track, would mean that eventually the locomotives boiler would run dry. just a safety policy.

  • I saw the 4449 in Owosso, Michigan for TrainFestival 2009 and I'm a huge fan of Mainline Steam in the USA!

  • Actually it's used to provide dynamic braking.

  • IIRC the Diesel also provides power to the passenger cars.

  • And that, as well. The generators in there can barely keep up so you bring in a big ol diesel to run all your high-draw items like A/C and whatnot.

  • WOW man the Pacific always have the best locomotives. I wish the South had kept their locomotives. New Orleans have some though

  • its weird they live pretty far away from each other but they seem to doublehead a lot

  • @wippydobo321 Same railway system, so it's easy to get to each place, the only thing is that the UP doesn't own the 4449, I think a private businessman does.

  • are the diesel engines we use today more powerful than the old steams??

  • NAHHH!

  • its not that they are any more powerful...its just alot more efficient running than a steam locomotive...and staff costs are lower

  • They should do this again.

  • agreed and i whish i was on the train!

  • Yeah its nice when they have both steams and no Diesel in they always seem to team the 844 with a diesel the 844 wasnt even pulling in one of those shots. When they ran the UP3985 from Denver to Wyoming they didnt team it with a diesel it flew solo.

  • Those whistles sound creepy. Especially if it was at night.

  • @DeltaPhi79 You should hear 1218!

  • im so glad they didnt mess up with those two steam locomotive by puting diesel on it!

  • I love the reaction by the people at 1:14. What the hell was that! Priceless!

  • Have the DVD and I love it. However, a little historical correction must be known. This would be the second time 844 and 4449 would doublehead together. The last time was back in 1976.

  • This DVD looks amazing and I love both engines

  • i am really a big fan of 4449!

  • Comment removed

  • The Whistle Vs. The Five Fhime Horn

  • I gotta get this DVD, I'm a fan of both engines.

  • Aw shucks, we were in the San Juans when they passed right below our house. Great videos on youtube!

  • The 844 and 4449 are beasts

  • I bought this 2 hour dvd from Pentrex and really enjoy it.

  • @Mikelandscaper Same here

  • Wonderful shots. Greetings from this side of the pond.

  • I wanted to get 844 and 4449 in HO

  • I wish at lease one bigboy was running. :(

  • what does " working in tandem" mean?

  • It means two engines linked together

  • thank you for the information!

  • That 844 is absolutely awesome!

  • 844 along with 3985 is Owned by UP

  • if 4449 is owned by Portland who owns 844?

  • Union Pacific.

    Dan

  • I was going to chase down and get vids & photo shoots of UP 844 when it was heading east between Nampa, Idaho and Pocatello, Idaho around Memprial Day weekend however at the last second I had to fill in for a nortorious "no show" at work and got screwed over and missed it. Maybe I can shoot some vid of it when it heads my way through northern Nevada some day.

  • why does the 844 need an extra diesel?

  • idk

  • The diesel was added because 844 was renumbered 8444 to make way for a GP30 Diesel numbered 844. The diesel behind her is a SD70ACe #8444.

  • its not that they need the diesel...the old steamers are tired iron and they like to have a diesel in the consist in case the steamer breaks down.

  • Great tape, guys. Can't wait for mine.

  • I just got this video and is a must for any one that saw this historic steam event in person.

  • videographer rocks!

  • make a video of the south simcoe railway

  • I love the unwary public's reaction at 1:13, just about to run the hell outta there when the whistle blows, LOL!

  • Nice catch on the people! Didn't see that the 1st time. Lol!

  • WELL DONE PENTREX!!! This is the first modern steam excursion vid in YEARS! I've been waiting for a new steam release and now my wish has come true!

BTW- It's the 10th anniversary of 844's trip through Tennessee Pass and the Royal Gorge this year!!!

  • When will it be released?

  • AWESOME! Is there actually goingto be a movie on the event?
